Chapter 69: The One Who Was Left Behind (4)
...
Hereon couldn’t believe his eyes, the shock of the sight that was before him caused made his body to involuntary shudder. His breath caught in his throat, and he trembled as he watched the person in front of him.
He had killed Jason, he watched as the mana bullet went through his heart, he watched him crumple onto the ground, dead.
Yet this same person stood in the distance, standing as if time had stopped. The very same person Hereon thought was dead.
Jason – someone he had killed out of spite and an order from the clan – was alive.
The last time he had seen Jason was in the cavern, a gaping hole in his chest and his body lying in a pool of blood, his own blood.
He was lifeless at that time. Hereon watched him fall onto the ground.
Somehow he was still alive.
And stronger than he was before.
’This can’t be real.’ Hereon’s mind raced. ’I watched him-’
His thoughts were interrupted by Zane’s voice.
The boy had crawled over to him, something that the boss monster wouldn’t have allowed if it was still alive.
"Hereon..."
Hereon snapped out of his daze, but his mind was still racing.
"Do you have a healing potion?" Zane asked in a whispered tone.
Hereon felt his ring, he did have one. It was useless to him, what stopped him from moving wasn’t pain, instead i was fatigue, he had over-exerted his body with the spider and now the boss.
"Yes, but-"
Zane cut him off. "Give it to me, I have a feeling something bad is going to happen."
Hereon didn’t argue, he too felt that something was going to happen.
Jason was going to come after him, to get revenge for killing him. He knew it.
He was afraid, if Zane found out that he was the one that put Jason in the state he was...
"Don’t you want to survive?! Give it to me!" Zane urged.
Hereon still didn’t.
The weight of the decision pressed down on him, and while part of him wanted to give Zane the healing potion, the other part of him wanted to act, to protect his secrets, to shield his every secret from being exposed.
He couldn’t act, fatigue held him down.
Zane used that to his advantage.
He pried the ring out of Hereon’s finger, the boy tried to resist but Zane’s grip was strong. Stronger than his own.
Zane wore the ring on his finger, and sent his mana into it, a healing potion appeared in his grasp.
Hereon didn’t move, he watched silently as Zane downed the contents.
Zane’s battered body stiffened, the wounds and bruises across his limbs knitting together at an astonishing pace.
Even through all that Jason stood in place, staring into the distance as though something miraculous was happening and he was watching it keenly.
All of Zane’s wounds healed.
’Its over.’ Hereon thought.
Jason would tell Zane about what happened in the cavern, after all Jason saw him when he shot.
Zane tossed Hereon’s ring onto the ground.
But even then Jason was still staring into the distance.
"Jason." Zane called out.
Zane was sent crashing backwards, he didn’t tumble as he moved, instead he was upright.
A second after he was sent backwards he brought his hands forward to defend himself.
’When did I get on the water.’ Zane thought, he had seen when Jason turned to face him.
Seeing that he instinctively brought his arms forward to block, but he wasn’t fast enough.
Now he was standing on the sea, in his former position was Jason.
’So fast!’ Zane thought as he realized.
Jason walked towards him, completely ignoring the person lying on the ground.
He paused in his steps, looking behind him at that Hereon felt chills run down his spine.
Jason continued walking.
’He didn’t kill me.’ Hereon thought, surprise evident on his features.
He watched Jason move towards Zane, as he observed his eyes widened.
’When did he get the staff?’
Jason appeared here without a weapon, it came another surprise to see him without one.
Hereon’s heart pounded in his chest, as if the chest alone wasn’t enough to contain it. The shock of Jason’s resurrection mixed with the dread growing in the pit of his stomach.
Jason’s whole body emanated malice, overshadowing the joy of reunion that someone would feel at a reunion.
The speed with which Jason moved to attack Zane was unnatural. His body didn’t even blur as he closed the distance, it seemed like he had teleport to the naked eye.
Zane was only alive right now because Jason did not land a punch, he only pushed him lightly.
A longsword materialized in Zane’s hands, but his grip was unsteady.
The figure moving towards him was certainly not here to talk.
Jason entered the water, and it was at that moment he moved.
Once again, his movements were too fast for anyone’s eyes to keep up with.
He reappeared before Zane, the boy hadn’t even noticed that he was in front of him.
...
["Essence of a Being’s" effect duration had elapsed]
His black eyes came back to their normal deep mystifying blue.
’Wait...’ Jason thought, the fog in his mind left in an instant.
Chaotic thoughts that once clouded his mind left, replaced by a sense of clarity that flooded in to replace it.
But his memories were cloudy, he couldn’t remember how he got into this place, the last thing he remembered was fighting the Giant Arachnid Spider, and now he was here.
"What was I going to do just now?" Jason murmured to himself, he backed away.
The next second Zane swung his sword, the strike intended to behead him.
"What in the world?" Jason scratched his head confused. "Why are you trying to kill me?"
Zane looked surprised, his grip on his sword faltering.
"Did I do something wrong?" Jason continued with the questions.
"What do you mean?" Zane asked, his voice low.
"I mean did I do something wrong?"
Zane paused, this was obviously how Jason behaved normally. "You don’t remember what you did?"
"No, I don’t."
"You don’t remember that you killed the dungeon boss?" Zane asked again, he searched Jason’s face for any sign of deception.
"Dungeon boss?" Jason was sincerely confused.
’Since when did I fight the dungeon boss?’
He had done something big, and now he was going to bear the consequences for his actions. Even though he didn’t know what he did.
