Chapter 51: A Thrashy Inscription
Jason brought out his dagger and began adding jargon to the inscriptions.
’If I can’t have it, the person that gets it will have a faulty one.’ That was the only thought that ran through his brain as he added nonsense to the inscription.
Due to his mental stage 3 stat he was quickly able to discern that it was a summoning magic inscription and come up with a plan to spoil it.
He wasn’t just adding random things to it, he studied each symbol before adding it where he saw appropriate.
He didn’t finish until he was satisfied with his actions.
Jason put the dagger back in his space ring and left the house.
"On second thought, I should have just burned the place down."
...
A group of five walked through the shrubbery.
The group consisted of three girls and two boys, none of them had blue hair; the hair color of the Hachiman clan, thus they were members of the branch families.
"Do you think we’ll find something soon?" One of the boys asked, breaking the silence.
"We should find something soon." One of the girls replied.
They had been walking before daybreak yet had found nothing that proved that there were any monsters in the dungeon. It was like the monsters had been exterminated.
"But we’ve been moving for hours." The other boy retorted.
"If you want to complain you better turn around and head back." Another girl said sharply.
The group thought that their luck was bad and they had been unlucky as they hadn’t encountered any monster, little did they know that they weren’t the only ones.
All of the monsters had been removed from this side of the dungeon, by two boys nonetheless.
"Wait... I think I’ve seen this tree before!" One of the boys said suddenly.
"Damn it, we’ve been walking in circles the whole time!" The other boy’s expression grew frenzied.
It wasn’t a nice feeling knowing that you had been walking in circles for four hours.
The boy broke off from the group.
He sprinted away.
"Hey, come back here!" The girl shouted.
She shook her head.
Just yesterday she had lost her sister after the maniac, Hereon, had called her out to join a group he created just because she spoke her mind.
She had cried for her but no tears would bring her back.
She was even afraid of going to the place where her sister’s corpse was in fear that she would die from shock.
Another girl ran to get the boy back.
She waited but they didn’t return.
"Where did they go?" She asked, but the only answers she was given was shrugs.
"Let’s go after them." She ordered.
Her group went in the direction where the duo had ran off to.
’What is this?’ The girl thought as she saw the view in front of her.
Mud houses.
They looked like they belonged to an ancient civilization.
The boy and girl were heading towards the biggest of all the houses, it didn’t have special decorations on it but it was big. One could safely assume that it should be the home of the leader of such a civilization.
’Hopefully, a monster.’ She thought.
If her team could bag some monsters their heart count would go up, as long as they extracted the heart carefully without damaging it.
The trio steeled themselves before walking towards the largest of all the mud houses, they were alert for any signs of an ambush.
The door was broken, it showed that someone had broken in here.
The girl thought it was her teammate.
"We should split up and check the rooms for monsters, if anyone finds one call out for help and we’ll come to your location."
The two nodded.
They split off, each one went in a different direction while keeping alert.
She went into the bedroom.
"This is... a visualization technique!" She exclaimed. "But what is it?"
She was born in the golden generation, but unlike the others who had awakened rank 0 potential, her potential was rank 1.
And she was the supposed heir to their family since there wasn’t a son.
To ensure that she could keep up with her peers to not ruin their name her parents bought her visualization techniques so she would have an easier time using magic.
Fire, magic, ice, water, lightning and earth, each one had been given to her.
Visualization techniques could only be inscribed in one way, and it seemed even monsters knew that.
Her eyes widened suddenly.
"Summoning magic!" The girl was elated.
Summoning magic required the user to kill someone and use their fleeting soul to summon, if she was able to learn this, it didn’t matter if she had to kill anybody.
"I’ll be able to become stronger than everyone." She came to a sudden realization.
She brought out a pen and paper from her space ring – something she had brought to keep a track of her kills – and began copying the inscriptions on the wall the exact same way she saw it.
She did it hurriedly, but each of her hand’s movement made sure to capture it perfectly.
While she copied it her ears were wide open, she needed to make sure no one else got their hands on it.
She finished writing the inscriptions down on her notebook before putting them back in her space ring.
The girl hurriedly brought her palm forward and began forming fire.
Or more precisely, she was using fire magic.
In ten seconds she was done materializing it, she moved backwards before shooting the ball of flames forward.
The dried mud couldn’t take the impact of the blast and crumpled.
The girl came closer and inspected the mud blocks that had fallen.
They were all charred, making it impossible to read the inscriptions on the wall.
"It’s done." She told herself with a slight smile.
Footsteps. They were coming.
All four had come back, attracted by the noise.
"What happened?" One of the boys asked. "Was it a monster?"
She shook her head. "It was a trap, it would have taken my head off if I hadn’t recognized it in time and blasted it."
It was a lie, she was going to read the inscriptions of the visualization technique a secret.
"Damn." The other boy said. "But I didn’t find anything on my end."
"Me neither."
"This is the bedroom." She gestured towards the bed. "It’s only to be expected that there was a trap here."
"Did any of you find the monsters?" She quickly changed the topic.
"Nope."
Everyone responded in the negative.
"Well, I guess we should check the other houses." She said before leading them outside.
They split up, each of them checking a house.
As the girl entered another mud building a smile spread on her face.
She could only think about the future.
Summoning magic was one of the highest ranks of magic, if she had fifty bodies she would be able to summon a rank 1.
Then she wouldn’t have to worry about only awakening as a rank 1.
She could only pray for the future to come soon.
Little did she know that the inscription for the summoning magic had been modified so badly that it would only damage her mana reserves if she dared to use summoning magic based on it.
Jason had put so many random markings that if anybody dared to try it they would damage the organ where mana stayed.
Then, the practitioner would lose the right to call themselves an awakened since they could no longer store mana.
But the girl wasn’t aware of this, she could only hope to find a monster soon so that she could practice it.
