Chapter 131: Monkey (1)

... Jason’s perspective

The buzzing finally stopped as all the maggots had left.

A while later, someone came out from his hiding place.

This person was Jason.

’They’re really gone.’

He thought.

His sharp eyes scanned the surrounding, but even then he was unable to see any of the easily distinguishable monsters.

He even went down from the tree and onto the ground, his feet landing on the snow.

But even then, he couldn’t find the maggots.

Every single one of them had left.

’That’s a relief.’

It could be a good thing, or it could be a relatively bad thing.

Jason jumped onto the lowest branch of a tree and he went towards Asahi’s direction.

The boy seemed just as perplexed as he was, but with his normal eyes he could not see as far as Jason could.

"Are you alright?"

Jason asked.

"I’m fine..."

The words came out absentmindedly, he was focused on another thing.

The word’s trailed on far more longer than they were supposed to.

"He’s saying we should come over."

Asahi finally said still facing Kira’s direction.

Then without another world, he suddenly leaped to the next tree.

Jason looked over.

’Where is Sean?’

He noticed Kira and Lyra.

But his eyes failed to find Sean, it was like the boy wasn’t here anymore.

He quickly followed after Asahi.

As he landed on the large branch on which Kira stood on, he realized something.

It was fairly obvious from the expression which Kira showed, one that Jason had not seen on him.

He had seen the boy happy, annoyed and sad.

But never depressed or worried.

These new two expressions were etched onto his face.

’They must have took him.’

He refrained from speaking his thoughts out loud as he knew his guess was true.

Sean wasn’t even rank 2, yet he was in such a place; a forest infested by hundreds of insect monsters.

"They took him."

Kira finally said, his voice breaking away the tension that had formed.

"Let’s go after him."

Asahi said quickly.

His words came out not as soon as Kira had spoke, it was as if he was waiting for him to speak.

"I want to go after him, both of you, I need your help."

He was basically pleading.

’I’m sure she has enough power to do this by herself.’

He thought, thinking about Lyra.

She obviously had enough power to stop Sean, probably even save him from getting captured.

"...L"

He opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out except a single sound that was off-point.

He had glanced at her.

And the expression on her face, it even made his devilish grins pale in comparison.

"Of course."

He pretended to remain composed.

"Thank you."

Kira said gratefully.

"We should start moving now, if we aren’t quick the maggots could..."

He didn’t complete the words and instead leaped to the next branch.

"Jason, don’t bother staying behind us."

Lyra quickly followed behind him, her speed was unreal; it made no sense for her to move this fast considering she was airborne, and she caught up to Kira before moving at a steady pace.

"We should move."

Asahi awoke from his shock and nodded.

They followed after both of them, moving at a steady pace.

But Kira just seemed to move even faster, putting more force into each of his leaps, to the point where the branch he leaped from broke off from the tree, crashing into the ground.

Both Asahi and Jason increased their pace.

If it was before he had started the whole ordeal of avoiding maggots, he wouldn’t be this good at jumping.

But now, he had been leaping for hours on end without rest, even forcing himself to do complex maneuvers to avoid their detection.

"He’s going to be reckless, it’ll be good for both of us if we save him from himself."

Jason said.

"I know. He’s different from how he was when I met him."

Asahi replied.

Their first meeting was a head-on confrontation, and when Kira lost his arm he didn’t even flinch. The teen was one of the reasons he was defeated as he had thrown him to Jason’s clone.

Now, the same person, because of his brother wasn’t acting rationally.

With every leap he made, a branch broke off from the tree.

And the worst part was the person next to him seemed oblivious to his actions and moved with him at the same speed.

"Its because it’s his brother that was taken."

Jason explained.

Asahi nodded, his face forming a complex expression.

"I would probably act the same way if I was in his place, after all I know how important family is..."

Jason understood what he said.

The same person had told him how he lost his family when he was still a little child, how his sister awakened and went to her doom. How he himself joined his family to die together.

