Chapter 135: Leaving The Forest

Chapter 135: Leaving The Forest

...

The forest was bathed in the blue blood of the Frost Maggots, along with several scattered pieces of their corpses.

Even though he had tried to avoid it, in the end it proved unavoidable as he, Asahi and Jason were covered in the blood of the monsters.

Kira dropped both of them on the ground as he landed, and without wasting anytime ran to the opposite direction.

"The pain is gone."

Jason murmured to himself as he got up.

He stretched his limbs, ignoring the blue blood that had stained his attire.

"And the maggots too."

He mused.

’His report was wrong on the maggots, they don’t need to jump since they can just fly.’

The trees were no longer recognizable, stained with the pieces of the corpses of the maggots as well as the blood.

He could tell that all of them had been taken out, and not a single one remained in the forest.

’If she could do that from the beginning then why did she make us suffer like that.’

He couldn’t but wonder, ignoring that even the ground wasn’t spared.

’What kind of person does Kira tag along with? How was his brother even taken by the maggots?’

So many thoughts.

In the end he could only ponder, he couldn’t find the answer to his numerous questions.

He extended his hand, helping Asahi onto his feet.

"What just happened?"

He questioned, finding it hard to believe the sight in front of him.

"I don’t know..."

Jason answered.

"I really don’t know..."

...

Due to the problem of lack of food, they had to make do with Jason’s food.

And when Kira asked him about the strange ring on his finger, Jason’s response was.

"I have my secrets."

He was reinstating what Kira had told him.

And from then on, he wasn’t pried any further.

But even then, he had to give Sean more food as the boy was lacking in the flesh department.

Jason’s greatest worry was now that his food and water supply would finish before a month would go by.

The rest of the journey through the forest was uneventful as the Frost Maggots had been eradicated; every single one of them was destroyed, because of that they spent a bit more time on resting.

It increased the overall time they spent in the forest to two weeks, but it was worth it.

The journey was rather boring and Jason spent most of his time trying to absorb nature energy to boost his growth, like he had done in the earlier settlement, except this time he tried to do it while running and leaping.

It was a good challenge that helped to boost his growth and improve his mastery over nature energy.

And even though his physical and mental stat didn’t increase he wasn’t disheartened.

...

"Fourteen days."

Kira murmured as he ran.

Jason turned to his direction, his face displaying some shock.

’He was counting that.’

He was someone who didn’t even know his birthday, he couldn’t be expected to remember dates or even the flow of time.

Near-perfect memory wouldn’t help with his problem as he never bothered to even think about time.

"If possible, we should be able to get a reward for killing all the maggots in the forest."

Kira, Asahi and Jason ran side-by-side while Lyra and Sean were ahead.

"How much can you expect from a settlement?"

Jason asked.

"A few necessities for travel."

The answer was quick.

With the world overtaken by various monsters, half of the world being infested with such monsters, even the civilians and the clans were having a dispute.

"There’s also a blacksmith in that settlement, in exchange for water we could buy new weapons."

Kira added.

"What about armor?"

Asahi interjected.

"You already have armor."

His proposal was dismissed quickly.

"Even if its bad you’ll have to manage it, or at worst wear clothes over it."

He added.

"I’ll just sell some water."

As they talked, Jason could only watch them.

In human settlements, it was awakeneds who dealt with the sale of water due to the fact that everyone could use each type of magic.

If they were to come in a town and begin to sell water for much loser gains than other awakeneds, they would manage to incur more profits than the awakeneds of that town.

Even if the other awakeneds were to argue, they could quickly be silenced. They were only civilians, and these two were both rank 0’s.

One was from the Hachiman clan and awakened the null eyes, while the other was the first civilian rank 0 awakened who also happened to be talented in every known type of magic.

He could even synthesize both forms of magic and release them, calling it release.

Jason could only watch them scheming as he couldn’t use magic.

The water he had given the inn owner was given to him by Kira for sale, along with all the water he sold in the town.

