Chapter 36: The Interrogation (1)

"I’ve been away for a whole two days to avoid the family drama" Isabella commented as she dropped her cup of warm tea on the table with a click sound. "But then, I fail to realize that the drama in this house never ends."

Sitting quietly in the living room with Juliana, Isabella couldn’t stop herself from bringing up a conversation, most especially after everything that has happened after her return. The Duke hasn’t been around lately, and yet so much drama has happened in just one day.

Isabella looks at her mother-in-law, still taken aback by the news of Lord Cassian being married. She hadn’t been able to digest that news properly, and then the next thing she witnesses is a weird looking man who claims to have bought his wife first from her family.

"Who exactly is that girl? What family is she from?" Isabella was insistent on satisfying her curiosity.

Juliana’s gaze hardened when Isabella refused to stop irritating her with her neverending questions. Noticing the warning glares sent her way, Isabella immediately zipped her lips and quietly sipped her cup of tea while carrying the saucer. It was best to not offend her mother-in-law before she gets angrily devoured by her.

Lady Isabella was one of the beautiful daughters from the Earl family. The third honorable peerage before theirs.

Her marriage was decently arranged with Juliana’s first son, Abbot. It was a peaceful alliance that went really well and the marriage celebration was an extremely grand one too. Unfortunately, people seem to remember only the worst since Cassian decided to display his mischievous talent by getting the priest drunk at the church venue.

Infact, Juliana was starting to think Cassian did them a huge favor back then, because if she had stopped the wedding there and then after the incident, she wouldn’t have to put up with Isabella’s chattering nature. Worst of all, Abbot always visited the palace with his father, leaving her alone to tolerate his wife for him.

Adeline, who had been standing at one of the corners in the living room, quietly came forward to clear the cups away.

Isabella’s mind was on a silent rampage. Her mother-in-law is never in the mood to gist with her when it comes to this kind of thing, and most times she had to trick her servants into telling her the full gist. She wished her sister had followed her here, then she’d at least have someone to talk to.

Already feeling bored, Isabella’s blue eyes instantly brightened after spotting the handsome Lord Cassian coming down from the stairs. Whenever she saw the captivating young Lord Cassian, she silently prayed to go back in time, just so she could change her alliance with Abbot and marry him instead.

"Cassian!" She immediately called his name to gain his attention. The excitement in her voice even startled Juliana who was busy thinking of ways to make her son Abbot become the next Duke.

Cassian, who was heading for the main door, unhurriedly stopped in his tracks to look at the woman who had called his name like she was seeing her crush after a longtime. His interest instantly diminished like specks of dust after seeing it was no one else but his annoying sister-in-law.

She was basically the only person who kept trying to talk to him from Juliana’s side.

"Ahh~Bella." He didn’t bother to hide his disinterest since the lady already knew he didn’t like her, but it wasn’t like the excited Isabella would care. She’s been like this after they met for the first time during her wedding with Abbot, and he assumed she was a lady with cerebral problems.

"Cassian!" Isabella immediately hurried to stand in front of the young lad. "How have you been? I’m very upset with you at the moment. I’ve been away for a whole two days, and you never bothered to ask about the whereabouts of your sister-in-law." Her facial expression showed how hurt she was by it, but Cassian managed a simple, yet comely smile.

"Do you want Abbot to cut off my head by asking about his wife? Besides, the witches and wizards harboring in this mansion won’t let me be if I dare to ask about you." His eyes cynically shifted to the already irritated Juliana, and he winked at her, adding to her fury.

"Witches and wizards?" Isabella appeared lost, and half frightened by Cassian’s retort. "You mean to say there are witches and wizards living in the Duke’s mansion?"

"You didn’t know?" Cassian decided to play along by acting surprised.

"Isabelle, come here right now!" Came the orders from Juliana. Her angry tone had startled Isabella who immediately turned to look at her. She gulped nervously, feeling stupid to have forgotten Cassian and her mother-in-law are never on good terms with one another.

"What are you still doing there??!"

"C_coming." Isabella immediately left Cassian’s side and went to sit on one of the couches that was adjacent to Juliana’s seat. Once again, Cassian had decided to infuriate the angry woman with his sly words.

Finally getting Isabella off his back, Cassian said nothing else and stepped out of the mansion. Inna came down from her fancy carriage with the aid of her Coachman. Her eyes landed on Cassian who got onto a carriage that looked too simple for a man of his caliber. He was heading out as usual which was a normal thing to everyone, but Inna knew deep in her heart that this brother of hers was hiding something.

"Where is he off to?" She quietly asked herself as she watched his carriage ride out of the mansion through the gate.

With the sky darkening and signaling the evening hours, Orson waited outside the building of a prison cell for Cassian to arrive. It was a very quiet evening and the only thing keeping him company were the sounds of crickets hiding in the bushes.

Massaging the back of his neck and pacing around slowly, he finally stopped after sighting Cassian’s carriage coming up ahead. If he had his way he would burst one of Cassian’s carriage wheels as his revenge for making him stand out here, only to be feasted on by the mosquitoes flying around.

"He really likes to make me wait on purpose." Muttered Orson when the Carriage stopped in front of him, and him being unable to do a thing about it.

Cassian unhurriedly got down from his carriage without the help of Amade. He was wearing his mask, but had removed it after seeing no one else except Orson was waiting on him. No one would easily suspect his presence since he didn’t use his personal carriage, and he intends on keeping it that way.

"You should hold onto the mask since you’ll be going in to see the new Lady’s auntie." Uttered Amade who could tell the young lad was silently debating on whether it’d be necessary to take his mask with him or not.

"Amadeus is right." Orson said in agreement, knowing it would be risky if Cas shows up revealing his face to those criminals in the prison cell. Questions about his reasons for coming to the cell without proper permission may arise, and even though he might not need permission since he was bestowed that power, people will surely talk and twist the story.

Cassian looked at his friend for a few seconds before coming to a decision.

"Do you remember her cell?" Questioned Cassian as he walked past Orson and slipped his black mask back on. It was a completely plain charcoal-black mask that hid his facial features, save for his Amber-brown eyes that glinted with serious intent.

"Hmn." Orson nodded with a hum, opening the metal door and walking in after Cassian. "She’s refusing to say a word since she’s still grieving over the loss of her husband." He quietly informed Cassian as they walked past many cells that were filled with prisoners. "I don’t know what else to do to make her talk, she’s already covered with some bruises and I planned on giving her some time to recover before asking again."

"There’s no time, time doesn’t wait for one to fully recover before striking again." Remarked Cassian as he fixed his white gloves. "She has to talk, Orson. Whatever took place in that house is no joke. All the workers, including her husband, lost their lives to a clean murderer, and I’m curious to know who could be so skilled in the arts of killing someone without leaving a single trace of evidence."

Another reason why Cassian was so determined on finding out about the killer, involves the feeling that whoever is responsible might come for Madeline as well.

Getting to Auriela’s cell, Orson spoke with the prison guard, explaining they were here due to the orders they got from the authorities, and after a few seconds of exchanging words, one of the prison guards finally let them in.

"Wait here." Cassian said to Orson who blinked in confusion. "What, why?"

"You tried your best, now it’s my turn to interrogate this case, personally." He explained before going into the cell’s confinement and closing the door.
