Chapter 176: Chapter 173: Investigation
Her cries were louder with each wail, and Jian Chunhua silently etched the dialogue into her heart from inside a tent.
As soon as Su Mo returned to the villa, she hurriedly brewed a pot of Biluochun Tea. She had barely taken a sip when Lu Chen, seeing her disheveled state as he entered, suddenly turned cold.
She quickly signaled Li Qian with her eyes to carry Zhao Changsheng back first.
"You’re back," Su Mo’s visible external injuries were healing before the eyes, leaving only a faint mark. She lifted her smiling face and walked towards Lu Chen.
The man gloomily stared at the faint scars exposed on her skin, "Who did this?"
Encircling his waist, Su Mo nuzzled against him, a glint of dark light flashing in her eyes: "Some superpower users who harbored improper thoughts towards Zhao Changsheng."
Lu Chen’s fingers traced over those faint scars, his brows furrowing tighter by the second.
Sensing his mood, she hugged him, her face pressed against his chest as she softly said, "Lu Chen, Zhao Changsheng is a good person, she just isn’t clear about what she wants yet. Give her some more time."
The man didn’t speak; without any other choice, Su Mo had to twist his neck, making him bend down to kiss her.
Inhaling the uniquely sweet scent of the girl, Lu Chen finally let out a low sigh of compromise, "Alright."
But he would not let off anyone who had hurt her.
Su Mo immediately beamed with joy. Taking his hand, the two of them returned to their room.
When they woke up the next day, Zhao Changsheng, whose medication had worn off, appeared before everyone as if the events of the past few days had disappeared like smoke in thin air.
Everyone was naturally pleased with her transformation.
After breakfast, they prepared to head to the training area.
Zhao Changsheng followed out as well, her eyes clear as she stood in front of Su Mo and earnestly apologized.
Smiling, Su Mo gestured, "Aww, your apology is accepted. We’re going to train, are you coming?"
She extended the invitation to her, and Zhao Changsheng’s fox-like eyes brimmed with a layer of mist, "I will come."
Zhao Changsheng, having been sulky, was finally behaving normally, and Su Mo was naturally very happy.
The incident involving Lu Jin’s rescue the other night wasn’t mentioned by either of them.
Apart from Su Mo, everyone spent the entire day in the training area, enduring the brutal training given by Lu Chen.
After greeting Lu Chen, she left early that day—her blade was still at the blacksmith’s shop, time to pick up the new Tang Blade.
After the girl had gone, Lu Chen rubbed his wrist and called over Hu Ding, "Check where Su Mo went yesterday."
Hu Ding was surprised, "What happened?"
"Looking for some vermin," Lu Chen lowered his gaze, picked up a gun from the table, and after the gunshot rang out, hit the bullseye squarely.
Hu Ding nodded, "I’ll bring you the information tonight. A few factions, easy stuff."
The blacksmith seemed to know Su Mo was coming to retrieve something; the shop door was left ajar today, and she stooped to enter.
Inside were constant sounds of hammering.
"I’ve come for the blade," Su Mo called out to the middle-aged man working at the table.
"Almost ready," the man worked vigorously, and after the final blow shaped the blade, he plunged the Tang Blade into the water and a hissing sound ensued; when taken out after, the newly tempered Tang Blade, with its blackened blade crisp with chill, and the cold gleam of its edge, sent a shiver down the spine in the refraction of water droplets.
At just a glance, Su Mo knew this was indeed a fine blade.
The man took a rag and wiped the blade gently, and then tossed it to Su Mo.
She caught it deftly, her fingertips flicking the blade, producing a low ringing sound. Weighing it, Su Mo found it much heavier than the original material, but with its sharp edge, a mere swing emitted an air-cleaving sound that satisfied her greatly. She then stowed the blade away in her Space.
She handed over her Identity Card to the middle-aged man, "Here’s your payment."
The man took it, only deducting what was due to him, then promptly returned it to Su Mo, "If you need anything else, you can come to me."
Smiling, she nodded in agreement and left the shop.
Shortly after she left, the middle-aged man was about to tidy up and close for the day when a bald man with a scar on his head barged into the shop.
The shop door was pulled down.
The mood of the scarred bald man, who had already lost half of his men, was extremely foul, and his expression was sinister, "Have you decided to sell my item?"
The middle-aged man panicked and desperately retreated, "I was planning to sell yours, but it has been snatched by someone else!"
The bald man grabbed his collar and threw him to the ground, "Who touched my stuff from Sheng Yi?"
The man scrabbled around and brought up the device interface that had just swiped Su Mo’s Identity Card, "Her, her, her!"
Sheng Yi took it, his gaze dark and foreboding, glanced at the man, dropped the device, and left, "Clean this up."
"Are you insane? Dare to kill in the Second Ring..."
A splash of fresh blood stained the wall, the man’s eyes bulging as he clutched at his throat, his ruptured windpipe soon left him voiceless, and his body was collected by a Space Superpower User following Sheng Yi into a space.
As night fell, Lu Chen obtained the information Hu Ding had given him at the Jiang Residence, just as he wished.
"However, what’s strange is this," Hu Ding brought up a report and spread it before him, "Last night, in the building where the superpower users live, there seems to have been a murder case. But the body has been cleaned up."
Since they were all superpower users, they could only turn a blind eye.
Lu Chen looked at the paper, his eyes landing on the photo of the menacing bald man, and considered, "How many died?"
Hu Ding, "Not a few."
Lu Chen picked up the file, the air around him turning colder, and he left.
Today, Su Niang was in charge of cooking, and as soon as dinner was ready, Lu Chen came in. Su Mo was setting the table and called him to eat.
Lu Chen suppressed his emotions and joined everyone for dinner. Afterwards, without a word, he grabbed Su Mo and headed upstairs.
Jianxiong muttered quietly behind him, "What’s up with him? He seems to be in a bad mood."
Zhao Changsheng glanced at the two disappearing at the stairway, a worry settling in his heart, guessing the reason behind it all.
In the pitch-black room, as soon as Su Mo entered, Lu Chen threw her onto the bed.
She sunk into the soft mattress, her head spinning, "Are you looking for some post-dinner exercise?"
The meal she had just eaten was almost thrown up.
Lu Chen tossed a file onto the bed and leaned over her, "Did he try to kill you?"
Turning her head away, Su Mo saw the photograph and immediately shook her head, "I don’t know. The master didn’t show his face at the time; I didn’t see him."
"Who saved you?" Lu Chen buried his head in her neck, his voice both cold and muffled.
He was well aware of Su Mo’s strength. Under those circumstances, without someone’s help, she certainly wouldn’t have survived.
Su Mo pursed her lips and sighed inwardly at the man’s efficiency. She knew why he was behaving so abnormally but still answered truthfully, "Lu Jin."
Not wanting to lie to him, Su Mo held his head gently, "There were too many people at the time, so he just stepped in to lend a hand..."
Lu Chen’s hand suddenly gripped the bedsheet. Su Mo immediately realized something was off with him and hurriedly propped up his face, "Lu Chen... I just didn’t want you to worry."
The man wrapped his arms around her waist and tightened his grip, his chilling lips uttering a few words, "Were you planning to die before letting me know?"