Only to be saved by some god.

Like a protagonist whom required a tragic backstory and an average heritage.

Because of Kira’s movements, they were forced to take a different path.

As they landed on the next tree he patted Asahi sympathetically on the back.

Jason knew of no other way to show that he understood Asahi’s pain.

Then he sped up, his movements becoming quicker as he landed and jumped repeatedly.

He propelled himself, using whatever was in his sight to boost his speed.

’My movements are starting to get familiar.’

He thought as he grabbed onto a branch untop of him, swinging himself forward.

He tried to recall what moved the same way he did.

’Its an animal.’

Not a monster, but an animal.

It was from his past life.

Without warning, his expression turned sour.

His movements reminded him of a monkey.

’That’s being racist to myself.’

He thought, his mood ruined.

It was bad enough with her stare, but now that he was behaving like a monkey...

’Isn’t that self-racism?’

He thought again.

Jason tried to shake the thought away, but it clung to his mind refusing to leave.

To distract himself, he bit his lips.

The pain served as a momentary distraction as he had managed to draw blood.

’I wonder how strong the monster’s bite is.’

He had no doubt that they were able to pierce through Sean’s skin, from their very pitiful stats they were only rank 4 monsters because of their bite and their tendency to flock in groups.

’Would it be able to pierce my skin?’

He doubted it.

Before he only trained remotely, constantly using image training and striking at the air.

Now he was jumping from tree-to-tree without rest and facing opponents who were his match.

It was different from outside the dungeon, where he was the strongest in his age group.

In this time, he had already met two people with strength that was the same as his!

Jason refocused on the path ahead on him.

Because the maggots were gone, he no longer had any need to remain stealthy and keep his mind focused.

Fatigue began to creep him, it was formed by the countless hours he had spent leaping.

He knew that he was soon approaching his limits, if he was on the ground he would have already fallen from exhaustion, it was only because leaping didn’t require his constant movement.

’My clones should be arriving shortly.’

He slowed down his pace, resorting to leaping instead of the wild movements he did.

Asahi passed by him, his movements quick as he leaped from tree to tree efficiently.

Even without mana.

He pushed himself forward, trees blurring as he passed by them with each leap.

He was once again swallowed by his thoughts as he leaped.

"There!"

Kira’s voice woke him out of his daydreaming.

Buzzing.

The buzzing that was gone now returned.

The sound the Frost Maggots made when they were mid-air.

He focused.

Jason could see the monsters.

There were hundreds, if not up to a thousand gathered in one spot. The buzzing seemed to be at its peak as they moved closer.

Kira moved even faster than before.

"He’s there."

Jason murmured to himself.

With his eyes he could barely make out a human being, but he was certain that was the person he was looking for.

His ears picked up on the sound of yet another branch falling off.

"Those clones."

Where his clones this slow?!

He did not pick up the pace like everyone else, instead he continued with the same rhythm.

’All the maggots are gathered around there.’

He thought.

’There has to be a reason.’

He jumped yet again, but this time he did not aim for a branch, instead he leaped over the trees and perched himself at the top.

Now he could see the maggots clearly.

They were far more than his estimations of hundreds.

’They’re over a thousand.’

He realized, marveling at the sight in front of him.

Jason shook his head, forcing it to focus.

’There should be a reason, maybe a practice they perform daily.’

That didn’t make any sense to him and he had to quickly let go of the thoughts.

Such mindless creatures wouldn’t be able to form a routine.

’There has to be something calling them to this place, and they just managed to find Sean.’

He focused on their gathering.

His eyes checked for the largest of the maggots.

Name: None

Age: 1

Physical – Early Stage 2

Mental – Early Stage 2

Mana – Late Stage 1

Skills: Frost Bite]

Not only was it the oldest, but it possessed stats far greater than he had seen in all the other maggots he had checked.

’I’ve found it.’
