Chapter 159: Chapter 156: Going to the Banquet
Seeing Jiang Hai’s hesitation, Lu Chen’s voice was cold as ice, tinged with a hint of mockery, "I will protect the child, you only have one chance."
The study was quiet for a while before Jiang Hai slammed the desk and decided, "I can stop the injections, but the person must be under my watchful eye."
He wasn’t without feelings for Jiang Yulian, and when it came to the security of his woman and child, he had to monitor constantly.
Lu Chen nodded without hesitation, but before he left, he added one last sentence, "This is the last thing I’ll do for you."
Before Jiang Hai could speak, the door was forcefully closed.
When Lu Chen passed by, laughter from Jiang Yulian and Su Mo filled the room, his expression softened as he opened the door and walked in.
Su Mo was originally telling a joke, but on seeing him come in, she arose to greet him, "Where have you been?"
She pulled him to sit down at the edge of the bed, and Lu Chen shook his head, speaking softly to Jiang Yulian, "Stop the injections from tomorrow."
"Ah?" Jiang Yulian exclaimed in surprise, "Your uncle..."
"Agreed," Lu Chen interrupted, "From now on, Su Mo will help you with your meals."
Su Mo knew that he must have bartered something with Jiang Hai to make someone so devoted to his child give up the medicine, she suppressed her underlying doubts and smiled at Jiang Yulian:
"Aunt, rest assured, I guarantee you’ll have a healthy baby boy."
Since Jiang Hai had agreed, Jiang Yulian didn’t say more, merely smiling in response; she never actually believed that Su Mo would truly deliver on her word.
When the two left the Jiang Residence, they hadn’t even reached their own villa’s gate when they were squarely intercepted by Chang Sheng and his men.
"Admiral Lu, good afternoon, I am here by Commander Lu’s orders to kindly request your presence at dinner tonight," said Chang Sheng.
Lu Chen’s expression was stern as he abruptly replied, "I won’t go."
Chang Sheng stood before him, persistent, "Please, Admiral Lu, don’t put me in a difficult position; your mother misses you greatly."
Lu Chen’s hand tensed momentarily, his eyes on Chang Sheng carried a murderous intent, which made the latter involuntary step back two paces, his head lowered, a flicker of fear in his eyes.
"Understood," the man pulled Su Mo along without turning back.
"We will send someone to pick you up tonight, and please be sure to bring along the lady with you," Chang Sheng finished speaking, sensed it was better not to linger, and immediately led his men to withdraw.
Su Mo looked up at Lu Chen, worry and confusion in her eyes.
"Wait for me at the villa tonight," the man said.
Su Mo shook her head, grabbing his hand to stop him, "They invited me too, how can we not go?"
"No matter what happens, I want to be by your side," Su Mo urged, staring at him with her clear, large eyes. After a moment, the man pinched her face in concession, "Okay."
Since the two were not dining at the villa that night, the heavy task of cooking fell upon Su Niang; just before leaving, Su Mo again encountered many concerned looks.
It was Chang Sheng who came to pick them up. The Lu Family’s villa was also in the Inner Ring, yet it was quite far from the Jiang Residence.
The atmosphere in the car was very silent as they passed through numerous nearly identical villas, the car finally stopped in front of a mansion.
What first caught the eye was a vast lawn, with the villa behind resembling a castle. If Su Mo remembered correctly, she had seen this building in a magazine; it was built by some super-rich tycoon and eventually became a landmark of City B.
Su Mo couldn’t help but inwardly sigh, no matter the time, it’s always those with power who live better.
Chang Sheng personally got out to open the door for them. When she got out, Lu Chen helped her re-tie her tousled hair before taking her hand and entering the mansion.
Inside, the place was brilliantly illuminated, with flowers of unique designs on both sides of the road, the likes of which Su Mo had never seen before.
Apparently noting her curiosity, Chang Sheng explained proactively, "All the mutant green plants here have been transplanted from outside."
"Oh," Su Mo retracted her gaze, feeling she already understood the extravagance of the person in question; claiming territory as one’s own was just like this.
After Chang Sheng opened the grand doors for them, he stepped back.
The tall entrance hall that met their eyes was topped with a crystal chandelier that bathed the space in opulent light.
The two of them walked alone through successive arches and corridors, and the living room came into view, filled with the light laughter of women.
To Lu Chen, it was the most grating sound. He walked in with a cold face, holding Su Mo’s hand.
The massive marble dining table inside was set with exquisitely prepared Western dinner, presided over by a distinguished middle-aged man, flanked by two women of lingering charm.
Su Mo raised her eyebrows, immediately thinking of the phrase "a man with many wives and concubines."
Li Chuan was also present; he waved to them in greeting.
The arrival of Lu Chen suddenly silenced the previously gentle laughter. Su Mo then saw a woman who looked very much like Lu Chen stand up from her seat, her voice somewhat choked:
"Lu Chen, you... you’re here."
"Brother Lu!" Lu Yuan excitedly got up and walked over to greet him. She had dressed very carefully for the evening, her face rosy and lightly made up, a white dress highlighting her lovely figure.
Lu Chen sat down emotionlessly at the last seat, dragging Su Mo with him, which annoyed the two women.
Receiving a warning look from her elder brother, Lu Yuan reluctantly sat down in her place.
Lu Youwei waved for additional utensils to be added, holding the hand of the woman next to him and patting it as he spoke in a deep voice to Lu Chen, "You must have had a rough journey here."
A dish of mutant steak was served next; Su Mo sniffed it and found it quite tender. Just as she was about to fork into it herself, the steak in front of her was taken away, replaced with one that Lu Chen had cut and handed to her.
Su Mo smiled at him, took a bite, and contentedly squinted her eyes, appreciating the expertly seasoned sauce—it was delicious.
Seeing her enjoy the food, Lu Chen finally asked in a light voice, "What did you want to see me for?"
Unbothered by his tone, Lu Youwei put down his knife and fork and wiped his mouth, "Your mom misses you. She wants you to come visit."
"Cough!" Su Mo choked, covering her neck, her face turning red. Lu Chen handed her a glass of water and patted her back, saying resignedly, "Eat slowly."
Fang Ya, noticing the emotional fluctuation in Lu Chen, shifted her gaze to Su Mo and quickly noticed the similar bracelets on their wrists. Having heard early on that her son had a woman, she hurriedly put on a smile and said, "Right, right, eat slowly, we still have fish coming."
Fang Lian, envious, sneered at the ingratiating Fang Ya, "I say, sister, not everyone appreciates that kind of attention."
She was, after all, the wife Lu Youwei had rightfully brought back, but over the years, his attention had always been on Fang Ya, whom he had snatched from the previous head of the Lu Family.
She was practically green with envy.
Fang Ya’s eyes darkened, and then she forced a smile, "I’ll go check if the fish is ready."
"Oh! And my soup!" Lu Yuan suddenly remembered something and hurried off to the kitchen with Fang Ya.
Fang Lian strutted proudly like a hen that had won a fight, feathers ruffled in triumph.
"Mom," Lu Jin put down his fork and swept a cool glance at Fang Lian, "Have you had enough?"
