Chapter 87: A Single Hit
Jason stood in the corner, lost in his thoughts as the atmosphere shifted.
A man walked into the room, his body brimming with mana. He had dark eyes and black hair combed meticulously, while he was old, his features told the tale of a middle-aged man.
Jason turned to the man’s direction.
[Name: Smith Payster
Age: 150
Physical – Mid Stage 5
Mental – Late Stage 6
Mana – Late Stage 6
Skills:]
’This guy is strong, but I guess that is obvious since Him chose this guy to represent him in this meeting.’ Jason thought. ’Yet I don’t think he made an appearance in the novel.’
’He probably died on the battlefield.’
Him; the name by which the strongest human was known by, their were rumors and speculations that even he didn’t know his own name.
Him didn’t come from a clan of any sort, instead he was born from an unwanted pregnancy between normal citizens of a normal city two centuries ago. As a result, he wasn’t given a name and discarded by his parents.
He was found by a caretaker in the orphanage and taken in. When it was time for the compulsory awakening ceremony, he awakened rank 0 potential.
"I’m sorry to say, but my master won’t be able to attend." Smith Payster addressed the elders.
A lengthy discussion began between the elders of the various clans and Payster, with Jason trying to listen in on their discussion.
’They’re talking about me.’ Jason realized.
Even though they didn’t turn in his direction, he noticed that the main point of discussion was him. Payster continuously asked the Hachiman clan elder multiple questions, while the old man answered them.
’I never knew that my life story would be discussed so openly.’ He thought dryly as he listened to Elder Elric talk about his life.
Jason was surprised to hear that the clan actually believed his lie about mana blessing him with the Null eyes, it was a stupid lie on his part, but then he couldn’t think of anything better.
It went over to his results in the clan.
"You there!"A voice called out.
Jason ignored it, clearly not interested.
He heard footsteps, the sound of someone approaching him, then, the person put a hand on his shoulder from behind.
"You shouldn’t be eavesdropping on a discussion between elders." The voice cautioned him.
Jason turned his head to face the person.
He grinned.
"Omikami Kairo of the Amaterasu clan, nice meeting you." Jason greeted, hoping for a handshake so he could make contact with Kairo.
’If he accepts this, I’ll be able to copy flash steps.’
The velcro shoes that he wore seemed to have a limiter, it no longer doubled his speed anymore.
And to him, flash steps and spirit steps would be a nice combination.
"No, thank you." He slapped Jason’s hand away, putting his own hands in his pocket. "Don’t think I want to be your friend just because I gave you advice, I just don’t want to hear your screams when one of the elders decides to cripple you."
Jason’s grin didn’t falter. "We don’t even know each other, why should you care about me?"
"Also, don’t judge people by their appearances." He added.
"Why shouldn’t I?" Kairo spat.
"Because you might just get your ass whooped." Jason turned to walk away.
’If I’m correct, with his arrogant personality, he won’t let me go easily.’
"And who’s a cripple to tell me that?" Kairo replied with a smirk.
Jason turned back, staring at Kairo in the eyes.
To Kairo, Jason’s blue eyes were mystifying.
"A cripple who at least has his clan’s bloodline technique, and he’s not even the clan heir. Compared to the clan heir of the Omikami clan’s heir who doesn’t even have his clan’s bloodline technique, I believe said cripple is a gem and the heir is a pig consuming resources without effect." Jason answered.
’Now, freeze.’
Jason planned to replicate the same thing he did on August, but without trapping someone’s consciousness in the void. He believed that just by staring in his eyes, Kairo would be put in the same trance-like state as August Hachiman.
The clan head of the Hachiman clan was in a state of disbelief after getting trapped in the void, by a magic cripple no less. The same effect would happen on Kairo.
Kairo was in a state of disbelief for a second, but it was only a second.
"You stupid punk, I’ll literally cripple you!" Kairo roared.
He cocked his fists, ready to deliver a punch that he believed would give Jason a permanent makeover.
’It didn’t work out.’ Jason thought, his grin disappearing. ’Maybe I should have trapped him in the void and then made contact with him.’
’The incident with Titania is happening again.’ Jason sighed, considering if he should break the finger again.
"Stop." A calm voice commanded from behind him, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Or you might just get beat up."
Kairo froze as he looked over his shoulder, stopping his punch mid-way.
"What?" Kairo muttered, his voice barely a whisper. "Weren’t you at the other side of the room just now?"
Zane was behind him.
"I was, but I’m here now." Zane answered his question.
Kairo dropped his hand, sparing one last good look at Jason before clenching his fists and walking away.
"Why did you help me?" Jason asked once Kairo had left, but all eyes were on them.
"He’s too annoying, and I’ve been wanting to hit him. If you beat him up now, he might forfeit when its his turn to fight me." Zane admitted.
Jason nodded, before a thought popped up in his head.
"By the way, how do you manage to move so fast? I didn’t think you had a skill for that."
"I use lightning magic to increase my speed, its a tricky process and I haven’t mastered it yet."
Jason nodded again, though he did feel disappointed.
’I guess I’ll have to wait a bit.’
Zane left after their brief discussion, Jason watched as the elders and Smith discussed among themselves. The topic of their discussion had changed from him to the joint-clan tournament, they decided who would face who.
But even then, his mind still wandered to the sudden fall of the Izanagi clan and the Hades clan coming as their replacement.
After ten minutes of debating amongst themselves, the tournament finally started, after a short speech by Smith Payster.
Jason was matched against one of Kairo’s admirers.
[Name: Omikami Amaya
Age: 15
Physical – Late Stage 1
Mental – Mid Stage 1
Mana – Early Stage 2
Skills:]
’The sole reason I don’t check stats often is because I’m often disappointed when I check the stats of someone weak.’ Jason thought as he examined her stats. ’Maybe I shouldn’t check the stats of my next opponent.’
He watched as she brought out a spear from a space ring on one of her fingers.
The spear wasn’t made from wood.
’I shouldn’t use weapons in this fight, if I do, this girl might just die.’ Jason decided, her fists curling up into a ball as he entered his stance.
It wasn’t a stance ideal for the current situation, his back hunched and his feet positioned so he could get ready to sprint.
"What is he doing?" The Raijin clan elder questioned, her eyes catching Jason’s display
"He’s getting ready for the fight."
’Its been a long time since I’ve punched without using delayed fist.’
Delayed fist was currently his only and favorite skill for fist fights. To Jason, it was just satisfying to see someone explode.
"Begin!"
The fight had begun, but no one was moving. The tension between them was palpable as they waited for the other to move.
"Do you think that you’ll be able to counter if I attack first?" Amaya taunted.
Hearing her threat, Jason had no choice but to respond.
Jason rushed towards her, moving at a speed invisible to the naked eye. Even to the clan heirs from the various clans, it seemed like he had blitzed through air, they could only see afterimages.
Before the girl could react to his speed, he punched her in the stomach.
The air in her lungs were expelled in an explosive gap, the girl’s eyes widened in shock, her expression morphing into pain in an instant.
The speed he had built up while running was transferred to her via work, the force behind the punch he had thrown sent her body flying backwards, her body propelled backwards like a rag doll.
The crimson-red liquid spewed out from her mouth as the fist made contact with her stomach, her blood staining the floor.
Her body eventually landed before hitting the walls of the hall, her body rolling on the ground before finally coming to a stop.
In that brief moment, Jason felt a pang of regret wash over him.
’I should have just more power.’ Jason regretted holding back most of his strength in that punch. ’She should have hit the wall.’
