Chapter 57: Shabby Raft
Zane frowned.
He had been searching for hours on end but hadn’t found any other monster, it appeared that there were no monsters in this landscape.
He paused his search, then wiped the sweat off his forehead. He wouldn’t admit this to anyone but he was feeling frustrated.
"Am I going to lose?" He asked himself, his voice was laced with disbelief.
Zane, as the heir of the Hachiman clan was expected to take first in this event. It was an unwritten law that the heir of the clan would always be the victor.
But it seemed like he was going to break this rule.
He tousled his hair before resting on a tree.
"What am I going to do?"
Ordinarily this wasn’t a problem, he was sure that sixty hearts would be more than enough to qualify for first place, the qualification for passing was just seven hearts.
But someone else had eight hearts, even having the heart of a sub-boss.
Jason.
Even though Jason was his friend; his only friend, he still couldn’t be happy for someone who had stolen his chance and would obviously make things harder for him.
Jason had eighty hearts, including the heart of the Giant Arachnid Spider sub-boss.
Zane only had sixty hearts, even if he had the hearts of the Black Horned and the Jade Fanged wolves and the leader of the pack it couldn’t measure up to a boss.
His frustration was slowly increasing.
"Are there really no monsters left?" He questioned.
The full island had been scoured and the only things he could find were the goblin home and the wolf cave.
"Where would those monsters be?"
His head went through a myriad of thoughts, they could be in the air or in the sea.
Abruptly he jumped onto the tree he was resting on.
It wasn’t a palm tree that one would see on islands, it was the kind of tree that could be found in a forest.
He landed onto its highest branch before looking into the sky.
Null eyes.
His eyes became a deeper shade of blue.
From this vantage point, and with the aid of his special eyes he began to scan the shimmering water.
He silently hoped that he would find something that would lead him to some monsters, preferably 30.
But even the surface remained silent and nothing pointed that there was life underwater, the only occasional ripple was by the short breeze.
Then his vision caught sight of someone.
The boy and girl put a raft onto the waters and began using wood carved into paddles to row.
"What in the world are they doing?" Zane asked himself.
He looked into the distance, his eyes caught a cavern on a far away desolate island with no signs of life.
"An island!" He exclaimed.
"Is that where the sub-boss and the boss are stationed?" He asked himself, the possibility igniting a spark in him.
After catching a glimpse of the cave he wasted no time, Zane jumped off the tree immediately.
He went through his memories as he tried to figure out how to create a raft, but he couldn’t figure that out.
He looked in the direction of the boy and the girl but he didn’t focus on them, he examined what their raft was made of.
"That’s Hereon." Zane recognized the boy but he didn’t focus on it.
The ring on his finger glowed, in an instant a broadsword appeared in his grasp.
"How much wood will I need?" He wondered.
Hereon hadn’t used much wood, but it was enough for he and the girl.
He examined the trees.
"Too big." He decided.
He used Hereon’s raft as a reference, the tree was too big and it wouldn’t stay afloat.
To build a raft he required branches that were lightweight and plentiful, his eyes unintentionally went to the branches; the trees were large, and the branches would make for a normal tree.
In a moment several branches fell off the trees.
His mind recalled what Hereon’s raft used to hold it together.
"Earth magic."
Zane could sense it.
Hereon had created vines using earth magic and used them to secure the raft together, the vines that would be found here wouldn’t be as durable as the ones he created.
Zane briefly considered using earth magic to construct his own vines, but he had to give up on the thought.
"I’m horrible at earth magic."
Magic depended on the imagination of its caster, how they visualized what they wanted and brought it to reality.
Zane had a talent for lightning magic, but he was horrible at earth magic.
Even to create simple vines would take him a huge load of mana, his visualization process was thrash when it came to earth magic.
He would have to resort to the natural vines.
Thankfully they were abundant.
Once he gathered all the materials he set to work.
First, he aligned the branches side-by-side on the ground, using his sword to cut off the tips to make sure they were all of the same length.
Then, he grabbed the vine and began weaving it through the branches, he made sure to tighten them together.
When he was done with the raft he grabbed a spare branch, it had fallen with the others but he was satisfied with the ones he had used.
The space ring on his finger glowed, a dagger appearing in his grasp.
Zane began to carve a paddle out of the branch.
After some intense minutes of work, it was finally done.
He stepped back to admire his creation.
It wasn’t as refined as Hereon’s – that would take practice, and Zane didn’t plan to do that – but it seemed sturdy enough to carry his weight.
But just to be sure he grabbed one last piece of long vines and secured it tightly around the edge of the raft.
Zane was satisfied with what he created.
He grabbed the raft and held it like it was a prized possession, he walked to the beach.
The people walking him had complex looks.
"Three times in a row, they’re all heading towards the island. Do you think there are monsters there?" Someone whispered to the boy standing next to him.
"It looks like it... As soon as he leaves we’ll make our group a raft so we can check it out for ourselves." The boy agreed.
Whispers like this went around, but Zane remained oblivious to it.
He dropped the raft on the water and watched it for a minute to make sure it was floating.
He stepped onto the raft, his hand gripped the paddle tightly as he began rowing.
The island were in his sights, and he wouldn’t stop until he got there.
