Chapter 80: A Great Chef will not settle for less quality Ingredients!
A few hours earlier, before the Code 3 tide, inside the research institute, the professor, mainly in charge of the agricultural crisis, ordered his assistants to gather the case files about the Hallow Village that were available in their database.
Although the Outer District had no access to electricity, important facilities like the food storage and research institute in the inner ring were allocated ample resources like water, food, electricity, and so on.
Once these assistants were able to locate the files, they printed them on used paper before bringing them back to the professor.
The professor then went to restudy the papers in case he missed something. This case was a century old and remained unsolvable ’til the current time, a baffling mystery to the experts in the field.

[Hallow Village: Nightmare Dungeon Difficulty]
[8:45 until Wave 3’s arrival]
After the second wave was cleared, a door leading outside appeared, and the injured Long Haoran didn’t hesitate to go out after bandaging his left arm.
The debuff of [injury] beside his status ailments didn’t vanish and reduced his health by two every ten minutes.
His current health points were [358/500] after he was unable to avoid an attack.
Rummaging the house once more gave him a few usable items: a rusting knife, a garden hose, a hammer, and a match box, but there was no medicine.
Long Haoran placed them inside his inventory, which only had cooking ingredients and kitchen utensils. He had regrets about stacking medicine.
He had some ingredients in his inventory, but there was no time to cook; otherwise, he would be able to use his class and those skills.
If only he had enough time.
Killing monsters in this dungeon didn’t give him experience points.
Long Haoran armed himself with his trusty frying pan, which was more durable than anything he came across.
Click-
The screeching sound of the door frame dragging on the wooden floor was creepy as he opened the door. Through the gap he made, he had a little view of the outside.
His eyes were immediately attracted by the tiny fissures on the land and the wooden house built opposite. It seems abandoned based on the withered leaves scattered, the dirty doorstep, and the broken wooden fences.
Based on his observation, no monsters would appear in the span of the short interval given by the system. Long Haoran widened the gap in the door and stuck his head out.
Once he did so, he had a full view of his surroundings.
Rows of wooden houses with similar designs entered his sight. The most apparent from his observation were two things: he couldn’t find a shadow of any patch of grass, flowers, or trees, and in every corner, whether it was the walls of the house, the dirt road, or the fences, there were traces of dried blood and claw marks everywhere.
Long Haoran fished out the map tucked inside his waist and unfolded it.
A detailed, hand-drawn map with label markings was registered in his vision. Most of the markings were house numbers, while some were village facilities like a farm, pigsty, poultry coop, village center, stores, village clinic, and village head’s house.
Long Haoran’s eyes straightened when they landed on the village head’s house.
Long Haoran approached the door to look for the house number. After spending twenty seconds, he was finally able to find it.
It was [House No. 27], and the one across him was [House No. 13].
To get to the village head’s house near the village center, he needs to pass by ten houses and some stores.
He dared not waste time looting each house and went to the richest household.
He ran fast while his eyes darted from side to side, observing the terrain of the village and taking note of what escape routes he could use.
The houses and building were one-story, making it very inconvenient as a temporary stronghold.
Once he was near his destination, he noticed the building with two floors. He ran towards it.
When the time struck [6:42], Long Haoran managed to arrive, slightly panting. He craned his neck.
[Village Head’s Residence], the prompt floating on the roof stated.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead.
This is good. The building, aside from the windows and doors, is not made of wood but of sturdier materials.
Long Haoran strode toward it and opened the door.
What greeted him was a dusty living room. On his left were two lounge chairs with brown leather cushions arranged opposite each other, a small table in between, and a shelf filled with some porcelain jars. On the foot of the shelf was a barrel of plants that was surprisingly alive.
He walked towards it.
[Chumpet Root Crop Plant (Grade: First Class)—Poor Quality]
[Ready for Harvest]
Chumpet? A root crop? What a weird name...
Wasn’t this supposed to be planted below the ground and not inside the house?
His trail of thoughts halted when another screen popped.
[Detecting a Qualified Ingredient]
[Special Skill: Daily Ingredient Upgrade Triggered]
[Does the player wish to use one of the daily upgrade chances on the target, Chumpet Root Crop? ]
A thin green halo enveloped the two-foot-long plant.
This was the first time he had seen this message. Long Haoran closed the door first before he clicked on the ’yes’ option.
[Gourmet Supplier’s Special Skill Activated: ’A great chef will not settle for less quality Ingredients!’ activated]
Long Haoran bobbed his head and gave the system a thumbs up, finding the skill name very true.
The two-foot-long plant, as if shoved with a ton of fertilizer and growth hormones, grew into a lush plant. Its leaves became bigger, and the stem became thicker.
The grade of the plant changed from ’First’ to ’Second’ and it became a medium-quality ingredient.
[Does the player wish to harvest? ]
Long Haoran remembered his other skill. Granting buff or healing properties to the dish.
If he could attain a high-quality main ingredient, the chances of getting good buffs would increase.
But first, he needed to inspect the house.
Long Haoran gazed one more time at the plant before running all over the place and climbing the second floor.
