Chapter 137: Eyes Lost (2)
Chapter 137: Eyes Lost (2)
The process was long, unbearable even.
The worst part was he didn’t even know if he had begun, it took a lot out of him to stay rooted in one place.
Even if his eyes were being healed, he felt no changes whatsoever to his vision.
Jason couldn’t tell how much time passed – he was never good at keeping track of time in the first place. But even then, he could tell that a lot of time passed.
He laid there, in a foreign place, thinking about his life choices.
Hours drifted by slowly without any of both parties moving in the slightest.
"Get up."
She ordered.
Jason woke up from his mental daydream at her sudden words.
He sat up before getting up.
"Remove the cloth around your eyes."
His eyes had stopped bleeding a long time ago, along with the pain.
His hands went to his head and he fumbled with the cloth, working slowly to untie it.
When he held the cloth up for inspection, he noticed something about it.
"It’s dyed with my blood."
When looking at it first he made the assumption that it was a red cloth but now he noticed that it wasn’t supposed to be red, it was red because of his blood.
The realization hit him soon after.
"I can see!"
It came to him that he wasn’t supposed to be able to see this.
Jason couldn’t help but put a hand over an eyeball.
It acted on instance, closing as his own hand approached it. He felt it.
’Even it was healed.’
His eyes closed automatically seeing the guard rushing to him, even it had healed.
"Thank you."
Jason said.
’So she can heal anything.’
He was thankful to know that.
’There was never anything like this mentioned in TWODK though, body parts like eyeballs couldn’t be healed, they could only be transplanted from one human to another.’
When he lost his eyes a while ago, he was afraid that he would have to look for a dead body, or preferably have one of them kill someone then transfer their eyeballs.
If not, his vision would be dead.
"I did not heal you."
She said, as if reading his mind.
Instantly, he stopped admiring his eyes and turned his head towards her.
’What does she mean?’
She seemed to be taking pleasure as she paused mid-way.
"I only helped you regrow your eyes, your original eyes are gone and will never come back."
She explained.
Seeing his expression, she took it upon herself to explain.
"I burnt your old eyes, and then healed you before implanting a new pair using the remains of its essence."
Jason didn’t get it at all.
’Essence? Essence of a being?’
He wanted to ask that out loud but refrained from doing so.
"As a traveler, there are some times when you’ll use your eyes."
’Is she trying to sound inspirational?’
With those words, she left. He was left alone to deal with the realization.
[Name: Jason Hachiman
Age: 14
Physical – Early Stage 5
Mental – Late Stage 3
Mana - Stage 000 Early
Skills: Advanced War Tactics, Advanced Cooking, Null eyes, Spirit Steps, Delayed Fist, Terrible Cloning, War God’s Embrace, Blade Strike]
There was barely any difference with his status, the only noteworthy thing that changed was his mental stat that had gone up to Late Stage 3. That was good, considering that stat increases were nice.
He felt a wave of relief wash over him as he saw that the Null eyes was still among his talents.
’That’s a relief, I was worried about having to copy the Null eyes from Kira.’
It wasn’t the chance to touch Kira he was worried about.
When awakening the Null eyes there was the state where the eyes turned Null – completely void of anything, before it finally rested at the color, blue.
Jason took in a deep breath, drawing all the oxygen he could muster into his lungs.
He took a look at his surrounding; he was in a garden of sorts, except it seemed to have been devoid of people.
Before continuing he wanted to test his eyes to see if they were up to par.
After taking in the view, he turned his direction towards the road.
’There isn’t anytime to admire the view.’
He thought, noticing his eyes were normal.
Jason was restless.
After laying still for several hours he was restless.
As he got up, he picked up the red cloth as it had fallen from his hands earlier.
He looked at it briefly before tying it around his neck, but it was only after he did that he noticed his choice of clothing.
His clothes were not only covered in blood, but also in spilled guts, intestines and the likes.
First he pulled off the scarf and changed into a new pair of clothing.