While these two talked about selling water, Jason already knew that he would be the one handling the sales.

’At least I’ll be able to buy myself a new katana.’

Preferably one with greater durability and a sharper one.

"We’ll soon be leaving."

Kira said, breaking from the group and dashing forward to regroup with his brother.

They moved out of the dense trees, first was Kira, Sean whom had managed to regain a bit of his flesh and Lyra.

Jason and Asahi followed behind them.

As they left the trees, he noticed something different.

’Heat.’

"Its hot."

He spoke out loud.

The sun which barely did anything back when he was in the forest was now acting up.

Its heat rays were enough to make him sweat.

’The weather changed in an instant.’

He ran back into the forest.

Even from outside he could see that the snow was still on the ground, and when he entered the forest it was cold.

However, as soon as he came out the weather suddenly became hot.

’That’s not normal.’

Jason thought.

He went back to regroup with them.

’There must be something wrong with the weather.’

He mused.

Perhaps different parts of the world had different settings of weather conditions.

"Is there something wrong?"

The person who had asked the question was Lyra.

"No."

He replied, instead choosing to focus on the path in front of him.

Jason couldn’t see any monsters in the vicinity and as he walked he failed to notice the giant worms that sprouted out of the ground.

"Aren’t there any monsters here?"

Jason asked.

"No, this part should be relatively clear of any monsters because of the threats of the Frost Maggots."

Even rank 1 monsters would fear over a thousand Frost Maggots, it was understandable that they would leave.

"But the settlement is close to the forest."

The group moved in the direction of the settlement, led by Kira.

’Due to the weather, this settlement should be even worse than the former one.’

Jason could only regret not bringing something like a nose-mask when he decided to enter the A-dungeon.

If he had known about human settlements before, he would have been prepared.

Every settlement was covered with a translucent veil that protected it from monsters, this one was no different.

Only the guards were able to lift a very small portion of the veil to allow visitors.

"Are you humans?"

The guard at the entrance asked as she saw the people approaching.

"Yes."

Was the reply.

Her eyes went to each one of them, as if she was scrutinizing them cleanly.

Then suddenly, her eyes widened in shock.

"Are you three from a clan?"

She asked, as if recognizing them.

Kira grew wary, but nevertheless he still answered.

"Yes."

Suddenly, the woman opened a portion of the veil, big enough for all of them to pass through.

"Come in."

She walked to the side to allow their smooth entrance.

Kira didn’t move, neither did anyone else except Jason.

’She recognizes that their from a clan because of the hair color.’

He thought.

Blue eyes and blue hair, and red eyes and blue hair.

A normal civilian couldn’t have blue eyes and blue hair, neither could one have red eyes and blue hair.

The only assumption left was that they were from a clan.

’Is it because they are from a clan that she allowed us easily?’

Jason couldn’t help but wonder as he stepped into the translucent veil, officially entering the territory of the settlement.

’But then again, it wasn’t as easy as this at the last settlement.’

He felt that entering here was easy, far too easy.

’Something isn’t right...’

’There are more people here.’

He jumped backwards evading the two swordsmen that were descending from the sky with the intent to kill him.

’I knew it.’

He thought.

They tried to use wind magic to quickly follow with an attack, but they found it strange that they couldn’t.

Two hand grabbed both heads firmly.

And without a second thought, drove them the back of their skull into the ground.

’I knew that there were other people here.’

Jason turned towards the others still outside the translucent barrier.

’Now wonder they didn’t move.’

’They knew this was a trap.’

All except him.

He turned his head towards the guard who had invited them into the veil.

The woman suddenly moved towards him. Her speed was quite slow, considering that she was a guard.

Suddenly, her speed increased.

’A skill?’

That was the only thing Jason could think of as he attempted to raise a hand to stop her.

But he was a split-second late with his movements. He had underestimated her due to her earlier speed.

Blood dripped onto the ground.

A pair of daggers had gone through his eyes.
