Chapter 139: It’s Just A Small Settlement (1)
The light of the day was almost gone.
Kira gave him the book he had clung to from their first meeting.
’This.’
Jason thought but took it regardless.
Though, it had a blank cover and the very first pages were blank as well.
But as he turned he found something, something that piqued his interest.
Name: Ken
Wanted: Betrayed the Civilians and sided with the clans.
Wanted Dead or Alive.
Reward: 3 months supply of water.
’Is this a bingo book?’
He couldn’t help but wonder.
On the very top of the page, before the information on the civilian named Ken, there was a rough sketch of him.
Jason turned through the yellow leaflets of the book.
Name: Aides Midas
Wanted: Hades clansmen
Wanted Dead.
Reward: 3 months supply of water.
’A bingo book for awakeneds.’
Now, he had seen everything.
The book was filled to the brim with sketches of awakeneds, their names and their rewards were stated in the books.
He turned the pages, his mind recorded the faces of every awakened he saw.
Finally, at the middle pages of the book he saw it.
Name: ??? Hachiman
Wanted: Responsible for the death of two settlement mayors.
Wanted Dead or alive.
Reward: Position As Squad Commander of a division in the Civilian army, Half a century’s worth of water.
On the book, there was a sketch of Kira.
It was a rough sketch so it didn’t have much details, but it was fairly accurate.
’So this guy is on a bingo book.’
It was impressive.
’And for such a high price.’
Half a century’s worth of water wasn’t a joke in this time.
And the position too...
Surprisingly, both Sean and Lyra didn’t have any bounty on them. It was clear that it was only Kira that was taking the blame.
Kira was only on the middle page, after him there were many big shots.
Name: Izanagi Kiernan
Wanted: Leader of Izanagi clan division.
Wanted alive.
Reward: Position as Commander of a division in the Civilian army. 6 decades worth of water.
And the rewards just kept getting more preposterous.
Jason had to hand the book back to Kira.
"Since you’ve seen the book you can already guess what we’re going to do."
The dangerous glint hadn’t left his hand one bit, instead it intensified ever slightly.
’So he was hiding the book because he didn’t want me to see it was a bingo book?’
Jason was a little confused, but he understood Kira’s intentions.
’Why is this guy acting a bit differently?’
Kira was mostly indifferent, now he was showing a bit more emotion.
’And Asahi should be acting differently, isn’t he also a civilian?’
Asahi’s ties with the civilians were confusing, while the boy was a civilian himself, he was tied to the people he journey with.
"Wouldn’t it just be better to leave?"
Jason couldn’t help but ask.
Killing three guards was one thing, but all his actions were in self-defense.
And if this town lost their mayor, the benefactor strengthening the veil would be gone.
"We’re low on supplies."
He explained.
Jason blinked in response, realizing that it was a solid argument.
He had told them his food supply had finished a while ago.
’That is actually a solid argument.’
He didn’t say anything after that.
His silence served as a agreement of sorts, it signified that he had agreed but didn’t want to say it out loud.
’Its my fault.’
But even after thinking that, it wasn’t really his fault.
His supply was actually running low after sharing it between five people daily, even if they only ate once a day.
From his supplies, Sean ate five times in one sitting, Asahi ate four, Kira ate two, Lyra only ate once, and Jason ate four with an occasional fifth time in a sitting.
It was clear that his food wouldn’t last longer if all of them ate it everyday, and they had abandoned the bags a while back.
"All of you should go ahead, Jason will stay with me while I explain the plan to him."
At Kira’s words, the rest left. Their forms flickered into mere afterimages before completely leaving, it was only Asahi who could be seen running.
"Follow me."
Kira said.
His form flickered, his body reappearing a good distance away.
Jason followed after him.
Unlike the rest, they weren’t running, instead they were walking leisurely.
"When I first met you, I asked you how long you were going to stay with us?"
"Yes."
"Have you decided?"
He questioned.
’Should I tell him the truth?’
Jason wondered.
’Or just delay it until a later date.’
"Until you’re done with what you want to do."
Jason answered, he had decided to tell the truth.
