Chapter 130: Evading The Frost Maggots (3)

Hours rolled by as they moved.

Asahi, as well as Jason’s movements were becoming less refined and more sluggish as they continued the monotonous routine of jumping from tree to tree while making sure their movements were as quiet yet quick as possible.

He had initially thought that it wasn’t as impossible as Kira made it out to be.

But now...

Jason leaped from an unoccupied tree.

There was a moment of weightlessness as he was airborne, he twisted his body.

His hand grabbed the tree’s side, even though it was much bigger than his hand, he was still able to use it to support himself.

He used it to propel himself forward, completely ignoring the branches of that tree.

Jason spun sideways mid-air.

His hands latched on to another tree as he boosted himself forward.

Finally, he landed on the branch of a tree, stopping his constant movements.

’They’re none here...’

He thought, crouching.

But now, after he realized that it was even much harder than he had initially expected.

The maggots weren’t just on the ground, they were also on the trees and in the sky. They were everywhere.

To avoid detection from the ones on the trees, he needed to make many maneuvers until he finally reached a tree without any maggots.

It was hard for him to do, considering that he had never practiced gymnastics before, and even doing one of this kind of intensity under pressure.

Thankfully, the ones that were airborne were taken out by Asahi.

But that being said, it wasn’t easy to avoid.

Asahi, whom was in front of him, threw one of the strange daggers strapped around his waist.

It went through the Frost Maggot, killing it quietly.

The boy jumped.

He flipped in the air, extracting the body from the Frost Maggot before it fell down and hitting its body its body right.

He performed a quick maneuver mid-air, and performed a quick spin.

He concentrated wind magic.

Another step.

He didn’t make contact with the ground, he concentrated wind magic at his soles.

He went in-between the branch, going through the unsuspecting maggots easily.

The corpse of that maggot fell to the ground as well, making a thud as it made contact with another maggot.

The monsters swarmed towards it.

As monsters without basic intelligence, they wouldn’t be able to notice something that happened so many times; about 10 maggots had died just from Asahi’s side, yet the monsters had not noticed the pattern.

There was no hint of intelligence in them, just instinct guiding their every move.

Asahi used the opportunity to leap from branch to branch.

Jason too, used the chance he had to leap without fear of getting caught by the maggots.

’3.’

He counted down in his mind as he landed on yet another tree.

’7.’

He thought as he leaped.

’10.’

He finished.

He quickly hid himself.

The countdown was the time the maggots took to finish eating their fellow Frost maggot, as soon as they were done, they would return.

Jason had made sure to time their movements.

As the Frost maggots resettled on their posts, he jumped again, using his strange maneuvers.

He had been jumping for hours without rest.

He crouched low again as Asahi killed another Frost Maggot, kicking it into the distance.

Once again, the maggots were attracted to the noise.

Except one...

[Name: None

Age: 0

Physical – Early Stage 1

Mental – Early Stage 1

Mana – Early Stage 1

Skills: Frost Bite]

There was nothing special about this Frost Maggot, its reaction time was just slow compared to the others and it managed to catch Asahi’s figure.

Its instincts directed it towards the source of food that was closer to it, inevitably drawing it to the boy.

A weapon sliced silently through the air.

A sharp dagger went through the monster, killing it instantly.

Asahi turned his head, catching sight of the Frost Maggot. He quickly retrieved the weapon and threw it back.

Jason caught it easily.

’There’s blood on it.’

He swiped the weapon at the air, ridding his dagger of the blue monster blood.

’It’s hard moving like this.’

He thought.

Their journey through the trees continued as they darted smoothly, making use of the trees and the foliage to hide themselves.

They had moving for hours, doing their best to avoid the monsters.

The fatigue caught up to him, slowly but surely.

’How much longer will my clones last.’

He was able to tell if his clones were destroyed or not, but right now they were still alive.

He landed on another tree, this one was devoid of maggots.

