Chapter 140: It’s Just A Small Settlement (2)

Jason stared at the man, unblinking.

His grin vanished at the man’s words.

He didn’t understand why he would just randomly call out his skin color, it had nothing to do with his current predicament.

’Is this guy retarded?’

He thought.

"W- what... do you want?"

The man struggled to form his words, his mouth moving as if they were tripping over the words.

"We won’t do anything to you if you cooperate, we only need you to open the veil."

Kira said.

"The veil?"

Beads of sweat fell down from the man’s head onto the floor.

"Let’s go."

The man finally began moving, he retracted his hand before beginning the walk.

With Kira constantly holding a kunai to his neck he seemed to be very obedient.

The streets were surprisingly empty.

"Aren’t there any people in the settlement?"

Kira asked.

To him, it seemed unnatural that this kind of operation would be this easy. Normally, some awakeneds would have already found him and began fighting.

Now, he didn’t even come across civilians.

"The- there’s a curfe- curfew."

The man fumbled over the words.

Kira didn’t speak anymore.

’Why is he stammering?’

Jason wondered.

He felt that Kira should also be thinking about this very same thing.

If this guy was really the mayor of the settlement he should have gone through at least a single life or death situation, he was also part of the Civilian-clan war.

But with the way he was fumbling, as if he was almost afraid of getting caught...

It was like he was afraid of being discovered of something.

"What rank are you?"

Jason asked, breaking the silence.

The man’s head jolted, causing the kunai to graze his nape.

"What rank?"

The man repeated the words.

"Rank 1."

He said.

Jason nodded and went back to minding his business.

His eyes moved around as he tried to locate any hidden enemies, but there were none.

’Why is this guy so pathetic if he’s a rank 1?’

’If he’s this pathetic, shouldn’t he have guards to protect him?’

Something didn’t make sense about this guy.

They reached the outskirts.

There were quite a few people waiting for them there.

"What?!"

The man couldn’t help but shout.

His eyes seemed to be deceiving him yet again.

Asahi, Sean and Lyra were there.

But they were the only ones that were standing.

2 dozen awakeneds were lying battered on the ground, some severely injured with blood dripping out of their wounds.

Kira didn’t stop the man, he allowed the man run over to the awakened closest to him.

His wife had come to check up on him as he left the bed, and when she seen him she only watched quietly.

When they had gone a good distance away, she went to request for the help of all the other awakeneds that were present in the town.

And they laid in ambush for them, only to get ambushed themselves.

She had a deep wound in her abdomen and blood poured out profusely. Out of all the awakeneds, she was the one that was the most damaged.

The mayor of the settlement thought that if he appeared to be timid

"No, no, stay with me."

He cried, rushing to her.

All his rationality was gone after seeing the woman he loved laying sprawled on the ground.

"Stay with me!"

None of them bothered to stop him, they watched the man tear off his clothes and apply it to her in an effort to stop the bleeding.

He tied the cloth around her, staining it in blood.

He checked her pulse.

She was dead.

He put an ear on her chest.

Her heat wasn’t beating, an organ that once beat was now gone.

He even checked her nose.

She wasn’t breathing.

She had kicked the bucket.

The man cried.

His tears dripped onto her dead body.

Surprisingly, no one moved to stop here, they just watched.

"So he knew."

Jason murmured to himself.

While he didn’t see when the woman peeked at them, Kira had seen it, and even allowed it.

He had allowed the events play out in this way to break the man’s will, so they could leave peacefully.

"Let’s go."

Kira said.

The man had already been given a lot of time to grieve.

But he didn’t move.

"Why?"

The mayor, already on his knees, opened his mouth to speak.

But only incomprehensible words came out of his mouth.

He raised his hand and channeled mana into it, manipulating the energy in his fingertips.

A large orange fireball formed, it floated a bit above his palm.

He finally stood up and used his free hand to wipe his face, blood was smeared all over his face.

Only Asahi seemed to be affected by the display, the boy had some tears flowing down his eyes.

The others were...

Parentless.

They wouldn’t understand the pain of losing a loved one.

The ball of fire hovered right above his hand.