’I wonder what she meant.’
Jason thought, tying the scarf around his new look.
Black.
On black.
On black.
With red on the neck.
’Does that mean that they’ve lost their eyes as well?’
He thought if she was referring to Kira or Sean, implying that they had lost their eyes before.
’Its possible.’
But when he thought about Asahi, he knew that someone like him couldn’t lose an eye. If he did he wouldn’t be having them right now.
He walked in a random direction.
As Jason entered the street, he noticed something.
The people were giving him looks – but not just strange looks, but also looks of pure malice.
They were looking down on him. Unlike the last settlement that showed him looks of pity, this one only showed his pure malice.
People looked down on him. But he remained oblivious to their gazes, instead of minding them he chose to feel the area around his eyes.
’They must be hostile because they have never seen someone like me before, or maybe they are just like this because they want to hate me?’
He thought as he turned to an alleyway.
His belief was that since the guards at the entrance to the settlement had died, people would be looking for new faces.
Not only was he a new face, but he was prone to standing out, even in a crowd.
The alleyway was surprisingly clean, sporting no trash on its ground, most of it was kept in the dumpster.
He ran his fingers along the wall as he walked.
"Where are you going?"
Jason turned his head, tilting his head to face the person that he had just met.
He had average looks, but there was no mistaking that this person was a supposed thug.
"Why the hell are you looking at me like that? You freak!"
The person was unnerved by Jason’s cold stare, like he was staring at a higher being.
"You trash, you’re going to-"
"Wait."
Jason finally turned his body fully to face the person he was talking to.
"Don’t you have a life?"
He asked.
"Why just stop a random person in the middle of an alley to rob him? Do I look like I carry water on me?"
He questioned again.
"You little dark-skinned bastard, do you know who you’re talking, a rank 5 awakened!"
He boasted.
’The hell, this seems cliché.’
Someone stopping him an alleyway seemed like something that had happened too many times.
"Or is it just because you have special eyes that you think you can talk back to me? Do you think I don’t know that you’re from a clan!"
Jason stopped the words that were about to come out from his mouth and continued in another direction.
"Do I look like I’m from a clan to you?"
He asked, trying to play dumb.
"Don’t play dumb with me! You’re eyes give you away, or do you think a regular civilian would have such eyes?
I’m sure your clan threw you away in this place because you’re dark-skinned and now you’re stuck here."
’So that is the reason they were looking at me like that.
The contemptuous stares.
"Do you think that just because regular civilians don’t know that clans have special eyes that awakeneds wouldn’t know?!
Now listen up, you."
He was getting irritated with talking to Jason.
’So they were staring at me just because they hated my skin color.’
He made sure to note that.
"Open up the dumpster, I’m sure you’ll see a surprise you’ll definitely like."
The awakened grinned maliciously.
’Why not?’
The guy in front of him boasted of being a rank 5 awakened, whatever he had in store wouldn’t be enough to even scratch him.
He grabbed the handle and opened it.
It was empty...
Save, for a corpse.
"Do you like what you see?"
He asked, his voice excited.
Jason stared blankly at the corpse in the dumpster.
If it was a normal corpse he wouldn’t have no qualms with it.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t. The dead body was black.
Not charred from a fire, but black as in its regular skin color.
And it didn’t reek, indicating that the person had been recently killed.
Slowly, Jason closed the dumpster and proceeded to stare blankly at the man who claimed to be an awakened.
"You’re hurt! Aren’t you?!"
He was definitely excited now.
He mistook Jason’s blank expression as him trying to hide his true feelings after seeing the surprise.
"You’re not a random thug, you’re an awakened. You decided to kill me and then add me to that corpse over there.
Normally, I would wait for you to make the first attack so it would be classified as self-defense in my book. However...
I’m sure that guy did nothing to you but you decided to kill him anyway, so consider this as revenge."
His ring glowed.
"What the hell are you talking about? You’re going to die like him, trust me!"
In a second, a dagger was plunged in his throat.
