The Chef Rules the Last Days -
Chapter 151 - 148: She Will Be My Wife
Chapter 151: Chapter 148: She Will Be My Wife
"She will be my wife," Lu Chen said, locking his phoenix eyes with Jiang Hai’s with utmost seriousness. He spoke more solemnly than at any other time.
"You!.." Jiang Hai was so blocked that he couldn’t utter a single word.
"I am taking her with me." Lu Chen took Su Mo’s hand directly and left the study without a backward glance.
"Damned brat!" Jiang Hai pounded the door shut in anger, causing a cluster of wood chips to fall from above.
Su Mo was so overwhelmed by Lu Chen’s words that she couldn’t snap back to reality for quite some time, walking out in a daze. Lu Chen leaned down, looking into her unfocused eyes: "Are you scared?"
Su Mo’s gaze focused on the man’s divinely sculpted handsome face. She placed both hands on his face, her voice trembling slightly, "Say what you just said again."
Lu Chen couldn’t help but chuckle, it seemed his worries had been unnecessary. He leaned close to Su Mo, staring into her bright, clear eyes, and slowly repeated, "You are the wife I, Lu Chen, am committed to for this lifetime."
Su Mo’s eyes became sore and swollen with emotion; his words had a powerful impact on her. She hooked her arms around his neck and planted a fierce kiss on his sensuous thin lips: "I am falling in love with you more and more."
"Cough, cough," from a room not far away came another fit of coughs.
Lu Chen straightened up, wrapping his arm around her shoulder: "She wants to meet you."
Su Mo nodded: "Let’s go see her, and I need to properly thank her as well."
In some sense, Jiang Yulian was a key figure in bringing her and Lu Chen together, and could be considered her lifesaver.
She was led into the room by Lu Chen, and as she saw the person inside, her heart gave a start of shock. This was nothing like the spirited woman she had met the first time; the woman on the bed, skinny throughout her body except for her hugely swollen belly, was actually Jiang Yulian.
"Aunt Jiang," Su Mo released Lu Chen’s hand to sit by the bed. She glanced at the bulging belly under the quilt, feeling instantly shocked: "How can this..."
When she first met her, that belly was already the size of seven or eight months, and now the end of the world had already passed by a quarter, yet the child was still in her belly.
As if knowing what she was thinking, Jiang Yulian reached out and took her hand, managing a weak smile on her face:
"It’s okay. There were many dangers on the way from A City, and I got injured. It was tough, but I managed to survive. To save the baby, the doctors gave me a newly developed medicine, waiting until the baby is stronger, then it can be born."
Su Mo was stunned. She turned her head to glance at Lu Chen’s complex eyes and then back: "This... is so damaging to the body."
This was sheer recklessness! What are they putting her through! Su Mo raged inwardly.
Jiang Yulian simply shook her head nonchalantly: "I’m already a superpower user and can withstand the side effects of the medicine. This is the only child of me and Jiang Hai, his life’s ambition. I can’t let anything happen to the baby."
As she spoke, she even showed Su Mo the water ball she condensed in the palm of her hand.
For a moment, Su Mo didn’t know what to say. She pursed her lips: "Was it Vice Commander Jiang who found the medicine?"
"Yes," Jiang Yulian nodded. "It’s all thanks to him."
Su Mo found the whole situation utterly unimaginable and felt all the more that Jiang Hai’s actions were selfish and obsessive.
Jiang Yulian could tell from her expression that she understood. She glanced at Lu Chen, and the man took the initiative to step outside and close the door for them.
Only the two of them remained in the room.
"Let’s not talk about that anymore. I hope I didn’t scare you earlier. I saw Lu Chen’s face changed—he’s never had so many expressions before," she patted Su Mo’s hand, her face full of kindness.
Su Mo shook her head, a sincere smile spreading across her face: "No, Aunt Jiang, I still have to thank you for sending Lu Chen to rescue me."
Jiang Yulian’s smile was tinged with bitterness. She spoke hoarsely: "Actually, I regretted it afterward. Without waiting for your return, I thought..."
Her tears fell as soon as she spoke. Jiang Hai often argued with her over sending Lu Chen to conduct the rescue, which turned out to be a disaster. She truly felt guilty and believed her poor health was largely due to her own fault.
Su Mo shook her head repeatedly and took a tissue from the box on the bedside table to wipe Jiang Yulian’s face: "I understand. Whether or not you had sent someone to rescue me, you did nothing wrong."
She wasn’t a relative of Jiang Yulian, and for a person to go to such lengths, she truly felt grateful. Without Lu Chen, she wouldn’t have made it through the early days of the apocalypse.
"Honestly, I’m really thankful to you," Su Mo said earnestly, feeling a genuine fondness for this aunt.
"All right, all right, let’s not talk about this topic anymore. It’s good that you two are alive," Jiang Yulian sniffed and smiled warmly at her before asking, "Are you and Lu Chen together now?"
Su Mo nodded frankly, and her eyes sparkled at the thought of Lu Chen: "I love him very much."
As someone who had been through it all, Jiang Yulian could easily tell. She was sincerely happy for her and sighed: "When Jiang Hai and I took him away from the Lu Family, did you know? From then on, he had only one expression throughout his childhood and adolescence."
She put on a stern face for Su Mo, imitating Lu Chen’s expressionless look.
Su Mo chuckled and nodded in agreement: "That’s right, his face is always frozen, like a poker card."
"But I just saw him smile," Jiang Yulian continued, looking at Su Mo with nostalgia, "When that child smiles, thinking about his loved one, it’s so gentle."
Su Mo was startled, and then her nose grew sour. She silently clenched Jiang Yulian’s frail hand, feeling the bones so delicate as though she could break them with a slight squeeze.
Jiang Yulian tried to hold back her tears, coughed a few times, and Su Mo quickly passed her the water beside her to take a sip. Jiang Yulian shook her head, refusing it, and whispered as she held onto her hand:
"It hasn’t been easy for Lu Chen to survive until now. I just hope he can live safely in this chaotic world. If Jiang Hai asks him to do anything, I hope you can persuade him."
Although puzzled in her heart, Su Mo quickly agreed: "I understand, shall I call the doctor for you?"
Her complexion looked too pale.
"No need, they will know if there’s anything wrong with the baby," Jiang Yulian said with a smile, shaking her head and pointing at her belly. Only then did Su Mo notice the wires of some medical equipment hidden under the blanket.
The baby’s vitals seemed to be monitored closely. Su Mo’s eyes darkened as she grew more repulsed by the middle-aged man, Jiang Hai.
"How about you rest for now? Lu Chen and I will come see you again tomorrow?" She saw the weariness in Jiang Yulian’s eyes and did not want to bother her any longer.
Jiang Yulian did not insist and nodded her head. Su Mo wanted to help her lie down to sleep, only to be told that her belly was too big, making it risky for her spine.
When she left the room, her entire facial expression was somber.
What she could now confirm was this: Lu Chen indeed was the son of the Lu Family, but the reasons for growing up at the Jiang Residence were far from simple.