Without a word, the man propelled it towards Kira.

’There’s something I don’t understand about this.’

Jason thought as he walked over to the boy, whom apparently made no effort to try dodging it.

’Out of all the awakeneds, she was the only one that died.’

He calmly watched the ball of fire approach him.

’Why is that?’

He wondered.

The fireball crackled and its size reduced.

’Why is it that the random possibility of the man’s wife dying came to be?’

He couldn’t help but question it, it just seemed too random.

The ball of flames crackled loudly, its size greatly diminished as it approached Jason.

’Is it fate?’

He outstretched his hand, as if he wanted to catch it.

’No, I don’t even believe in such a thing.’

It was small when it finally came in contact with his hand.

Then died out completely, without even leaving the slightest trace of a burn on him.

The man watched this.

The fireball he had created, pouring more than half of his mana into it was snuffed out so easily. The other party didn’t even seem to exert himself, not even in the slightest.

He felt defeated.

His wife dead.

The only thing he had to cling on to now was his son.

"Let’s go."

Kira said, walking past Jason and heading towards the man.

The man, his shoulder slumped, had no choice but to agree.

Together, all of them walked in silence to the veil.

The day darkened, giving way to night.

It would have been impossible for them to see in the dark, but Lyra lighted a small ember that illuminated the path for them.

One that even Jason wasn’t able to affect.

After some time spent walking, they reached the edge of the settlement. In front of them was the translucent veil, it prevented anyone from going out of the settlement.

"Can you open it?"

Kira asked.

The man was silent.

Then, his hands began moving.

His movements were slow, he was distracted. It was clear that he found it hard to concentrate.

Tears streamed down his eyes, they dampened the man’s cheeks.

Finally, a small hole in the barrier took shape. It slowly became bigger until it was big enough for everyone to pass through.

"We should go."

Asahi said.

He was the first to leave, with two large brown bag hoisted on his shoulders.

Lyra followed, carrying nothing.

Sean carried a large bag on his back, without a word or a glance at anyone, he walked through the hole in the veil.

It was only Kira and Jason left.

"Can I leave the clean-up to you?"

Kira asked.

He did not wait for a reply, his body blurred, replaced by an afterimage.

Even then it faded away.

He had ran away, he left the responsibility to Jason.

"What the hell?"

Jason couldn’t but say out loud.

He was the only one left in the settlement, from his current position he could see them running.

’They aren’t even waiting for me.’

They had just left, yet they were already escaping.

"What did he mean by clean-up?"

Jason scratched his chin, leaving a hand in his pockets as he calmly went out of the settlement.

His steps broke the silent of the night.

He took a single step out of the settlement.

Jason side-stepped, dodging the man before calmly walking out.

"You don’t even have a weapon."

He said as he backed away.

"But even then, from all the flimsy punches I’ve seen you thrown I can tell your a long-range type."

Jason said calmly, his eyes glued to the person in front of him.

The ember that she had summoned was gone. It was the light that hung in the sky that illuminated the night, with it Jason could see.

If only barely.

"Why do you want to risk your life?"

He questioned as the man moved back, trying to use magic.

But his attempts weren’t working.

"Or do you think I’m weak, that’s why you chose to attack me?"

He asked again as he watched the man’s futile attempts.

He was desperate, he tried running towards Jason, his fists cocked.

Only for his opponent to easily dodge his blows.

The mayor of the settlement wasn’t a physical fighter, he was the type that relied on using magic projectiles.

It was the types that relied magic in such a way that were easy for Jason.

Effortlessly, he dodged the man’s strike and punched him in the gut.

He hadn’t put his full power in that blow, but it was enough to cause the man to lurch forward, his hands on his abdomen before falling to the ground.

"You have a settlement to lead, you shouldn’t die."

Jason said, getting ready to run.

The man wasn’t in any condition to fight, and he didn’t want to kill him.

He was after something grander.

He struggled to stand up, but his efforts were in vain.

"Ju- just because its a small se-"

He struggled to get the words out.

"You’re right..."

Jason helped him complete the words.

"It’s just a small settlement."