"I thought so."
Kira murmured to himself.
"Then you should be prepared to have a bounty on your head since you’re always with me, and you’re easily recognizable."
Kira already had a bounty on his head, if he and Asahi worked with him they would undoubtedly have a bounty on his head.
"I’m okay with that."
They walked leisurely, talking as they left the outskirts.
"Why do you want to kill the leader of the settlement?"
Jason couldn’t help but ask as they approached.
He squinted his eyes to see ahead of him as he walked.
"I don’t want to kill him."
Kira said before continuing.
"I just want to leave here and continue on my way."
He admitted.
"Did you see the bingo book?"
He asked.
Jason nodded as a reply.
"Its inaccurate. Very inaccurate.
After I finished the task the clan gave me and was on my way to report the success that was when the Civilian-clan war stated or the Warring states.
Because of my blue hair and eyes people can tell I’m a Hachiman, even though the clan isn’t that well known.
Throughout, I’ve gone through a lot of settlements, and among them a number around fifty participated in the civilian-clan war."
’Where is he going with this?’
Jason couldn’t help but wonder.
"I’ve killed something around 20 settlement leaders, or mayors, whatever you want to call them.
Some tried to trick me by allowing me to pass before trying to murder me, others were cooperative, while the rest were defiant before they died, on those ones I had to kidnap a guard and..."
He didn’t finish his words, as if the words that were about to come out of his mouth would elicit a kind of reaction from Jason.
"It depends on what this mayor chooses."
He finished choosing not to talk anymore.
"That’s understandable..."
They didn’t talk anymore after that and slowly approached their destination.
"We’re here."
Kira said quietly.
They stopped in a moderate sized building, it was painted completely white and was slightly bigger than the rest of them.
"This is his house."
Instead of doing something overly dramatic, Kira gestured for Jason to follow him and they went towards the door.
He knocked loudly.
’I thought we were breaking in.’
This was a major disappointment to him as he had expected something more flashy from someone that had killed 20 mayors.
After a minute of continuous knocking there was shuffling of feet behind the door.
"Who’s there?"
The voice belonged to a man, sounding like he had been awoken abruptly from sleep.
’How would an awakened sleep so soundly?’
Jason mused.
Even he that wasn’t an awakened would awaken at the slightest disturbance.
"Mayor, I’ve come to report the death of the guards."
Kira answered from behind.
The man behind the door began opening it, then he stopped.
"Another guard has already reported in, if that is all then go back."
"No, the people behind it have been found out and are planning something concerning you, sir."
’He isn’t lying.’
Jason couldn’t help but think.
Kira didn’t even bother lying, instead he only spoke facts.
They were planning something concerning him, in a way he was only reporting what was about to transpire.
The jingle of keys sounded.
The man opened the door.
He was short and had black hair that was balding.
He scrutinized both people behind the door slowly as he had just woken up.
Suddenly...
He wiped his eyes.
It all seemed too unrealistic to him.
"Blue hair, blue eyes..."
The man couldn’t help but mutter, he felt that his eyes were deceiving him.
Even going as far to think that it was a trick of the light.
Settlements involved in the Civilian-clan war were given bingo books, there were even many sold in the stalls in this place.
And they were regularly updated.
This man in front of him...
Was in the middle pages of the book!
He had a large bounty on his head, but the skill required to deal with him was something the mayor of this settlement didn’t have.
"You’re him!"
The man suddenly shouted, irrationality took over him.
He threw a fist forward, only for it to hit thin air.
Blood trickled down his nape.
"Don’t do anything, if you do you’ll die."
The scarlet red liquid stained the kunai and the man paused mid-motion, he didn’t even bother to withdraw his fist.
"D- don’t... Please leave."
The man murmured, his words incomprehensible.
"We’re not kidnapping you, we just need you to open the veil for our leave."
The man’s mind raced at Kira’s words.
He tried to comprehend what the boy meant by "we".
He finally saw it.
Kira wasn’t the only person that was there, some feet away there was another person.
The man immediately thought that he was his accomplice.
But there was something peculiar about him.
"He- he’s dark-skinned!"
