Chapter 43: Giant Arachnid Spider
Chapter 43: Giant Arachnid Spider
The spider continued its relentless attack, each hit was aimed to kill but none of the attacks could get through.
Jason was confident of his victory and continued to stay on the defensive. Each step he took closed the gap bit by bit as the spider’s head entered his range.
The monster had a simple attack pattern, thus it was easy to dodge its attacks, he didn’t have much difficulty after he got used to it.
*Whoosh
A leg wheezed by him but he managed to dodge with another near miss.
’First, take out the eyes.’ That seemed like the smartest thing to do.
A handicapped opponent wasn’t as strong as one at 100%, he knew this by experience as he was stuck with one arm.
His left arm at that.
Also the eyes were the softest spot.
’Now to get its eyes.’ Jason decided.
He would rather not take the risk of allowing his weapon break.
It was as he made the decision that he felt something was off about the monster. It got easier to dodge the spider’s attacks!
They had slowed down considerably.
’Or is because I got used to its attacks?’
He ducked to the right as another leg came sailing.
’No. That isn’t right.’
His eyes could be tricked, but his ears couldn’t.
The sound of the legs hitting the ground had definitely slowed down. Before it was almost rhythmic, but now it was dragging on more than it was supposed to.
Jason was confident in his hearing.
An uneasy feeling washed over him.
The spider’s mandibles were twitching, like it was about to release something.
’Does it want to eat me?’
Jason was ready to jump, there was only 2 meters between him and the monster’s head, however he felt that something was off.
He trusted his instincts.
Instead of leaping forward he jumped sideways.
The monster shot out an orb web at his last position.
It was wheel-like, very similar to those that were on windows and between plants... Except this one was a head larger than him and thicker than it was supposed to be!
The web shot out into the clearing, the average plants weren’t enough to hold it down.
"SSSHHHH." The spider wasn’t done yet. It re-positioned its head at Jason’s direction and prepared to shoot.
It spat out a murky, purple liquid from its mouth.
Jason rolled sideways on the ground to avoid it, he had a faint guess of what it was but wasn’t sure.
He got back on his feet and looked at his right.
The space he stood on was dissipating, it was once green with some blood on it. But now the ground was slowly disappearing as the liquid sunk into the ground.
It went in a long, straight line and even reached and dissolved some of the goblin bodies.
He had been lucky when he dodged sideways, if he had tried to roll backwards his skin would have dissolved.
Jason gulped.
The spider seemed to sense his agitation and turned towards him again.
Its legs skittered across the grass.
In no time it was before him and as he turned his head he was met with another leg.
The crimson red liquid escaped his mouth as the spider hit him squarely in the guts.
The wind was knocked out of him, the force of the blow sending him flying backwards.
This time there was no tree to catch him, Jason tumbled on the ground after landing before getting up.
"Again." Jason got up quickly, he ignored the pain in his stomach. "At least it wasn’t in the chest again."
Giant Arachnid Spider.
A tough sideboss to crack.
He was finally facing against an opponent stronger than him.
’I wonder if Zane would be able to do this.’
Zane was a rank 3 awakened. The boy’s mere presence had a slight risk of causing a dungeon destabilization.
The monster had more weight in a leg than Zane’s full weight combined, and coupling it with strength was making the attacks more powerful, it was no wonder that the attacks were so lethal.
Way out of his comfort zone.
His thoughts unconsciously shifted towards Zane, but it was for good reason.
Move closer to it and be met by acid and webbing.
Move back and be met with legs.
He didn’t know about the spider but he was starting to get a little tired.
Despite his stage 4 late strength he still had his limits. First was a goblin horde, then hobgoblins and now a giant arachnid spider summoned by a dying goblin summoner.
"Cutting through stone." Jason muttered.
He could do that normally, by applying the right pressure he would be able to break the rock. Just, that wasn’t possible with the spider’s chitinous armor, it simply wouldn’t cut it and would only break the sword.
His weapon would be the one that would break instead if he put all his strength but couldn’t handle the weapon well enough.
"Breathing technique. Blade strike." Four words.
Jason calmed himself, he thought not of the spider charging towards him and not of the wounds on his chest. He closed his eyes.
He took in a deep breath before starting the process.
His muscles contracted.
"And spirit steps." The words were silent.
He used the skill.
He realized that if he was more agile he would be able to close the distance.
The spider was almost in front of him.
Jason opened his eyes as the spider put a leg forward.
But Jason was too fast, his movements became more fluid, as if a booster was applied and added to his velcro.
The result...
He sidestepped before the monster’s leg could make contact with him and slashed downwards.
The katana was supposed to break on impact, Jason was neither an expert with his left arm or an expert with the blade.
But the leg was cleanly cut off. The large limb falling onto the ground after being severed from the body.
Blood sprayed out of the wound like a faucet and in an instant, the liquid stained the ground.
Jason moved quickly, before the monster could react to the pain he jumped onto the monster’s head.
The katana flashed across the monster’s face. And a split second later blood sprayed out, the eyes were permanently closed.
The spider howled and thrashed about.
Jason did not miss this opportunity, he landed on the ground before proceeding to cut all its legs off.
Now that it was blind he could take it out by its blind spot.
It could only move around with its hind legs and couldn’t use them to attack. Its thrashings were worthless if he couldn’t get him.
He also made sure to avoid the mouth so he would be hit by an unexpected acid spray or get caught in a web.
Jason cut off one limb.
Two.
Three...
Five.
The monster couldn’t not stand with only two limbs, it fell onto its own severed limbs and blood poured out of them.
He couldn’t attack the other legs so he jumped back onto the monster’s head. The spider was struggling, it was completely immobile and could only spray acid in a single direction.
He stabbed into the head multiple times.
Jason had a savage look on his face as the blood splashed around.
"Die!" He yelled before thrusting the sword into its middle.
It was still alive.
"Die!"
Jason continued until he had snuffed the life out of the monster.
He released his breathing technique.
Jason dragged the blade on the body of the monster before getting off.
The once formidable spider fell to the hands of a thirteen year old child. A one-armed one, no less.
