Chapter 115: Human Settlement (2)

Jumping from tree to tree wasn’t as easy as Jason thought it would be. Sometimes he miscalculated the distance between trees and landed on the ground.

He had tried running on the ground, but that didn’t last long.

When running on the ground he realized that there were multiple large worm monsters burrowed in the snow.

As soon as they felt vibrations underneath the ground they sprang up, swallowing their victim whole.

Jason had dodged when it happened and resolved to stay on the trees.

’Are they increasing their speed?’

His brows furrowed.

Kira’s figure slowly became smaller before it disappeared completely.

Even his eyes couldn’t see him.

Then, as he blinked, she disappeared as well.

Gone.

’What are they doing?’

The only one left was Sean, the boy moved at the normal pace.

His body moved seamlessly from branch to branch. It seemed effortless to him, like a path he had memorized.

Jason increased his speed, only to miss the trees he was jumping to more often.

Eventually he managed to catch up with Sean.

The boy spared him a mocking look as he caught up.

"Are you targeting the next tree, or is it the ground?" He asked smugly before leaping to the next tree.

Jason leaped after him, only to land on the ground.

As soon as he landed, he jumped into the air.

A massive purple worm came out of the ground.

Half of its body was still underground, but even then, it was still as tall as one meter.

Its mouth snapped shut and its body went back into the snow.

Jason landed on the branch of the next tree.

’Another close encounter.’

Sean was standing next to him and holding back his laughter.

Instead, he had a large smirk on his face.

He was clearly enjoying Jason’s failure.

"Wh..."

His voice trailed off as he Sean leaped onto the next tree.

Without a word, Jason followed after him.

They both landed on the next tree.

"Where did Kira go?" Jason questioned.

Sean spared him a glance.

The boy was still glad about his failures.

"They went ahead to scout because you were because you were too slow."

His words and tone were accusing.

"We should have been able to make it in half a day, but he knew that you would be horrible at this so he estimated a day and a half without rest."

Sean explained.

His joy would have been infectious if his companion was not Jason.

’His deduction was spot-on.’

Jason did not know how to jump from tree to tree.

But he could learn, and increase their current speed.

He stood still, observing Sean as the boy leaped.

The blue haired boy with scarlet red eyes landed gracefully on the branch of the next tree.

Jason tried to imitate his movements.

He launched himself into the air, time seemed to stretch on.

For a brief second, he felt weightless, suspended within the two very tall trees.

Then, he fell.

Onto the ground.

But as soon as he fell, he jumped into the air, landing safely on the branch of the tree.

Sean laughed out loud.

He had been holding back the laughter in his chest for sometime, but after Jason’s latest fail, it all came out.

"Hahahaha!"

Sean clutched his stomach as he laughed.

His laugh reminded Jason of that of a child, not an awakened who had experienced the lost of a companion.

He fell down on his butt as he laughed, landing on the large branch of the tree.

After some minutes, he finally stopped.

"Are you sure you didn’t just randomly appear in the forest, you’re even worse than brother thought you would be."

He wiped the tears that had formed from his face before getting up.

"If it goes like this, we won’t make it to the settlement in three days."

He got up.

"Just throw your weight into the jump."

Sean demonstrated by leaping from the branch he was on to the branch of the next tree.

Jason tried.

He began by imitating Sean’s posture, copying everything he had seen the boy do before leaping.

He jumped.

His body soared through the air.

And he landed on the branch perfectly.

Sean stared - wide-eyed and in shock - at Jason’s performance.

"That wasn’t really bad." He muttered to himself.

"Good."

He wasn’t as hostile as he was before.

His laughter at Jason’s actions proved that he was still a child at heart.

"Try and keep that up."

He began moving faster than before.

Jason had a hard time keeping up.

’The first time was just a fluke.’

Now, he had dodged more than five of those purple worm monsters before they could devour him raw.

"How do you even manage something like this?" Jason questioned as he finally caught up.

Sean spared him a glance before jumping.

Jason followed after him. He landed on the branch.

"Its just that you weren’t built for this."

He leaped again, and Jason followed after him.

Jumping from trees that stretched on to the sky.

’I wasn’t built for this.’

"Doing something like this isn’t something you can learn once, if I had to guess you started by last year."

He was trying to learn about the boy’s past so he could deduce when the boy became an awakened.

Sean grinned.

"No, I started five years ago."

He leaped to the next tree again.

Jason paused in his steps, feeling something fall onto his nose.

’Snow.’

The snow had begun to fall again.

Jason caught up with Sean.

"Five years ago?"

’I doubt that he was even an awakened at that point.’

How could an ordinary human being, even if strengthened by mana, jump from trees that were this far from each other.

Kira wasn’t even the kind of person that allowed his awakened brother fall from a tree, he doubted if he would allow his brother jump from tree-to-tree.

"Was it the clan that taught you?"

The only explanation was that he was guided by the Hachiman clan before he and his brother left.

Sean frowned at Jason’s words.

"The Hachiman clan..." He repeated, as if trying to fathom something.

"Aren’t you from the Hachiman clan?" Sean asked.

Jason nodded.

"Then if so, why would you ask something so stupid?"

His cheerful demeanor was gone, replaced by the coldness he exhibited on their first meeting.

"The Hachiman clan abandoned us years ago...

They abandoned us, and forced a pact on the two of us with the consequence of death.

Why would they teach us anything?"

Sean’s pace increased.

"You better keep up."

Then, he was launching himself from branch to branch, widening the distance between him and Jason.

Jason immediately followed after him, mulling over Sean’s words.

’Why would they force a pact on children?’ Jason wondered.

And it didn’t make any sense that they would task children with venturing out into monster territory.

’Why would the clan let go of someone with the Null eyes?’

Honestly, to Jason it didn’t make any sense.

The Null eyes had a very small chance of awakening in someone who wasn’t the child of the clan head.

It made no sense for the clan to let go of someone so valuable.

’Or is the Null eyes in abundance in this period of time?’

However, based on the history books of the clan, he had to doubt it.

’But are those history books really valid?’

He doubted it.

Why didn’t those history books have any information on Kira and Sean, or the girl that accompanied them?

He didn’t know that yet.

Jason focused on jumping from branch to branch.

Sean didn’t bother looking back at him and he didn’t bother catching up to him.

Hours flew by as two figures jumped endlessly from tree to tree without rest. Soon, snow began to fall from the sky.

Even then, nightfall did not reach.

The two individuals leaped from tree to tree, as if running on endless stamina.

Suddenly Sean stopped.

Jason quickly reached him.

"We’re here."

Jason blinked in confusion.

"Didn’t Kira say that it would take us a day and a half at my speed?" Jason questioned.

Sean shrugged in response.

"Who knows, maybe he got it wrong."

Jason nodded in response, moving closer to the edge of the branch.

He could see it.

The human settlement.

It wasn’t anything remarkable, but he noticed that it was covered by something.

What seemed to be a translucent veil covered its entirety.

Even with his eyes he found it hard to see.

’I wonder what its for.’

"Lets go."

Sean came down from the tree, free-falling.

"This is probably the only time you’ll get to free-fall." Jason commented as the boy fell.

Sean snorted in response.

Jason went after him.

’Even though he’s rude, he’s a good kid at heart.’

’Unlike most people I know.’

Zane and Hereon.

’Those two aren’t children at heart.’

He smirked to himself, feeling the wind get even colder as he descended.

Jason landed perfectly.

’They’re awakeneds.’
