Chapter 64: The Boss

...

Zane and eight others stood in front of a what seemed like another opening, but upon inspection it was confirmed to be another teleportation point inside the cavern.

Their best bet was that this was the boss room, since after the sub-bosses is the boss directly.

Only eight at a time could enter a boss room, and after his words to the remaining twenty awakeneds he gathered the strongest of the twenty to join him.

His persuasion didn’t work just because of his position as the heir to the clan, but it was also because the benefits that would be gained upon completion of the dungeon.

He had promised to share it equally among the people who participated while claiming the heart for himself.

"Is everyone ready?" Zane asked.

Pale faces nodded fearfully.

’Here goes nothing.’ Zane thought as he moved through the opening in the cave walls.

The view around him morphed to something even he didn’t quite expect, from the rocky ground that he had seen for the past hour.

His leg was submerged in water, the water that enveloped his body reaching his knee wasn’t shallow, a force was allowing him to stand on water, the view around him morphing back to its original beach setting.

Unlike the previous beach setting of the dungeon, this one had palm trees. It didn’t have trees that belonged to a forest and had no dense vegetation.

A true beach setting.

He was the first to enter, after him the others went through.

"Spiders can’t live underwater." That was the first thought Zane had when he realized that he was his foot was submerged in water.

Zane looked into the distance, with his enhanced eyesight he looked into the distance.

There was a figure in the distance standing on the sands.

’Octopus monster?’ Zane wondered. ’Then how are the sub-bosses spiders?’

Its skin was in the color of purple, its replacement for a mouth was tentacles that swirled around. Its shape was humanoid, having the standard arms and legs that humans too had.

The monster’s eyes resembled two red glowing orbs and had a head that was cylindrical.

"Welcome." The boss’s voice rang out in the room. "Welcome to my humble abode."

The others looked around and tried to find the source of the voice, but Zane and the Hachimans in the group could see it.

"I see that you have killed my subordinates." The boss continued. "And I see that you want to kill me as well."

"Before we start I just thought to inform you that you all will die." The tentacles on its head swirled around with more energy. "That is all."

The sound of the monster clapping its hand resounded throughout the air.

’What’s going to happen?’ Zane thought.

In the next second the sea which they stood on rippled as large piranhas burst out, launching into the air as if they were launched out of a cannon, they had the teeth that would be enough to chomp someone in half in one go.

"These should be rank 5 monsters." Zane commanded. "Use your mana on your skin, they won’t be able to pierce it."

As soon as Zane said this he focused on creating his own, with his best affinity, lightning.

He moved back.

He concentrated on using one of his many skills.

[Air Slash]

He swung his dagger in the air, from close-distance it seemed like he was swinging without a target, but from observation one would see that the monsters in the air was getting diced into two.

A skill like this utilized some mana to use, but mana could also be substituted when the skill was mastered. The user being able to weave slices in the air without any magic.

He continued until they had fallen from the sky, the others quickly dealing with the monsters that came down on them.

Another wave of piranhas were launched into the sky before they could even kill off the ones they were dealing with.

Zane, seeing this, refocused his gaze on the boss monster.

It sat leisurely on a throne made of water.

"Stop fighting the piranhas." Zane ordered. "Instead get to the shore."

In that instant he blitzed from his initial position, reappearing on the sand.

Suddenly the monster got off its throne, a wave of water forming at its feet.

"It’s coming at me." Zane muttered.

A smile tugged at his lips.

"It should be a little faster."

He broke into a full-blown sprint, residual electricity residing where he last stood and the sand scorching under his foot.

The idea he had gotten was border-line reckless, one that could potentially end this battle before it could start up or one that would make him regret his decision.

"Wait!" Hereon shouted from behind him.

He had reached the shore and saw Zane and the boss about to clash.

While he may not have liked Zane he knew that if the strongest was to die, the rest of them would die too.

He still had to live...

To pay his last respects to his sister, to bury her.

If he couldn’t do this he didn’t deserve to be called a brother.

In a dash he took off after Zane.

The boss waved its hand, the water at its feet dropping it before reforming as a trident in its hand.

Zane grimaced.

’Its ready for me.’ He thought, but he didn’t slow down.

He only increased the speed at which he moved.

Zane’s figure appeared before the boss monster.

But he didn’t clash with it.

[Spirit Steps]

[Blade Strike]

He spun around, dodging the boss’s spear by a huge gap, his movements becoming much more refined and swift now that he had activated the first skill.

He was now positioned at the monster’s blind spot. its back.

The breathing technique activated before a split-second could pass, he stabbed the monster through the back, or more precisely its systemic heart.

The heart that pumped oxygenated blood to the rest of its body, without it the boss wouldn’t be able to breathe.

Significantly weakening it in their fight, making the battle much easier to win.

’It worked.’ Zane thought his expression one of triumph.

Just then the monster tilted its head to look at him.

"Foolish human." The boss monster mocked. "Judging from your expression you think you just stabbed me in a heart. Do you know that the strongest monster in this cage is different from a normal monster? I, as the strongest monster has six hearts. I am Different from just another monster of my species as they each have three hearts.

But for me, each heart." The monster paused, driving the trident into Zane’s stomach.

"Has a spare."
