Chapter 49: Rabies

The last thing Zane wanted to die here in the middle of a dungeon, when he knew he was destined for things much greater.

He kept on struggling, the only thing that gave him the will to continue was hope he could only hope that he would find someone who was awake and would be willing to help him.

Each pull felt like an eternity, yet he still committed himself to the task.

’Finally...’ Zane thought, as momentary relief washed over him.

He had arrived back at the beach, and to his luck, there were still people there.

He tried to open his mouth but no words came out, or more precisely, he didn’t know if anything came out as he couldn’t hear.

’Is that a monster?’

There was a being frolicking in the waves, he couldn’t see clearly as the Null eyes required mana, even the passive state needed mana and he didn’t have it.

His eyes had turned black.

They were not red like members of the Hachiman clan were supposed to have.

But the silhouette he could make out clearly had a humanoid body.

The figure turned his head towards Zane’s direction. It began panicking, its movements becoming much more rushed as it tried to finish what it was doing.

It then went to the shore and put on... clothing?

’Is this really a monster? Or is it a human?’ Zane’s fear disappeared, being replaced by curiosity.

He previously feared that if it was a monster it would kill him in his weakened state, but now he was confused.

The being began coming to him.

Zane could begin to see the person’s outlines.

’Jason.’

Jason walked to him. The boy crouched, taking the space ring from his finger before wearing it on his pinky.

The ring glowed in a dim light as Jason took out an item, or more specifically, a healing elixir.

He examined Zane’s body, looking carefully for wounds before putting the liquid in the elixir on them.

He even poured the elixir into his ears after noticing that Zane couldn’t hear, it would be to amend the ear drums.

"What happened?" Jason asked. "You look like you were bitten by wolves, or at least ravenous beasts."

Zane’s ear stung as he heard Jason’s word due to the elixir.

"Rank 5 wolves." Zane replied.

’What type of wolves are in rank 4 dungeons?’ Jason asked himself.

’No idea.’

"You’re lucky I found you."

"If I didn’t you would probably bleed to death out here." His eyes lingered on the deep gashes on Zane’s side, the torn flesh and the bleeding leg.

They had begun to heal at a visible pace and it wouldn’t be long before the boy would be back to peak fighting condition, that was the power of a healing elixir.

"There’s an antidote for poisoning in my ring, help me get it out."

Jason lifted an eyebrow, he had just healed Zane so what was the need for an antidote?

"How did you get poisoned?"

"Rabies."

’Say no more!’

A blue vial instantly appeared in Jason’s hand, he pried open Zane’s mouth and poured the contents down his throat.

How could he not know of rabies?

Like his friends, in his past life he too had bitten by a dog and had to take an injection so he wouldn’t get rabies.

His mom had scolded him and beaten him up severely before taking him to the hospital to get treated.

But, in this new world, he didn’t know that monsters had rabies in them.

He would have to make a note to kill all animal type monsters without touching them.

’Why the hell are his eyes black?!’ Jason thought.

Even if someone wasn’t using the Null eyes it was still active, but in its passive state instead.

Zane’s eye color had gone from blue to black, it hadn’t even changed to red which was the color of all the Hachimans who didn’t awaken the Null eyes.

Zane’s breathing recovered gradually got better after sometime and his connection to his mana reserve was re-established. His eyes regained their familiar, deep blue color.

He was even able to think properly again.

He stood up, the gashes on his skin and the bites were now history.

It was evident that Jason had used a high-ranked healing elixir, the liquid healed him in just a few minutes.

Zane looked at him with a critical eye before asking dryly. "What the fuck are you wearing?"

Jason was topless, his upper body was on full display. And for the lower garments he wore nothing more than a pair of red boxers.

They were originally the color blue, but after getting soaked by the goblins blood it turned red.

The look on Jason’s face turned sour.

"That’s the thank you I get."

"You’re even lucky you got a thank you." Zane retorted. "And why are you wearing that in the middle of the night? Don’t you have anything else to wear?!"

Jason chuckled, the boy was clearly not here when he returned with innards covering his body.

"I don’t. All my other clothes were soaked in blood." Jason answered honestly. "I left them on the sand to dry."

"I thought that someone who was as skilled in fighting as you would know how to avoid blood from spraying out of their victim’s head." Zane’s blue hair was blown by the wind. "Wasn’t it only goblins you fought?"

Jason smirked.

He was about to brag.

"It was only goblins, but I exterminated all the goblins in the dungeon."

"I killed every Black horned wolf and Jade fanged wolf in the dungeon." Zane countered quickly, as if he was expecting it.

"I killed a Giant Arachnid Spider, which was also a sub-boss in this dungeon."

"I killed the leader of the wolf’s pack..." Zane paused, the weight of Jason’s words sinking in.

’A triple.’ He thought.

"Where did you find it? I’ll go kill the other boss since you probably ran away from it."

"It was summoned by the goblin leader when it saw that I was too powerful." Jason bragged.

’Goblin summoner?’

"Hobgoblin?" Zane questioned.

Jason replied in the positive.

"So you also killed the hobgoblins off?"

Jason replied in the positive again.

"That isn’t really a feat. They’re only rank 5 monsters, ten goblins can’t even take down a single Black horned wolf or Jade fanged wolf.

And two hobgoblins could only match a single one of those wolves. In essence, my hunt was far more fruitful than yours."

"But I took down the Spider." Jason argued, he wasn’t about to lose here.

"And after I recover, I’ll find and take down the other sub-boss."

"After you came back deaf and infected with a disease after just fighting some wolves, you’ll be lucky if you come out with only a lost limb."

"Like you?" Zane retorted, barely able to hold his laughter back.

"Preferably, a leg." Jason added dryly.

"Whatever." Zane shrugged it off.

His wounds had completely healed after their exchange and the only thing he needed was rest, and then he would be peak fighting form.

Jason laughed a bit as Zane pretended to be nonchalant.

"How many hearts do you have?" Jason asked.

"60. What about you?"

"80."

"I’ll surpass you soon enough."

"If it’ll make you feel better, sure."
