Chapter 124: First Civilian Rank 0

...

Jason watched over a figure on the ground.

They were back in the human settlement; and with Sean still in the dungeon and Kira missing an arm, though he said he would soon get it healed, Jason was left with the responsibility of watching over their capture.

Even if Sean was done with the dungeon, Jason would still he tasked with the responsibility of watching over him.

"He’s not waking anytime soon."

He muttered to himself.

"Should I break more of his bones? No, I think I’ve already broken enough."

After the figure had been knocked unconscious Jason took it upon himself to break a few of his bones, so even if he attacked him when he woke up he would be at a disadvantage.

He had even gone as far as to sell some water so he could buy some rope.

"If I break more of his bones I might disfigure him... I could even forget the reason why I suggested that we shouldn’t kill him and might just do it."

He joked to himself, but he did not laugh.

He had taken lives before, there was nothing stopping him from killing this guy...

Except one thing.

"Still, he doesn’t look like the person he was described as in the history books, maybe its because he’s younger than he was when the sketch was taken?"

The person in the history books didn’t have long black hair, and was bald. But he did indeed wear the same type of clothing that the figure, Asahi, wore.

Back when they were fighting, he noticed a slight similarity between the person now and the person in the history books.

And even their names were the same.

Now, he could see the similarities more closely.

"If I’m right on my guess, I defeated the world’s first civilian rank 0. I could put that achievement under my belt."

This time he laughed.

The person lying unconscious was none other than Asahi, the first civilian to awaken as a rank 0.

Because he was the first of the monumental achievement, his name had found its way to the history books of the world.

Jason did not know him from reading the novel, he knew this person from the lessons of his color-blind teacher.

He had actually studied it during his lessons, finding it more interesting than studying in his old life.

But now, he noticed there were somethings that were not mentioned in it, and he couldn’t help but wonder...

"But they never did mention anything about him being racist."

He chuckled dryly.

Who was he kidding? Almost everyone he had met was a racist.

The figure on the ground began to stir.

’Surprisingly, he didn’t bother pretending to still be asleep.’

"Wake up."

Jason said.

The figure stirred even more, turning and turning before his head finally jerked up.

He looked around confused, finding himself in a small room and on the ground.

Slowly, he turned his head to the side, and he saw it.

The person that had defeated him.

"I knocked you unconscious and took you here."

The figure’s eyes widened at his word, a mixture of confusion and wariness etched on his face.

He tried to get up, wincing in pain as he did so.

A foot stopped all his progress, pushing him back onto the hard ground.

’The wound’s already dried.’

The wound he had given the figure with his dagger.

"You might feel a little pain, I broke a few of your bones during our fight, smashed your head with the knee of my body double, grabbed you and drove your head into the ground, and also broke some of your bones after our fight."

He stated everything he had done, not bothering to hide anything out.

"What do you want, dark-skinned?"

His tone was dark, a sharp contrast to his playful tone during their fight.

"I have a question."

Jason ignored his words.

"Why don’t you go right to the point and call me that word? Or do you call your normal opponents white-skinned corrupted humans?"

He tried to sound playful but failed at it.

The figure didn’t respond.

"Now, as I was trying to tell you during our fight, I’m not a corrupted human."

He was trying to make this situation as grim as possible, even going as far as to press his foot down on the figure so he would have a hard time using mana.

Jason adjusted his chair and tightened his grip on the storage ring.

"Drink this."

Asahi’s face tightened, dread coming over him.

"Don’t think you can make me!"

He struggled to break free from the ropes that tied him down to the ground, but his efforts were futile as he was lacking in both strength and mana at the moment.

He couldn’t even break free from the rope, how would he make Jason get off him?

"Don’t worry, it will help you."

With those words, he grabbed Asahi’s face and pried his mouth.

The boy closed his teeth in an effort to resist, but the liquid still managed to get past it.

"If you don’t drink this, I will kill you."

Jason warned, his tone cold.

’Why is it this hard to make someone drink something good for them?’

Asahi’s resistance proved futile as all Jason had to do was lightly jab his balls, and he was forced to comply.

As the last of the bottle’s contents were drained, Jason kept the bottle at a corner.

"I told you before that you don’t have to worry, it won’t you turn you into a corrupted human or anything."

Jason put his foot off the boy and proceeded to untie the nods that bind the figure’s hands.

"If you’re perceptive, you’ll notice that all the wounds on your body are closing."

He got off the chair and walked to the edge of the room.

Immediately, Asahi sprang up.

He had begun to notice that the wounds he had acquired, both old ones and new were getting healed.

His body that had been stiffened from his countless fights with corrupted humans was finally beginning to become free.

He couldn’t imagine the kind of magic Jason had done on him, and he knew that people like him weren’t even supposed to be able to use magic.

"Thank you?"

He was confused, the person he had tried to kill because of his suspicion of him being a corrupted human was now helping him, and he didn’t even notice the presence of foreign mana in his body.

"Don’t mention it."

’It wasn’t free.’

He would have said it out loud but refrained from saying it.

He was just making Asahi grateful to him, so he would help him with favors later on.

"As I said, I’m not a corrupted human, my name is Jason."

"Asahi?"

He was still confused, it was evident on his face and in his words. He didn’t understand his current situation well enough to be comfortable.

"Why are you helping me?"

He finally questioned.

His posture made it clear that he was getting ready to burst through the wall and make his escape.

’Does he not know that his mana reserves weren’t restored with his health?’

"Because you’re a human being, I make sure to help every human being I can find, even if they’re racist."

His answer wasn’t genuine.

"Why?"

’Why does this guy think he’s the one in control, I’m the one that is supposed to be asking the questions?’

But he still played along, he had already set his act.

"Because we’re all the same."

He was spewing lies.

Jason wasn’t the kind to help, rather, he was the kind that acted in self-defense.

Even though he had killed people before, all of them were in acts of self-defense.

And they weren’t all the same; the laws of humans didn’t go that way, one person was always better than the other.

But it was best to seem like he was a kind person to fool the person in front of him.

Asahi seemed to believe him.

"If you’re not a corrupted human, how were you able to survive in the wilderness and even defeat me?"

It was natural for him to ask this question as dark-skinned people had no mana and should be easily susceptible to harsh cold.

Not only did Jason survive under it, but was able to beat someone who had mana, even if it was with the assistance of someone else.

However, he had not anticipated this question.

"...I’m from the Hachiman clan."

He was unsure of what to say and just went for that answer.

The suspicion that he thought Asahi would gain from his answer did not appear, instead his confusion returned.

"If you’re from a clan, shouldn’t your name by Jason Hachiman?"

He questioned, doubt beginning to grow in him.

Jason’s face morphed into confusion.

"Have you heard of me?"

"Are you famous?"

’That should mean no.’

’How would he know of me if I’m not supposed to be here?’

"Members of clans have a last name."

"Yes, my name is Jason Hachiman."

He said quickly.

’What does he mean that as a member of a clan, I have a last name?’

’Wasn’t the name of the first rank 0 civilian Asahi Ster?’

He thought, confused.

Jason had never seen anything that stated that only members of the clans had a last name.

His confusion grew, and he did his best to hide it.

His doubt for the history books he had read began to grow.

Something told him that there was something wrong with the history books he had read.
