The Chef Rules the Last Days
Chapter 182 - 180: Bizarre

Chapter 182: Chapter 180: Bizarre

Before sunset, they had stopped at a small village with a remote address.

Why choose this place?

Because they saw the rising smoke from the chimneys, meaning there were people around, which also meant that the number of zombies in the area was small, making it safe.

Lu Jin’s team had also driven up, but Lu Chen ignored them, instructed everyone to stand by with the walkie-talkie, and then got out of the car with Su Mo.

Having driven all day, Jianxiong’s legs were trembling. He opened the door to stretch his legs, and when he turned around, he noticed that their convoy had completely blocked the village road.

It must be said that the village’s construction was no worse than in the cities; every household was a three-story small western-style house enclosed by concrete walls.

When Lu Chen reached the entrance, he found a family’s door unlocked, so he knocked.

A chaotic sound came from inside, including the noise of dishes and other utensils crashing to the ground.

Su Mo simply called out loudly, "Is anyone there? We’re just passing through, and we’ll leave after resting for one night!"

As soon as she spoke, quite a few heads peeked out from the nearby western-style houses. Someone inside the house cracked open the door, their eyes filled with panic, "We’re fully occupied."

Lu Chen didn’t say much more; he simply took out a bag of rice, "This is the payment for one night."

This rice was a precious item everywhere, but the person inside still shook their head and whispered a warning, "Go away, it’s not livable here."

Seeing his expression, Su Mo was a bit puzzled, but before she could think further, a call came from the neighboring western-style house, "There’s an empty house, you can stay there."

"Snap."

Apparently startled by the neighboring house’s voice, the door was quickly shut tight again.

Lu Chen: "There’s something fishy."

Su Mo agreed, "It’s getting dark fast; we have no choice but to stay here."

Outside the neighboring western house, Lu Jin stood upright. He sniffed and glanced inside, "It smells good."

Although slight, he also picked up on the faint scent of blood, and suddenly, a ferocious, bloodthirsty glare flashed in his dark eyes.

Lu Chen grabbed the rice, leading Su Mo to the next house while Lu Jin and Li Chuan stood at the doorway where a well-dressed woman was present.

Hearing Lu Jin comment on the scent, the woman was momentarily surprised but merely chuckled, "We have a few empty western-style houses at the end of the street. It might be a bit crowded, but there’s enough room for all of you to sleep."

"Thank you," Lu Jin replied, his lips curving into a cool smile, and he motioned with his hand behind him, prompting someone to bring over a sack of flour.

Lu Chen also dropped the rice in front of the woman.

While the woman seemed uninterested in the flour and rice, her eyes lit up when she saw Su Mo, "Sure, sure."

Though it was just a casual glance, Su Mo distinctly felt something was off. The way she looked at her wasn’t the way one would look at another person; it was more like the desirous look someone would give to a plate of meat.

Instinctively, she shivered.

The large convoy took up nearly half the village. Besides the woman, people gradually began to show their faces.

Men, women, old, and young were all there, greeting them friendly.

Jianxiong’s exceptionally robust physique also attracted many stares. He couldn’t help but feel a chill in his feet. After quickly closing the door of the western-style house to block out those gazes, he sighed in relief, "Those eyes, why do I find them so uncomfortable?"

After entering the western house, Su Mo looked around. It was just an ordinary rural house. She wiped the table and chairs, and her fingers remained completely clean, "Someone else has stayed here before us."

"They haven’t gone long," Lu Chen responded, having also noticed how unusually clean the house was.

The mansion’s door was opened, and more soldiers continuously entered. Lu Chen arranged the superpower users and elite soldiers together, ensuring each building had someone on guard at night.

Their building also housed about a dozen people.

As night fell, someone knocked on the door of everyone’s mansion.

Jianxiong went to open it and found that the village’s natives had brought water, claiming it was a token of gratitude for the bag of rice and flour.

After Jianxiong accepted the water and saw the people off, he set the bucket aside.

Lu Chen glanced over and instructed, "Tell everyone to take Clear Miasma Pills tonight and not to touch the water."

The elite soldiers had their wits about them, knowing there was likely an issue here, so they only consumed the dry food they brought with them.

After all the mansions were served, in a house lit by candlelight that was filled with people, those were the very ones who had just delivered the water.

"Did you deliver them all?" The woman sitting at the front, who had received the rice and flour, asked.

"Yes, but I saw that their vigilance was high; they won’t touch it," someone responded.

"Exactly, when I delivered it, their glares were terrifying, they even had their guns out, a bigger show of force than what we’ve encountered before."

The woman narrowed her eyes, "Our meat is almost gone, let’s stick with the old method tonight and take out one of the mansions."

"Which one?"

Picturing Su Mo’s delicate face, the woman licked her lips, "That girl’s meat must be tender, we’ll bring it back tonight for a good feast,"

In the dimly lit room, eerie green glints shimmered in the eyes of the crowd.

Su Mo and the soldiers and superpower users ate the same, just some compressed biscuits and water, not ideal for making exceptions when there were many around.

The rooms above were allocated to them. Su Mo nestled on a couch while Jianxiong spread out a sleeping bag on the floor.

In the first half of the night, she and Lu Chen kept watch, the man sitting beside her as they both watched the flickering candlelight on the table, quietly cuddling together.

Until the candle went out and the mansion plunged into darkness, Jianxiong started to snore.

It was already midnight when Su Mo yawned. Some slight noises came from outside, and she moved her ears and looked towards Lu Chen.

A faint scent of sandalwood suddenly wafted in.

Su Mo had just sniffed it when Lu Chen covered her nose and forced a pill into her mouth, one brought from the Jiang Residence to combat miasma.

Lu Chen gave her a look, and Su Mo nodded, closing her eyes and leaning on his shoulder, pretending to faint.

Inside the mansion, Jianxiong’s snoring tapered off. He glanced over at the ’fainted’ pair on the sofa, closed his eyes, and pretended to faint as well.

Seemingly assured everyone had fainted, the sound of unlocking reverberated again outside, Su Mo squinted her eyes, estimating around seven or eight people.

The person holding the incense placed it at the stairwell, and plumes of smoke drifted upwards.

Su Mo was lifted off Lu Chen by someone, and the man discreetly hooked her finger before being carried away as well.

She hung over someone’s shoulder as she and Lu Chen were carried out.

Jianxiong lay on the ground. His hefty size required four people to lift, so the intruders had to leave him be temporarily.

As Su Mo and Lu Chen were taken away.

The elites upstairs, who had already taken the antidote, began to mobilize. Jianxiong stood up, directed by a high-level Spiritual Superpower User, and the group stealthily followed them out of the darkness.
