Chapter 153: I Thought I Knew

A Lu Zhi looked at the old woman and asked, "Aunty, then why are you still here? Are other villages’ situations the same as this village?"

The old woman sighed, looked at the sky and said, "I am an old woman who can neither work nor walk anymore. Why should I follow and burden others for an uncertain possibility? It is still better for me to stay and guard the ancestral land until my last breath. As for other villages, most of them have been abandoned, or there are only a few old people left like this village."

Hearing what the old woman said, A Lu Zhi finally knew why there were only these old people left in this village. No wonder he hasn’t seen anyone else around for so long. What’s more, this village looks desolate and too quiet, like a dead place.

After getting the information they needed, A Lu Zhi smiled at the villagers and said, "Thank you for answering our questions. I wish you a happy life. Goodbye."

After saying goodbye to the villagers, A Lu Zhi and A Lu Yu went back to their group. The villagers watched their backs in silence as they walked away.

When they couldn’t see the two brothers again, the oldest man sighed and said, "The world is dying. All we can do is pray for a better world where the younger generation can continue to live on."

After leaving Feng Shu Village, A Lu Yu and A Lu Zhi walked in silence. A Lu Zhi glanced at his second elder brother and asked, "Second Elder Brother, do you think it’s wrong for me to lead everyone to leave our homeland?"

Hearing his fourth younger brother’s question, A Lu Yu raised his eyebrows. He touched his chin, thought for a while, and asked, "Why do you think you are wrong?"

Lowering his eyes, A Lu Zhi said, "According to those villagers, the outside world is no better than our homeland. There are natural disasters, wars, refugees and homeless people. Can we survive in such a world?"

A Lu Yu nodded, and said, "After listening to what the villagers said, it’s not wrong for you to feel uneasy. Because, the unknown is always scary."

He was silent for a few seconds, and said, "Then let me ask you. Between inevitable death in the near future and an uncertain future, which would you choose?"

Hearing his question, A Lu Zhi chuckled and said, "I understand. Thank you, Second Elder Brother."

A Lu Yu smiled gently, but did not speak. After walking silently for another ten minutes, they saw the others resting on the side of the road. When A Lu Ge saw them coming back, he waved his hands at his two elder brothers and said, "Second Elder Brother, Fourth Elder Brother, quickly come and have your breakfast."

Looking at their lively youngest brother, the two chuckled at the same time. When they walked towards A Lu Ge, A Lu Zhi said, "Second Elder Brother, you are right. An uncertain future is better than inevitable death."

A Lu Yu nodded and said, "It’s good that you know."

When they sat on the ground beside A Lu Ge, he handed them two steamed buns and a cup of warm water each. After finishing his breakfast, A Lu Zhi went to find Xu Xiang and Mu Yucheng.

A Lu Zhi looked around, and saw Xu Xiang and Mu Yucheng sitting on the tree stumps from a distance. As he walked over, he said, "Xu Xiang, we have found out where we are."

Xu Xiang waited until he sat down on another tree stump and asked, "What did you find?"

A Lu Zhi said, "That village is called Feng Shu Village. The villagers said that their village is under the direct management of the county magistrate in Lin Zi City, and it is under the government of Long Sha County."

After finishing speaking, he looked at Mu Yucheng and asked, "Do you know how far we are from that valley?"

Mu Yucheng thought for a while and said, "The valley is located at the outskirts of the Yao Gu Sect."

"Is that far from here?" A Lu Zhi asked again.

After a moment of silence, Mu Yucheng said, "I don’t know."

A Lu Zhi was speechless when he heard Mu Yucheng’s answer. He glanced at Xu Xiang, then looked at Mu Yucheng, and asked, "..... Then... How did you get to the valley before?"

"Follow my Shifu." He replied without expression.

This time, hearing his answer, even Xu Xiang was speechless. Trying not to roll her eyes at him, she said, "Since you don’t know how to get there, why did you tell us about the valley? You even told us to find where we are. It’s like by knowing where we are, you will know how to get to the valley."

Mu Yucheng looked at her and said, "I thought I knew, but it seems that I don’t know."

Becoming speechless after hearing his answer, Xu Xiang and A Lu Zhi looked at each other. When they looked into each other’s eyes, they decided never to ask Mu Yucheng for answers anymore in the future. Since Mu Yucheng is useless in providing any information now, A Lu Zhi looked at Xu Xiang.

He thought for a while and said, "Xu Xiang, when my second elder brother and I asked the villagers, the villagers told us that there was no man’s land in the west. The villagers said that most of the refugees, disaster victims and war victims went there. Do you want to go there and take a look?"

Hearing what he said, Xu Xiang asked, "Did the villagers tell you about the situation there?"

A Lu Zhi shook his head and said, "No. They just said that since they can’t go to Lin Zi City, it’s better to go to the west and find a place by themselves."

Hearing what he said, Xu Xiang guessed that this no man’s land is actually a wasteland, or undeveloped land.
