Chapter 47: Wolves
Chapter 47: Wolves
Zane stored the hearts he had gotten from the wolves he had killed in his space ring.
He stared at his bloody hands, they were a reminder of how he had to get the heart, he began to manipulate mana.
It formed water, he used the water to wash his hands, making sure they didn’t have a trace of blood on them.
He glanced warily at his surroundings, after making sure that there was no one following him, Zane continued on his path.
He walked cautiously through the path he had chosen to take, so far he hadn’t encountered any other monsters in the dungeon.
His thoughts were brought to an abrupt halt as he moved out of the bushes.
" A cave." Zane muttered.
His mind went through a number of possibilities; it was possible that this contained resources, but then again, it could be the wolves cave.
Black horned wolves couldn’t live in the wilderness without any shelter, they needed a home.
And a cave fit all the requirements.
"If I want to get their hearts I need a plan." Zane decided.
Black horned wolves were deaf and in a dimly lit cave they would still be able to see clearly.
Then there was also the situation of the mates of the monster.
Their mates were the Jade fanged wolves.
That made it much harder.
While black horned wolves were totally deaf because their horns destroyed their eardrums, Jade fanged wolves were much better off than them.
Jade fanged wolves were monsters that had skin the color of Jade, teeth that could easily crush rock and frighteningly good hearing for rank 5 monsters.
Black horned wolves were hard to take down if they saw their opponent, but they were easy to kill if taken unaware.
Those wolves were deaf.
But Jade fanged wolves were different, they had good hearing unlike their mates and could still see, added to a canine’s sense of smell it made the monster three problems in one.
They were once humans like black horned wolves but like the latter also mutated, gaining the characteristics of wolves.
If he wanted to enter a cave – specifically a den full of both breeds of wolves – he needed a plan, even a rank 3 couldn’t take down those wolves without sustaining serious injuries.
And if he was unlucky the whole pack could be inside.
They hunted in the morning and didn’t leave their cave throughout the rest of their day, the black horned wolves he saw were still hunting because they had not found their prey.
"If only I learned levitate." Zane could only berate himself for not learning it.
By the time he was offered the rank 5 skill he didn’t see it as useful, he would only have to reach rank 2 and then would be able to learn float which was a much better alternative.
Now that he looked back on it, he couldn’t even blame himself, there were many monsters that could be found in a rank 4 dungeon, so it wasn’t counted for when the black horned wolves and jade fanged wolves were in this dungeon.
He could only blame his father for choosing this specific dungeon.
"A plan."
He said the words again to regain focus, his thoughts were drifting towards unimportant things.
His mind went through a lot of scenarios and possibilities, each one had a number of faults that could ultimately only increase the difficulty of what he was to do.
’What if I just charge in?’ Zane immediately discarded the thought.
If he began running before he could even enter the den he would be met by several wolves.
In the end he decided on a plan.
Zane would use water to dampen a portion of the ceiling of the cave and then break through it. But instead of going through the ceiling he would move to the entrance of the cave and lay in ambush for the monsters as they would want to find out the cause.
Then, he would launch his chain lightning simultaneously on six monsters, with their death he would commence the fight.
And if he was lucky the portion he broke through would have some black horned wolves under it, and they would die without even knowing how.
Immediately, Zane leaped from his current position onto a nearby tree.
He landed on one of its branches before turning his concentration to magic, he stretched out an arm and began.
He closed his eyes and then began forming it, a ball of water that would be enough to do the damage.
Zane manipulated mana, bending the energy to his will as he created it.
The boy opened his eyes, his outstretched hand pointing towards the cave.
The water bubble was of medium size, once it hit the cave it would burst, proceeding to release all the pent-up water onto the cave.
Zane released it.
The ball blasted forward, its form threatening to break under the speed but it still managed to hold up.
*Bang
That was the sound a bubble made when it popped.
It collided with the rocky surface of the cave.
A spray of water erupted, it dampened the ceiling. The once dusty and dry rocks now wet.
In an instant, Zane jumped forward.
He drew mana into his body and forced it to increase his strength, this wasn’t on the level of a buff, a basic technique that could be easily done by all those who had magic.
His muscles tightened as he propelled himself upwards.
*Boom
The ground cracked under his weight, the softened rocks could not take the strain.
’It’s going to crack.’ Zane thought before jumping off immediately.
The moment Zane leaped, the ceiling above him fractured.
Rocks tumbled, they cascaded downwards in an uncoordinated fashion. He felt the wind and debris swirling up as the stone fell.
The force he had generated and the water’s effect were enough to cause a cave-in, it was only a matter of time before the wolves began pouring out.
A black horned wolf came out of the den, its confusion evident on its face, totally oblivious to the cause of the cave-in.
’They won’t see me even if I make all the noise in the world.’
Mana assembled at his fingertips as he manipulated it to his will.
In a second his fingertips began sparking, as if they were pleading for him to release them onto the world.
’Go.’
He connected two fingers.
The lightning surged forward, it connected to the monster forming a zigzag connection between them.
The wolf couldn’t move because of the static, even its body was forced to stay in place due to the static.
A pleasant smell permeated the air as its body began burning, like the smell of bacon.
Its internal organs burned, its heart began to beat irregularly and even its skin and fur were burning.
After a few seconds the wolf fell onto the ground.
It was completely lifeless.
Its charred body sizzling with residual electricity. The smell of charred flesh wafted through the air, mixing with the earthy scent of the damp cave.
But Zane didn’t celebrate.
As soon as that wolf fell countless others began pouring out, their confusion from their den’s collapse and their dead comrade turned into rage after seeing Zane.
Growls.
Their growls were the only sound that were made.
And among them were jade fanged wolves.
Before they had the chance to move, Zane fired four more chains of lightning.
The zigzagging bolts of lightning connected with their prey: four jade fanged wolves.
Unlike the black horned wolves, the jade fanged wolves were not immediately overpowered by the chain lightning.
"Haaaawuuuuu!!!" The wolves let out howls.
But these weren’t normal howls, they were one of the wolves skills!
As the sound hit the boy’s ears he was momentarily distracted, the loud sound making his eardrums throb in response.
The chain lightning dispersed.
Magic could only be used while the user was concentrated.
He was momentarily disoriented.
One of the wolves lunged forward.
Its teeth gleaming as it bit down on Zane’s arm.