Jason paused, crouching low to avoid falling in the monster’s line of sight.

But that wasn’t the only reason.

There was an unmistakable sound in the air, one that he easily recognized due to the number to the times he had heard it in the last few hours.

Buzzing.

The buzzing that the monsters made when they took flight.

Before, it was manageable to the ear, now it was unbearable.

It was loud, completely drowning out any other noise that could be made.

It was as if a thousand of them were moving at once.

Jason quickly hid in the dense shrubbery of the trees.

The maggots were moving, hundreds of them at the same time.

He didn’t know if it was because they had been found out, or if this was one of the creature’s patterns. But nevertheless, he hid silently in the tree.

If worst came and he was found out, he could always make a quick break for the exit of the forest on ground.

The buzzing sounded close to him, the sound of the Frost Maggots sounding like a chaotic chorus.

But they passed by him, as if they couldn’t even identify his presence. It was clear that the cause of their sudden movements wasn’t him.

He didn’t dare to look outside.

...

Sean leaped from tree to tree, performing various maneuvers that were impossible for both rank 4 and rank 3.

That was with the help of her mana.

It boosted his abilities by leaps and bounds, allowing him to do various things that were impossible for someone of his rank.

He twisted mid-air, avoiding yet another maggot.

"We’ll soon have to stop to rest, but first we need to find a suitable spot for hiding."

He told his brother quietly.

The boy nodded, choosing to focus on leaping from tree to tree.

Unlike Asahi and Jason, he did not have to make complex maneuvers.

The Frost Maggots couldn’t even detect his presence in the first place, as long as he made no sound.

It was the same for Kira as well.

Jason and Asahi struggled.

Suddenly, the sounds from the maggots increased.

The ones flying above them, the ones on the ground, the ones on the trees. All of them instantly reacted, they sprouted their transparent wings and flew.

"Wait here."

His brother commanded, his voice quiet yet sharp.

He wasn’t going to play with his brother’s life in a place like this, he cared too much for the boy to do so.

If they waited and not made a single movement nor noise, the monsters wouldn’t be able to locate them.

Sean nodded quickly, but even then he continued moving.

Jumping from tree to tree without rest, even using the opportunity that had arisen so he could move more freely.

The sounds of the buzzing intensified.

Sean decided to stop, but even then he leaped a final time, resolving to crouch low after his final leap.

He missed.

If it was before, he would have been able to quickly get back on his feet using her mana.

But now, it was gone.

"Help!"

Someone of his rank wasn’t normally even able to jump from tree-to-tree.

Surprisingly, he saw that no one came to save him as he fell. Not even the brother that always caught him whenever he fell from trees.

Situations like these...

’Why?’

He thought grimly, understanding the situation perfectly.

The maggots were attracted to his voice, a few dozen broke off from their group.

Before he could take out his weapons, the monster swarming towards him arrived.

They caught him, biting into him several times.

He let out an agonizing cry as they bit into him.

They were classified as rank 4 monsters, not because of their strength or their stats, but because of their bite.

Their bite could easily go through the skin of a rank 4, even rank 3’s.

Even though he screamed, nobody moved to help him.

The only sounds were that came were his and the noise from the Frost Maggots.

He tried to fight back, but he noticed that his movements had become slower. Much slower.

’Frost Bite.’

He thought.

Even his thought process was slowed down.

The maggots took a hold of him, swarming around him as they took him away.

He couldn’t do anything as he had been slowed down, doing anything would just be redundant in this situation.

The monsters flew over the trees, the ones that carried the boy seemed to have formed their own group. Even though they feasted on him, they still traveled alongside the rest of the Frost Maggots.

The effects of Frost Bite came into play, and even the pain he felt from the bites was numbed down and even took longer before he registered it.

He knew the reason why Kira hadn’t come to save him and he knew the reason why her mana felt him after he tripped.

He only had a single thought.

’She must have a reason.’

He didn’t focus on the numbed down pain.

He trusted her.
