Chapter 79: Mum?(1)
The silence in the room stretched on like a string pulled taut, threatening to snap at any moment. Not a clock ticked.
Not a breath stirred. Only the rising panic in Gina’s chest betrayed that time was, indeed, still moving.
She sat on the edge of the bed, shoulders stiff, her hands clenching the bedsheet. Her wide eyes were locked on Mikey—confused, afraid, and barely able to speak.
"What do you mean...?" Her voice cracked mid-sentence, like glass under pressure.
"What do you mean we...we’re... we’re no longer in my world?"
Her voice trembled as she leaned slightly closer, her lips parted just enough to reveal a hint of vulnerability.
"Mikey... what did you do?"
And there it was. Mikey’s name. Spoken aloud by her.
He froze.
Of all the time he’d spent immersed in the Web Novel Deluxe Module, all the hours playing and interacting with her in that fictional world, she had never once said his name.
Not like this. Not with this realness. The moment felt uncanny, twisted—like reality was peeling at the edges. This feels so fucking weird, he thought.
He instinctively lifted his hands and waved them slightly, awkwardly, as if trying to swat away the tension.
"No, no—I didn’t... I didn’t do anything."
But even as the words left his lips, his thoughts betrayed him. That’s the thing, isn’t it? I have no clue what happened. None of this has ever happened before. She’s not supposed to be here...
He ran a hand through his hair, disheveled already from a restless morning.
His brain felt like it was ricocheting against itself.
’How the hell am I supposed to explain this? ’Oh hey, Gina, you somehow leapt out of a fictional universe and into the real world. Oops.’ That’s not something you say out of no where and expect anyone to believe.’
"I... I really don’t know." he admitted at last, his voice quieter now.
"I just feel like... something went wrong. Or maybe right. I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t even know what to say."
’Where’s my sharp tongue and silver lies when I actually need them?’ he cursed silently.
Gina blinked, then abruptly turned her back to him, her arms folding tightly over her chest. Her voice rose, sharper this time.
"No. No! What are you saying? We have to go back. I don’t... I don’t feel right, Mikey. I feel... off. This isn’t funny. Just—just take me back. Right now. Or I’ll—"
"She’s really freaking out." Mikey muttered under his breath, watching her from the corner of his eye.
"Gina, listen—" he began, but then paused, unsure of what exactly he wanted her to listen to.
With a frustrated groan, he stood up and started pacing the room. His hands moved to his hips as he walked from wall to wall, muttering beneath his breath, each step heavier than the last.
’Think, Mikey. Think. You’ve gotten out of worse situations. Hell, you’ve been in deep shit with the iron vipers...but—’
But this is real.
And you’re alone.
She’s here. In the real world. And you have no idea how to get her back.
His mind finally landed on one desperate hope.
The Future Sight Stone.
It had helped before. If he could use it again, maybe—just maybe—his future self would show him how to fix this.
But there was a catch.
He still needed time before he could use it again. A cooldown, of sorts.
And until then?
He glanced at Gina, who was now trembling lightly with her arms clutched around her.
’How do I keep her from bolting? From calling for help? From telling my parents?’
’Do I feed her? Do I distract her? Do I... seduce her until she’s too exhausted to care?’ he shook his head at the absurdity.
’Yeah, like that’s going to backfire.’
Then, like a spark flaring in the dark, a single thought struck him.
He stopped pacing.
A sigh escaped him—half surrender, half discovery.
"That’s it..." he whispered, eyes flicking toward her again.
She turned back to him slowly, her expression hardening with tension.
Her eyes were no longer pleading—they were demanding.
Desperate.
"Okay." he said, swallowing hard.
"Here’s the thing... I don’t... I don’t exactly know how to get you back."
Her lips parted to speak, to scream, maybe—but he held up his hand quickly.
"But." he added.
"that doesn’t mean there isn’t a way. I’m working on it. I just... I need a little time."
There was a pause.
A breathless, suspended silence.
"How much time?" she asked, narrowing her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest.
The motion pressed her breasts together beneath the fabric of her shirt—drawing Mikey’s eyes for a second before he caught himself and looked back up, cheeks reddening.
"Just..." he held up one finger.
"One day. Just a day, Gina. That’s all I’m asking for. Please."
This is crucial, he thought. If she doesn’t agree... if she runs off or tells someone... then I’m seriously screwed.
Gina stared at him for a long, excruciating moment. Her brows furrowed. Her lips pressed into a tight line. Her jaw tensed.
Then, at last, she exhaled.
"One day," she said slowly.
"One. I’ll give you one day, Mikey. You better get your weird magic or whatever you call it figured out."
Mikey let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. "Thank you," he whispered.
Rubbing the back of his neck, he offered a small, sheepish smile. "Don’t worry. In twenty-four hours, you’ll be back to your—"
Knock. Knock. Knock.
The three sharp raps at the door sliced through the tension like a blade.
Mikey froze.
His head snapped toward the door, heart suddenly racing.
’Who the hell—?’
His thoughts scrambled.
’ Aurora? No, she already came by. Then who—’
"Who’s there?" he called, voice tense.
A pause.
Then a voice—soft, familiar, and bone-chilling.
"Mikey? Is that you?"
He felt the air drain from his lungs.
That voice.
It wasn’t Aurora.
No, it was far worse than that.
It was his mother.
