Chapter 101: Another Meeting With The Clan Guardian (2)
"So your body unconsciously used the essence it was storing to heal you." The clan guardian muttered to herself.
Her expression contorted into a grin, a sinister grin.
Jason who sat down close to her couldn’t help but feel chills when looking at her expression.
"What did the essence look like?"
’I did say drank because it was water.’
"How much did you drink?"
"I drank as much as a small pond."
He really did drink all the water that was there.
There was silence for a minute.
"Do you hear voices in your head?"
"No."
The clan guardian sighed before getting up.
"You’re going to die soon, you must have a special constitution to survive for some weeks after in taking the essence, but regardless you will still die."
The clan guardian’s words hit him like a bullet, the realization that drinking water had messed up with his memories was one thing, but now the same water was going to kill him.
’Wait, it was the system that used the essence, not me.’ The thought helped him calm down.
Even though the essence was in his body after drinking the water, it had disappeared thoroughly after he regained control of his body.
"You don’t believe it?" Her tone carried a ting of amusement.
Jason couldn’t outright say that he didn’t believe her, but her words sounded too far-fetched to be true.
"The essence of a being is the condensed form of a soul, and a normal body can’t contain two souls without side-effects.
Those who drink it end up carrying two souls in their body; the original soul that controls the body and an extra soul condensed in the body.
For some, both souls fuse into one, causing the soul who controls the body to hear the voice of the other soul."
She stopped speaking, then continued.
"For unfortunate souls who consume it yet don’t hear voices, it means that their soul could not assimilate with the other one.
The end result is both souls exploding. It usually takes a day for it to happen. But you expended half of the energy to heal your arm and the other injuries you obtained in the dungeon.
And with your special constitution you managed to survive far longer than you were meant to have."
When the clan guardian was done explaining, Jason didn’t know how to react.
He wasn’t dumb and he understood the words of the clan guardian.
"Is there a way to stop it?"
The clan guardian seemed to be enjoying the situation.
"Of course." She answered.
Jason wanted to ask but felt it would be better to remain silent.
"To get rid of it, you need to force your body to harsh environments, harsh environments that won’t kill you yet bring you to the edge of death."
"Is there any other way?"
"No."
The weight of the clan guardian’s words hung over him. While he did trust the system, he couldn’t dismiss her words. The system hadn’t brought a notification to assert the clan guardian’s words, but it also hadn’t told him to dismiss her words.
He could be playing with his life if he chose not to take any actions against the soul.
’I drank some water, now I’m living on borrowed time because I drank it?’
"Of course, or did you believe the water you would find in a rank 4 dungeon would be safe for consumption?" Her words were almost mocking him.
"Does the strength of the souls have anything to do with it?"
The clan guardian did not answer him.
That only made Jason more anxious.
"What kind of harsh conditions?" He asked, his mind working the same time as his mouth.
He was hoping that the system would give him a notification telling him not to worry and it had dealt with the essence of a being, but it never came.
The system never came at the right time.
It had made sure his thoughts about it never reached the clan guardian, but beyond that it wasn’t being helpful now.
"Hunger, exhaustion, harsh environments, mana pressure." The clan guardian listed them out. "Under all those conditions, the second soul will be forced to expend its soul force to protect and sustain your body with it.
Eventually reaching a stage where it fully expends its soul force and dies."
’Rank 3, 4 and 5 dungeons obviously won’t push me that far.’ Jason thought. ’And I doubt a rank 2 dungeon would be able to do so as well.’
He wasn’t overestimating himself, and he doubted that the clan would allow him enter anything above a rank 3 dungeon, and even then they would force him to carry a squad of awakeneds with him.
’Wait...’ Jason paused his line of thought.
’I’ve been overreacting all along.’ He realized, coming to see how stupid he was behaving just because he realized his souls was going to explode. ’With this problem, there’s an opportunity attached to it. An opportunity I’ve been looking for but had no way of getting until now.’
"I would like to enter the A-dungeon." Jason said to the clan guardian. "Normal dungeons of rank 2-5 can’t help me with taking care of the extra soul, and even a rank 1 dungeon might not be able to push me there."
He would be able to fight in a rank 1 dungeon and survive even in a rank 1 dungeon if he had enough healing potions on hand.
"But in a normal rank 0 dungeon I will die, but the A-dungeon would be able to synchronize with my current strength, making it possible for me to survive."
Silence.
Suddenly, the clan guardian laughed.
"What makes you think you’re worth the effort of dropping you off at the portal to the A-dungeon?" She questioned.
She was amused.
Jason knew that he had to answer.
"Because if you didn’t find something in me you wouldn’t even bother with my presence."
As soon as he said those words he got ready to dodge.
But instead, she looked at him with a smirk.
"Your guess is correct, I did find something in you, it was something that I discovered decades before you were born."
The clan guardian did not attack him, instead she got up, her long robe trailing on the ground.
"You have a week to prepare for your departure, before you leave prepare well for the dungeon."
Her body shone in a golden, blinding light, one that forced Jason to cover his eyes.
"If any of the old men ask you about what happen, tell them to go screw themselves, and if they touch you I’m going to kill them."
When the light dimmed she was already gone.
Jason sat there bewildered for a few seconds, he still couldn’t believe that his wish had gone so smoothly.
Some weeks ago he had been wondering on who was going to give him permission to access the dungeon, but now the chance presented itself to him.
But it came at the cost of a chance of him dying.
He didn’t know if he should rejoice that he would be able to enter the A-dungeon now, or be infuriated at the fact that the Essence Of A Being could kill him before a week elapsed.
’I still can’t believe that it went so smoothly, I expected my head to be sliced off when I tried to argue with her.’
Jason let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding in.
He got up and stepped outside, but the moment he did, Jason paused.
There were over a dozen guards stationed outside, waiting for him to come out.
"Just what did you do, you dark-skinned bastard!" One of the guards yelled.
He couldn’t see the person’s face because of the mask that covered their face, but he could tell that it was a woman because her voice was feminine.
He scanned each and everyone of them with his eyes.
’They came here because of the line of death that the clan guardian threw at me.’ Jason thought.
The clan guardian had instructed him to tell the elders to screw themselves, but she didn’t tell me what to say to the guards.
"It was just-"
"Shut up! You killed him!"
He was about to explain himself when he was interrupted.
"It was just-"
"Shut up, you dark-skinned bastard!"
His patience was growing thin, in fact it had already been depleted to its thinnest.
’They’re only acting like that because I’m a magic cripple.’
If anything, he doubted if she would act the same way with Hereon.
And it pissed him off.
"I dare you to talk back to me again." He warned, his voice dead cold.
"Just shut up!" She yelled.
Her actions were irrational.
Jason’s patience cut into two strands.
To be treated like this just because he was dark-skinned didn’t make him happy.
"I warned you."
Jason was anything but happy, and the cause of his anger would be outlet to it.
