Chapter 159: It (2)

Jason nodded once again.

"I see."

He stood up, getting off the chair and without a look back opened the door and went through it.

Without speaking a word he left through the way he had come from, but he had looked around as he left, making sure to inspect the faces of the people he walked past.

Finally, he came across the Amaterasu clan member he had welcomed him into the spacious building.

"Thank you."

Without another word he opened the door and left.

As soon as he came outside he ran as fast as he could, a speed which could only be described by non-awakeners as a "black blur".

He wasn’t thinking about being stealthy, he was just trying to avoid someone, and get to someone as soon as possible.

He turned to stop in an alleyway after running for sometime.

Jason didn’t speak to himself and jumped onto the building, then, he jumped from building to building faster than he had ever done before.

...

This settlement was large, larger than the average settlement by a huge margin.

But even then, reaching the outskirts were possible, unfortunately, he had started too late. Also, he made sure to play it safe, cautiously dodging the numerous guards that were there.

Now, he felt that he was close to the outskirts, but he had to stop for the night.

Traveling in the night was favorable for him, but his eyes felt droopy, like they were threatening to close at any moment, even when he was traveling he felt it.

Jason let out a deep breath as he stopped in an alleyway.

’I’ve been traveling for awhile.’

He thought, as he rested his back against the cold wall.

He was sweating a little.

’Now, I can rest.’

’And think.’

He hadn’t had a single thought except how to avoid the guards.

Now, the night felt heavy yet quiet – it didn’t feel this way when he was outside settlements and always on guard for monsters, it felt much easier as the guards here could be troublesome – something that Jason didn’t find good.

It was in this kind of environment that he found it hard to sleep.

’To think that he’s the first person I would see.’

Jason didn’t know him before, all he knew that someone who had the Izanagi of the Izanagi clan was worth knowing for him.

If there was anything he wanted the most, it was the All-burning flames, the secret technique of the Wukong clan and the Izanagi.

Ever since the incident where he had almost died he always wanted it, though, he didn’t know how he got to that state.

’After the minor breakout I’ll copy the Izanagi from him.’

A slight grin spread on his face.

’With that, I can evade death.’

The Izanagi had one weakness, just one weakness that stopped it from being the most powerful of all the other of the great

It required 20% of the user’s total mana to use.

Mana was also expended during fights, so, if the user had only 25% of total mana and revived only to die again they wouldn’t be able to revive.

’When those a dozen or so rank 0s are done with, I can get Izanagi and I’ll be done with this place.’

He thought.

Living the life of a fugitive wasn’t easy, even if the people he was hiding from were much weaker than him. Compared to the life he led now, staying a room bored with only his thoughts were much better.

He felt the cool air of the night, though, the cold did little to ease his mind.

He could hear the sound of feet against the paved road.

Jason didn’t hold his breath.

’Are they coming here?’

It would be unfortunate for the guards if they came into this alleyway.

If the came here, they wouldn’t live to see how the next day nor how they died.

"I’m just saying..."

The man’s voice trailed on, the words flowing out of his mouth.

Both guards discussed among themselves, they barely focused on the path they were going.

’Unfortunately for them, they are.’

But he didn’t even bother getting up.

As their footsteps and voices neared, he believed, so did their death.

Finally, they turned into the alleyway, the lamps they held illuminating the path.

"I’m just saying that if the dungeons opened up much in these parts we would be screwed."

"I doubt it, we have those rank 0s to help us."

"Do you think they’ll really-?"

The first guard’s words hung in his throat and he struggled to speak, he was horrified. His partner’s face wasn’t better either, both of them seemed like they had seen a ghost.

However, the second’s guard face returned to normal.

A figure laying on the ground, covered in blood, lying on the ground and looking straight at them. He looked r

"Who’s that?"

The other guard questioned.

The first guard was beyond scared, his instincts screamed for him to run.

"Don’t you-"

But he was too petrified to speak.

’So they don’t know me?’

A grin spread on Jason’s face.

’So I’ll scare them a little before their death.’

The first guard reached his shaky hands into his pockets, but as he did so Jason began to speak.

"Humans don’t fear the darkness..."

He began, his tone cold.

A cold aura began to emanate around him.

The first guard shuddered, unable to bring the device out of his pockets.

"...They fear what lurks in the darkness."

His grin grew wider.

At this moment Jason didn’t look like a human, he looked like a demon.

His face, his grin, it just wasn’t human-like.

"That’s why they call me the Unknown Darkness."

The second guard was confused, however, the first guard had much more control over his body.

The fear...

The adrenaline...

All of it coursed through his veins, and in a moment he had vanished, the sound of his shoes against the paved road resounding.

"The-"

The second guard fell lifeless onto the ground, a hole in his back.

But Jason wasn’t there.

The first guard was running, he wasn’t looking back to check if he was being pursued, all he wanted to do was to leave this place as soon as possible.

He didn’t want any trouble.

The Unknown Darkness was a weird case, but also a strong one.

He was supposed to be a cripple yet he was allegedly able to use mana.

The guard’s eyes widened.

"The fuck?!"

He murmured to himself, his eyes wide open to the point where it seemed like they would split.

The person he was running from, why was the person in front of him?

Before he could continue thinking he crashed into the person.

It was like ramming into an unbreakable wall, one fused with both steel and mana.

He didn’t even shake from it, the person he rammed into was un-moving.

"Where do you think you’re going?"

Jason questioned, his tone devoid of warmth.

He stared at the man on the ground.

"Wh- what do you want?"

He looked vulnerable right now, like anything from the faintest touch could kill him.

The man scurried backwards.

"I want to kill you."

"Or perhaps, do you have something you could give me?"

In an instant both of them were back at the alleyway.

"Tell me everything you know about the Civilian Association, if you tell me everything I’ll let you live, if not I’ll kill you."

Jason said.

"Wa-?"

"Don’t question it, just talk."

Jason pointed a weapon at him, it was his dagger.

"Otherwise, you’ll end up like your friend there, I’m not sure you want to end up like him."

It was an obvious threat obvious enough for someone clouded with fear to realize the hidden meaning about the threat.

Tell me everything or all your knowledge will go to waste.

The man shook uncontrollably.

"I- I sho-ld?"

Jason’s grin remained.

Instead he thrust the dagger at the man’s shoulders.

"I said tell me everything you know or you’ll die?"

To the person he was talking to his voice was booming, but in reality his voice was low.

He realized that it shouldn’t cross a certain threshold, otherwise he might be found out by other patrolling guards.

"Did you hear me?"

Jason brought out his weapon, only to thrust it again.

The man groaned in pain.

"O- Okay."

Jason left the weapon in his shoulder as he awaited for the man to begin.

He twisted it, bringing out another groan out of the man.

"Talk already, my patience won’t last another minute."

"I’m coming, I’m coming, I’m co-"

The sentence could never be finished as the speaker’s head fell onto the ground.

Jason clicked his tongue in annoyance before leaping onto the roof.

’That guy didn’t speak even after I gave him a chance.’

Just that once he was thinking of sparing the guy in exchange for giving him the information he needed.

Unfortunately, he still didn’t speak.

’A pact.’

It wasn’t a hard realization.

Pacts could be used to bound people to work against their will, but it required the permission of both parties.

It wouldn’t be weird if each guard was never supposed to reveal their secrets.

He leaped from rooftop to rooftop, his movements fluid. Each leap was a blend of practice and technique – a mode of transport that was being used in a place that would soon be a battleground.

"This night is going to last long."

He wasn’t going to rest now.

His calm had been disturbed, so there was no need getting back to it.

He had people to meet.
