Chapter 40: Grandma Siri and Little Doggy Mantou

"Why are you in such a dangerous place, Grandma?"

The man darted his vigilant pair of brown orbs darted on both sides of the road before he crossed the lane cautiously to reach the hunched back elder woman’s side that was currently carrying something wrapped in dried vines.

It was a shock to him how an old woman whose age seemed to be greater than 80 years was roaming the undead-infested streets of the abandoned city proper so fearlessly.

Another odd thing is that her floral white dress, neatly combed white hair held in a bun, and white fluffy slippers didn’t have any stains, dust, or tears. She is also very clean and appeared healthier than those elderly people he encountered in the Metropolitan Base.

But despite the strangeness surrounding the elder woman, it was still one of his responsibilities to rescue her and bring her back to the base.

The man, seeing that the surroundings were clear, ran towards Siri’s side and began checking the elderly woman’s limbs and neck for any bitten wounds, but he didn’t detect any. He immediately held the elder woman’s right wrist before repeating his question in a polite tone: "Grandma, why are you here? This is the danger zone."

Grandma?

A cold wind blew past, and it flapped the edges of Siri’s long, golden, luscious hair. His face, sculpted close to perfection without a single wrinkle, had confusion written all over.

In an uncertain, stammering voice, he asked the young man, "You’re calling me grandma?"

Mantou was also looking at the young man. Is he blind? How can Sir Elf be a grandmother? He is even younger looking than this man.

To Siri and Mantou, his voice was clear and soothing, but to the concerned young man, it was weak and bated, as if she were speaking through her nose.

Grandma must be hungry and thirsty. Too bad, he didn’t bring any food or water when he separated from the team.

The young man didn’t dally any longer, thinking Grandma was exhausted. He gently pulled her away. "Grandma, let’s go. I’ll bring you to a safe place. My team is right around the next street."

Oh no...

The dangling Little Mantou lit up a candle for the young man.

High Pantheon Elves are known for their love of beauty. Anyone who calls them old, even in an indirect or roundabout way, can be transformed into a vicious creature of your nightmares, literally scarier than those obnoxious monsters or the meteor that nearly crushes them.

There was a quote spread among the races: ’It’s better to steal a dragon’s precious treasure than call an elf ugly. Otherwise, you’ll just be making your deathbed.’

Siri yanked his hand out of the young man’s grasp and said, "I’m not a grandmother. I’m a perfectly healthy young male."

The young man looked at him dazedly. His eyes traveled on the numerous creases on her forehead, the crow’s feet wrinkled on the corner of her eyes, her trembling, saggy cheeks, and her fake teeth. "Alright, alright, Grandma. You’re as healthy as a horse. It’s me who’s inconsiderate."

Siri was initially relieved when he thought the young man had the intention of correcting himself, but when he heard the Grandma word again, a vein popped in his head.

You could laugh at his spell-casting skill, but when it comes to his beauty...He he.

"Young man, I’m asking you for the last time. What did you call me?"

The young man replied. "Grandma."

Dark clouds loomed above Siri’s head.

Little Mantou craned his neck and let out muffled cries of warning towards the young man: "Run!"

However, the young man didn’t sense the danger coming, nor did he understand Little Mantou’s barks and even have the time to point out, "Grandma, why did you tie up a dog with a vine?"

Thus, Little Mantou’s shouts turned from ’Run’ to ’Beat him up! ’

ಠ益ಠ

How dare you call me a dog?

I’m the dignified Prince of the Celestial Fox Race!

Don’t you see my snowy and fluffy fur?

Beat him up! Beat him up!

A minute later, from another street, three people wearing the same dark blue camouflage army combat uniform, like the young man who approached Siri, heard a familiar voice shouting for help in a screeching tone coming from another street. One of them, the female captain, with her brown shoulder-length hair assembled into a ponytail, quickly responded to the calls of her subordinate.

With a gun in her hand, she signaled the two of her team members to keep an eye on the surroundings while she ran towards the source.

She spent two minutes before she arrived at the scene, and once she saw the situation, she dropped her hand that was raising the gun.

"What are you doing, Fin? We’re on an important mission, and you’re here playing around!"

The young man noticed his team captain; he desperately called her in the midst of his suffocating laughter, "Ha ha ha, Team Captain, help me! Ha ha ha, this crazy grandma and her dog just started tickling me all of a sudden. Get them off me. Ha ha ha. Please, Team Captain, I can’t breathe! Ha ha ha. Let me live!"

The young man tried to get them off, but these two were so heavy and strong. He couldn’t muster resistance.

This grandma must be an ability user, which explains her odd strength. No wonder she was so confident in roaming the streets alone!

With this strength, even the most able-bodied recruits will need to bow down!

"Ha ha ha, spare me, grandma!" Fin’s face was rosy red from all the laughs erupting from his throat.

"Don’t call me Grandma!"

"Don’t call me a dog!"

Both Siri and Little Mantou, who was freed by the Elf for the just cause, joined hands in punishing the young man by tickling him all over. His boots were pulled, his bare feet were exposed, and the two kept poking his sensitive spots on his waist and soles.

"Ha ha ha."

The team captain rolled her eyes at her subordinate. "Get up on your own." An elderly person won’t suddenly attack without a proper reason. This guy must have done something. She clicked her tongue.

The young man noticed his team captain’s stare and was dumfounded. Why are you looking at me like that? I did nothing wrong!

"Ha ha ha."

"Grandma, I’m sorry if my subordinate caused you trouble. It’s unsafe here. How about coming with us to the base along with your dog?"

Both Siri and Little Mantou looked up when they heard the calls, and they saw a young female smiling and talking to them. The corners of their lips twitched. However, before they could say anything, two more men showed up.

"Team Captain, we need to evacuate. Fin, help Grandma and her dog to the car."

If there’s only one or two calling them, it’s not strange, but if all do the same, there’s something wrong. Siri and Mantou looked at each other before sprinting towards anything that could be used as a mirror. The edges of his floral dress flapped along.

"Grandma! Wait!"

The four people were astonished because the elderly woman was actually running at an abnormal speed, even faster than them, and stopped in front of a destroyed car parked in the middle of the street.

Fin, who finally had a chance to breathe, crawled towards his pair of shoes. "I survived," he mumbled after wiping the tears from his eyes.

"That is one cool grandmother," one of them commented before catching up.

Little Mantou tiptoed to look at his reflection and was shocked to see an unfamiliar image. His hair was not fluffy white but gray, and his cute looks were gone. He really looked like a dog now, just like those humans said.

What in the fox king’s name is going on?

Just after this question sprouted in his mind, a screen appeared in front of him.

[Your appearance is beyond the development of this world. To prevent inconvenience when executing your master’s mission, the system assigned a random image.]

So that’s the reason why he was referred to as a dog!

Wait, if that is the case, Sir Elf is...

He slowly looked up, and he saw the elf staring blankly into the glasses of the deformed metal box. The elf’s eyes were without a hint of luster and hopeless, as if he had lost everything.

(A/N: Little Mantou was referring to the glass window of the car.)

Little Mantou jumped to the elf’s right shoulder, and the image reflected on the glass entered his vision.

(⊙Д⊙)

Bloody fox! Who is this wrinkled granny? It’s even older looking than my oldest surviving ancestor!

Suddenly, his dissatisfaction with his current image totally vanished because, compared to this granny look, the image generated for him by the system was still tolerable. But this...

It’s entirely another level. Not to offend anyone, but it was a thousand miles apart from the elf’s original look, and it’s even...female.

The system is so ruthless!
