“Alright.”
Xia Siyu said to Xia Youbiao again, “Dad, we’ll be heading out first.”
Xia Youbiao immediately withdrew his hand from Xia Sicai’s side. “You’re leaving?”
Xia Sicai’s expression darkened a little at the same moment.
Xia Siyu nodded, “I might have to go back tonight to record a New Year’s greeting, so I need to head back and deal with some work first.”
Xia Youbiao quickly responded, “We should leave too.”
“Dad!” Xia Sicai immediately called out to him, “Can you stay with me this year? I really miss you and Mom.”
This was Xia Sicai’s usual tactic. Back when she and her mom returned to China, she often played the victim in front of Xia Youbiao—pretending to be sick at one moment, complaining of nightmares at another—just like ancient concubines vying for favor, all to keep their dad from visiting them.
Bo Yi understood his wife’s intentions and hurried to persuade him to stay. “Yes, Dad, you could have New Year’s Eve dinner here before leaving. If you’re tired, you can rest for a bit; we have plenty of guest rooms.”
Xia Siyu, standing off to the side, didn’t respond. After all, from past to present, the Xia Family and her were never truly a family. Even now that she was at the Bo Family’s home, this fate hadn’t changed.
But she was no longer that pitiful child waiting for her father to come home on New Year’s Eve. She had grown up, and now she had a husband. The world that she and Bo Yan shared didn’t need to accommodate more people.
“Alright, we’re off. You all have a good talk together. Grandpa, Bo Yan and I are leaving now—Happy New Year.”
Xia Siyu had grown used to it and felt no sadness about it. She held Bo Yan’s hand as they got into the car. As the car pulled out of the garage and drove away, perhaps due to the angle, she distinctly saw a hint of longing in Xia Youbiao’s eyes.
But beside him were his ex-wife, his son and daughters, along with his son-in-law’s family. Yes, it looked like a perfect, happy family reunion.
That was nice.
The car soon turned a corner and drove out of the Bo Family’s gate. Xia Siyu didn’t cast even a single glance backward.
Bo Yan tilted his head to look at his slightly pensive wife. He reached out and gently placed his hand over the back of hers. Xia Siyu looked up, and Bo Yan smiled warmly. His palm radiated heat as their fingers intertwined, locking their hands tightly together.
She neither envied nor resented anyone, because she had her husband now. She squeezed his hand firmly and rested her head on his shoulder. “Honey, what should we eat tonight? It is New Year’s Eve after all, so we can’t just make do with something random.”
Bo Yan rubbed his cheek against the top of her head. “Then tell me, what do you want to eat?”
“What do I want to eat?” Xia Siyu paused for a moment. As a self-proclaimed foodie, countless dishes instantly flashed through her mind. But as her thoughts settled, one thing remained. “I want to eat dumplings.”
Dumplings, also known as “jiaozi.” At the year’s end and the start of a new one, eating dumplings symbolizes bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new.
But for Xia Siyu, her deep attachment to dumplings came from the fact that every year during Chinese New Year, her mother would make dumplings for her by hand—whether they were living abroad or had returned home.
However, her mother always made extra, setting aside a portion for her father. Yet in all those years, not once had he returned to eat them—not even once.
She still remembered the first time she ate dumplings as a child. She was won over by their soft and juicy texture. She thought, truly, no food in the world could compare to dumplings.
But as she grew older, she found she no longer liked dumplings. She stopped eating them during New Year’s, and she wouldn’t order them on regular days either.
Yet today, maybe because her emotions had been stirred, or maybe because she was with Bo Yan, she truly wanted dumplings—a longing that was strong and unshakable.
