Chapter 63: Operation: Becoming a Mole
When Little Mantou reached Siri’s side, he saw several items scattered beside the elf’s feet.
"Why?..." Siri mumbled while sobbing.
Little Mantou guessed what had happened and felt pity for the elf. To comfort the latter, he sat by his side and joined him in lamenting their bad luck. "Don’t worry, Sir Elf, we’re the same. I’m unlucky too."
Siri immediately stopped sobbing and asked curiously, "Why? What loot did you get?"
"Cooking oil, rice, noodles, some blueprints and weapons, but no cooked food," Mantou responded, deflated.
"..." Siri glanced at the items on the floor that he got from opening chests: [Moldy Bread], [Torn Old Pair of Socks], [Broken Toothbrush], before sobbing louder.
This fox must be avenging for what happened this morning!
----
Both Mr. Fang and Gong Panli stared blankly at the warm meals on their laps, given by Li Chunhua.
"Is this chicken?" Mr. Fang stammered, muttering the question to himself as he tremblingly lifted the food box to examine the meat closely.
The smoky and rich scent of the braised chicken instantly drilled into his nostrils, making him gulp a mouthful of saliva.
It really is!
And it seems to have just been cooked recently, judging from how fresh it looks and smells!
Even though he was not a foodie, he was dying to get a bite!
Heaven knows since when he last tasted meat. It was probably six months ago when the management strictly controlled and only distributed the meat products inside the Inner Ring.
The outer district could only serve canned meat on their tables, which had ceased since two months when the news of the wholesale supermarket, the malls, and those food factories became undead-infested.
Thus, the base decided to be sustainable and heavily focus on farming, but that didn’t go quite well as only one kind of crop was able to survive.
So where did the lad get this from? Could it be that she stole it in the inner ring?
But Gong Panli had said the live stocks contracted disease, and so the research institute forbidden the consumption of them and even set a huge fine for those who attempted to sell them for fear the disease would be passed on and spread in the base which is troublesome due to the lack of medical facilities and medicines.
Gong Panli was also thinking of the same thing.
His attention was divided between the meal, the supplies like the sacks of rice, noodles, and canned goods, and Li Chunhua and his little dog, who were eating heartily in front of him without caring for their images.
"Miss Li, where exactly did you get all of this?" There was total confusion and anxiousness painted on his face, which had not lessened ever since he arrived at the gym.
No one would remain calm in such a situation.
Mr. Fang was also going to ask that. His eyes contained suspiciousness as they stared at the lady, whose cheeks were bulging like a squirrel.
"Cough..." Li Chunhua choked on the fried chicken she was chewing after realizing that, because she was so fixated on solving the problem that she had forgotten, it would be suspicious if the supplies suddenly materialized out of nowhere.
She placed the chicken drumstick on the food box before unsealing a bottle of water and drinking it.
She couldn’t come up with a decent answer, especially for the cooked food, so she sent some eye signals to the elf for help.
Brother Siri was more intelligent than she is, and she didn’t have any hopes for the little fox, whose attention was solely on devouring the stewed chicken thighs.
Li Chunhua could hear his groans and moans as the little fox sank his teeth into the meal.
Siri stopped eating because he understood the assignment given to him. He parted his lips and put on the expression that he had her back. Don’t worry; I got this, master.
Li Chunhua was relieved and continued sipping the water to wash down her throat. She believed that Brother Siri would be able to create a plausible excuse. Definitely a plausible excuse...
"My Mas...granddaughter is a fairy. She is able to conjure things," Siri said with all seriousness.
"Pfft."
There was a sound of someone spitting and water splashing.
"Master!" Little Mantou barked angrily after Li Chunhua spat the water on his face, and some landed on his food.
"I’m sorry." Li Chunhua wiped the water staining her mouth and regretted asking Siri for aid.
It was her mistake.
She forgot the elf came from a magical realm, and his level of imagination was too much to digest for the people of the current civilization.
She snuck a glance at Gong Panli and Mr. Fang’s faces and rubbed her face tiredly. The two were looking at her, asking for an explanation, probably treating Brother Siri’s earlier words as farts.
Specifically, Mr. Fang displayed a knowing and understanding look.
Now he knows why she had the knack for bootlicking!
Siri raised his brows, wondering if he had said something wrong.
While, Little Mantou ignored the four people’s exchange and just dragged another food box.
----
After burning the majority of her brain cells, Li Chunhua was able to shift the two’s attention elsewhere.
"Is this rice?!"
Both Mr. Fang and Gong Panli couldn’t believe what they were seeing right now. On their hand was a bag of rice, which they opened to confirm there were not just stones in there.
The smell that only freshly-harvested rice exuded drifted under their noses, filling their eyes with moisture.
They carefully inspected the other food supplies, like noodles, hams, and other necessities, and what they’re most astonished by are the hot and cold weapons and boxes of ammunition.
They looked around and at the entrance, making sure it was closed before Mr. Fang checked if the components of the weapons were not fake.
While Gong Panli searched for the expiration date of the supplies,.
Gong Panli’s eyes widened after they found out that the food items were manufactured just yesterday, according to the date stated on the label.
Mr. Fang was also equally astonished because the weapons were nicely preserved and didn’t have any problems at all. No need for repairs and were ready for use.
Their minds replayed when the grandmother said that Li Chunhua was a fairy.
Maybe she really is, but as to why she didn’t reveal the real source, Gong Panli and Mr. Fang didn’t insist on asking questions anymore. The most important matter was how to get this to the Outer District without getting noticed.
To arrive at the Outer District from Mr. Fang, they would need to pass several inspections stationed around the vicinity, which the upper management placed after the raid, probably thinking that the Grannies had more supplies hidden.
Regarding that problem, Li Chunhua had already thought of a plan.
"If we can’t go up, then we can go down!"
"Lass, are you crazy? It’s probably weeks before we’ll be able to reach the other side with your method."
The other three also were skeptical and agreed with the statement.
---
Ten minutes later, inside the hole, four pairs of eye stared blankly at the long tunnel ahead and the figure still digging its way through like a mole.
Mr. Fang couldn’t help but marvel, "Dang, I forgot this lass is a freak..."
