The Chef Rules the Last Days
Chapter 129 - 126: Mutant Bird

Chapter 129: Chapter 126: Mutant Bird

The gunfire had never ceased, which made one dread to imagine what a gruesome sight it must be inside the city.

With military vehicles at the front clearing the way, the ordinary cars behind hadn’t suffered much damage, but the many zombie corpses scattered around inevitably made people’s hearts start to contemplate retreat.

Having already descended from the highway, to turn back would undoubtedly be even riskier; they found themselves in a dilemma and had no choice but to follow doggedly.

It was around noon, the sun hanging high in the sky, and the convoy hadn’t stopped for a moment. The zombies surrounding them became more and more numerous as they neared Yan City.

Su Mo looked out the window, only to see a bird suddenly flapping against the wire mesh outside the car window. Its pitch-black beak reached through the mesh and pecked at the window, making a thudding noise.

"What is this...?" She leaned forward from the back seat, only to see the bird’s pupils shining white, pecking incessantly at the window, each strike stronger than the last.

Zhao Changsheng, sitting beside the car window, took a closer look: "Has this bird mutated?"

"It seems so," Su Mo said, frowning as she sat back down.

The convoy began to slow down after a while.

A voice came through Rong Bai’s walkie-talkie.

"Report! There’s a large formation of unidentified flying creatures ahead."

"What kind of things?"

"They appear to be birds."

"Birds?" A stern expression on Rong Bai’s resolute face, he immediately issued an order, "Have everyone roll up the windows and tell all the Gold Element and Fire Ability Users to stand by inside the vehicles."

"Yes."

Li Qian’s walkie-talkie also relayed the orders from Rong Bai. His spiritual power spread out, and soon, a mass of dense specks appeared in his domain.

Without him saying anything, the people in the vehicle could see. The sky above them, where the sun had been hanging high, was now covered completely, casting them into a crowd of shadows.

"Damn..." Jianxiong looked up at the sky through the front windshield.

Above their heads... was a dense flock of birds, and they seemed to be closing in.

The convoy only paused for a moment before moving again.

Rong Bai wanted to see if they could get out from under this flock of birds.

However, as they got closer to Yan City, the birds seemed increasingly agitated and restless.

At first, a few birds followed the procession in the sky, spiraling for a while before diving down. But before they could even reach the vehicles, they were shot down by the soldiers.

Later, the mutated birds circled above their heads, forming a vortex, packed tightly together.

"Prepare to defend against the first aerial assault."

Rong Bai’s voice transmitted through the walkie-talkie once more.

"Our target is too large," Su Mo said, taking out the Tang Blade and readying herself.

With such a long tail of vehicles behind them, they were an irresistible feast for the mutated birds in the sky.

The flock above grew increasingly restless, their piercing cries a discomfort to the eardrums and hard to bear.

They spiraled lower and lower until they all dived down, a sight so immense it filled everyone’s vision.

Su Mo’s grip on the blade tightened, as the first wave of the bird onslaught rapidly approached.

Countless sparrows with sharp beaks plunged down; their military vehicles’ roofs and windows were bombarded with the sound of pecking.

The fluttering wings almost completely blocked out the light outside, and the vehicles rocked left and right with the flock’s movement, indicating the immense force of the birds.

The reinforced wire meshes on the windows could still hold up, but the windshield in front was showing signs of cracking.

Lu Chen prepared to open the trunk to get out, "I’m going to guard the front."

Su Mo didn’t think such a huge flock of birds could be avoided just by hiding in the car, so she immediately said, "Together."

Except for Su Niang and Ling Ye, everyone got out of the car.

Li Qian asked Lu Chen for a gun, and the moment the car door was opened, seven or eight birds flapped their pitch-black wings and attacked them.

After Su Mo and Lu Chen got out from the back, they quickly closed the trunk, cleaning up the birds perched on the car window.

To avoid being scratched, she had to continuously activate her superpower, weaving through the flock of birds—that was the only way she could nimbly avoid attacks.

Lu Chen rushed to the car window and killed the birds on it, his hand covering the glass and leaving a layer of Cold Ice, temporarily blocking the birds from breaking in.

Jianxiong’s skin was very tough; although he was clumsy, with Li Qian’s support, the two of them didn’t struggle much to kill the birds.

Zhao Changsheng’s Thunder Whip was limited in the convoy. Having cleared the birds pecking at their tents from the car rooftop, she climbed up. With a much broader view from the top, each swing of her whip smashed down a group of charred birds.

Su Mo even spared a moment to glance at the cars behind them; those had become completely chaotic, with only a very small number of superpower users willing to come out and protect their vehicles from damage.

Those ordinary civilians hiding in the cars could only watch as the glass beside them began to crack bit by bit, and then, under dozens of horrified gazes, the glass shattered completely, and scores of mutant birds surged in, each peck ripping away flesh and blood.

"No! Don’t!"

"Help! Somebody, help!"

With screams rising one after another, Su Mo didn’t know if they regretted their decisions at that moment. She turned her head and hacked away the mutant bird pecking toward her.

The military’s superpower users, under Rong Bai’s command, paired up and struck out.

Li Chuan’s Fire Power played a tremendous role at that moment. His almond eyes turned a dazzling red, his hands emitted flames, and any mutant bird that neared his car got set on fire.

He didn’t kill them, but let them fly high into the sky with flames engulfing their wings, passing the fire onto other mutant birds.

The air was filled with the stench of charred corpses.

His approach led other Fire Ability Users around him to follow suit. This was the fastest way to clear them out.

Su Mo stood guard at the rear of their car while Lu Chen continually blocked the mutant birds at the front, making their cleanup relatively effortless.

"Help! Please, save me!"

A crisp female voice suddenly rang out in the midst of the military.

Su Mo turned her head and immediately frowned.

The young girl in a white dress...

Li Qian stood by the car, occasionally controlling his gun to explode the birds’ bodies. He saw the girl too, his eyes behind the glasses filled with contempt, though his face didn’t show it.

She would occasionally scatter seeds towards the flock of birds, from which a few lethargic green vines sprouted, barely managing to restrain the birds.

Her face was attractive, eliciting the soldiers around her to lend a hand.

Dressed like that in the apocalypse, Su Mo didn’t know what to think. With the sound of wings flapping by her ears, she was about to turn her head to strike when she was penetrated by an Ice Blade.

Lu Chen was at the front, always mindful of her movements. "Stay focused," he said.

Su Mo smiled apologetically, redirected her gaze, and concentrated on killing the mutant birds in front of her.

The vast flock of birds ultimately fell in a blaze of red, reminiscent of the meteor that plunged down that day, a spectacular and dazzling sight.

Su Mo took a breath and met up with Lu Chen.

"What were you looking at just now?" The man brushed the fallen ash off her head, his tone not too pleasant.

"Ah... lower your head a bit," Su Mo beckoned to him, and Lu Chen complied, bending down slightly.
