Chapter 142: Clan Heir (1)
... 8 Months Later
Zane’s Perspective
Outside Of The A-Dungeon
A boy, about 15 years of age, with cascading blue hair and deep blue eyes that were as mysterious as they were charming.
He wore a sleeveless black shirt and blue pants, he positioned himself with a broadsword.
’Almost a year now.’
He thought, he took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
’A year since both Hereon and Jason disappeared.’
He charged forward as he pushed mana into his feet.
Zane Hachiman swung the sword.
The sword moved through the air, it cut through the training dummy’s neck.
He stopped.
The metallic head fell onto the ground with a thud before rolling on the ground until its head faced Zane, the boy turned backwards staring at the faceless head of the dummy.
He sent his sword back into his storage ring.
’Are they dead?’
There had been no news of them and after a few months life returned to normal.
They weren’t spoken off and nobody seemed to remember them, as if they didn’t even exist in the first place.
’Did that kid really die, along with his sister?’
The bloodline of the second elder was supposedly gone, one of his kin vanished without a trace while the other died while fighting a sub-boss called a Giant Arachnid Spider in the rank 4 dungeon.
"Hahaha."
Suddenly he started laughing.
Maniacally, without a care in the world.
In this brief moment of euphoria he felt as if he was standing on top of the entire world, completely seperated from the likes of others; whether they were awakeneds or humans.
Like a god.
But it was only brief and he soon regained control of himself.
"Crap."
He murmured to himself as he came to his senses.
’The drug is acting up again.’
He channeled mana into his space ring, it caused the ring to glow in a dim blue light.
He brought out an elixir, one with a standard bottle cap, not too fancy like the healing or mana potions and downed the contents.
He felt his stomach swirling and the odd taste clinging in his mouth, but he forced himself to swallow everything.
It settled at the pit of his stomach.
He felt something churn inside him, like a wave of condensed mana.
’I forgot about today’s medication.’
He thought, after that he continued his thought process.
’Damned mother.’
After he had turned 15 many months ago his mother began giving his supplements. At first he didn’t think much of them, he only found it strange that his parents would suddenly take interest in him.
For a while he didn’t notice it, the only things changes in him were his sudden outbursts during practice when he would feel rage and suddenly rush at his target with no restraint.
It quickly evolved into uncontrollable bits where he would suddenly start laughing.
It didn’t take him long to realize what had happened to him and why.
Lucky for him, he had medication; streaming his mana into a bottle and leaving it to stagnate before finally storing it in his storage ring for use.
He had found out that it worked and even created it himself.
’Stupid life.’
Zane thought, staring into the distance.
Training dummies were lined up on the grounds, each of them positioned a meter away from each other.
They weren’t scattered, instead they were lined up in a somewhat straight line.
’I’m tired.’
He let out a sigh, one that carried all the weight that he felt was on his shoulder.
The weight of his responsibility as heir of the Hachiman clan.
The space ring on his finger glowed up once again as the broadsword was gone.
’But, I still have to finish this.’
He felt his mana, pulling his mind into a field of his own consciousness. There he constructed something.
Lightning magic sparked and mana crackled at his fingertips.
The air around him began to grow hotter as he waved his hands in a sign.
The thought process was long as he visualized everything, not even skipping a minor detail.
Zane extended a hand towards the training dummies.
For a long moment, there was nothing, if someone was watching they would think that he had failed.
Then, it happened.
A large blue bolt of lightning shot out of his hand.
It was fast.
Insanely fast.
And large.
In the blink of an eye, it went through all the targets. The remaining parts of the dummies were charred as soon as it made contact with them and moved onto the next.
Some only had feet left.
It traveled a great distance quickly and seemed to go on forever.
However, it was stopped when the Hachiman curled his hands into a fist.
The lightning vanished as if it were never there in the first place, the only reminder of it was the burnt training dummies.
*Bang
A deafening sound rang out in Zane’s ear, prompting him to cover his ears with his hands.
It lasted for a short moment before it was gone.
When it was, he removed his hands from his ear and took a look at the devastation.
"Lightning is powerful."
He said to himself as he walked towards the closest training dummy.
A unique scent assaulted his nose.
A distinct acrid, or metallic scent.
It was too hot to the touch, even he had to restrain himself from touching it.
Zane used his left hand to blow away the smell.
"But its side-effect, thunder, is too loud."
There were no such things as spells or anything that gave an instruction on how to use magic in this world. It all depended on visualization, and for visualization there were visualization techniques, though they were frowned upon.
But to use such strong magic like he had done, Zane did not use a visualization technique.
’Lightning’ was his own creation, he had spent months working on it when he was just ten years old, and it was only when he was twelve that he finally understood it.
The reason he had created such destructive magic was Jason.
The boy whom magic didn’t seem to reach, he realized that it did reach him, it was just weakened severely when it came in range of Jason.
Because of this realization he managed to create lightning bolts, condensing mana into them so they could reach him. But he hadn’t stopped at that...
He wanted to create something that even if severely weakened would still have to firepower to reach him and burn him alive.
’Damn it.’
The sole reason he had created ’lightning’ was to fry Jason.
And now, he didn’t know where Jason was!
It was infuriating.
There was also another person he could have tested it on, Hereon, but that person had disappeared as well.
He only had training dummies to test it on.
"Where did that guy go?"
He said aloud, staring at the clouds that were blocking the sun.
"Excuse me, young master."
Immediately, Zane turned his head towards the intruder. He hadn’t even noticed when she sneaked up on him.
"What do you want?"
He stared at her, his eyes unblinking, as if they wanted to stare through her sole.
"Your medication."
She said calmly, dropping the translucent vial that contained a green liquid on the ground next to him.
"I’ll be taking my leave."
She stated as she turned around.
Zane watched her as she left, or more specifically a body part of hers.
"If I were to slice her head off, would she die?"
He wondered aloud, though his voice was low.
She was the one bringing him the meditation everyday and he had grown to hate her, he couldn’t even do anything about her.
Everyday he watched her head as she left, he wondered if he would be able to slice it into two swiftly.
"No."
He shook his head.
The supplements were getting to him.
When she was out of sight, he sent a bolt of lightning towards the vial.
"Done for today."
He murmured as he stared at the broken pieces and the gas floating towards the sky.
With another sigh out of his lips he laid down on the ground.
’Stupid life.’
He thought.
Life always had a way of messing up someone’s plans, he had aspirations for life, but due to Jason’s disappearance he had to change some things.
Plans that he had meticulously thought about. Just because of one change, the whole thing fell apart.
’Its always changing.’
He knew that it wasn’t only him, it was everyone who was affected.
He knew that Jason too had aspirations for life before he suddenly disappeared.
Everyone did...
’Do I have something I’m supposed to be doing?’
Zane couldn’t help but wonder.
He had been staring at the sky for a straight 40 minutes.
He got up slowly.
Then, he began laughing.
"Hahaha!"
A brief moment of ecstasy, one where the noises that came out of his just felt like the right reaction from him.
For no reason, he just began laughing.
To normal people, it could be considered a sign of insanity. A moment where one loses their grip to sanity and treads down the path of insanity.
It was brief, and before he knew it, it was gone.
Slowly, he stopped.
The realization that he had laughed just a few seconds more than usual donned on him.
It made him chuckle.
"Maybe I should stop thinking about the future."
He mused as he left.
"Maybe instead I should work on keeping myself sane."
He was wasn’t talking to anyone, but his voice was surprisingly loud.
Then, he said something quietly.
"If I can..."
Now, he was talking to himself.
