Chapter 62: The D-day
"Return"
A sudden snap of energy crackled in the air, as though reality itself was bending under an invisible force. Light, blinding and white-hot, erupted around Mikey.
The world cracked open, light blinding and white-hot as it showered on him. For a second, everything shimmered. The cell blurred and his older self faded and just like that, he faded as well.
Everything went silent.
For a few moments, he was suspended in limbo. He felt weightless—like he was floating, his senses stretched thin and distant.
His mind swam in an ocean of nothingness, struggling to comprehend the enormity of what had just happened.
’Am...am I back?....Why didn’t I get transported back right away?’
A worthy question indeed. However, right then, like the snap of a string, everything stopped.
Mikey’s eyes blinked open, the familiar, comforting darkness of his room greeting him.
He let out a soft gasp as the world around him came into focus. His breathing was shallow, his heart thudding wildly against his chest as he processed the sudden shift.
His gaze darted around. The cell was gone. The glowing lights. The future Mikey. Everything. Gone.
"I... I’m back home." Mikey whispered to himself.
He blinked again, realizing where he was. His bedroom. The familiar layout along with the comforting scent of his own space gave him his classic nostalgic home sweet home feeling.
He ran a hand through his hair and shot up from the bed, his movements sharp and almost instinctual.
his gaze flicker down to the phone, his eyes meetinh with his last missions display page. The mission he had long wanted to retrieve. however, lingered in his thoughts.
’Hmmm....Angela huh....I’m not ready to give you up, not yet, even if there’s no extra reward for satisfyinh uou.’
He muttered under his breath, defiant.
"I better screenshot this for later."
His finger tapped the screen, screenshotting the novel page and a sigh escaped his lips.
For now, everything was good. His mission was complete.
His future self had offered solid advice—words that still echoed in his mind—but the road ahead was far from over. He needed to grow stronger. Sharpen his skills. Because tomorrow wasn’t just another day.
Tomorrow was the day—the one that would decide everything.
His first real hurdle- Son Parker.
Mikey didn’t know exactly how to feel. He didn’t feel ready, not really. But deep down, something told him he had no choice. This was a challenge he had to face. Ready or not.
His older self’s words echoed in his mind once more. He couldn’t afford to let his guard down. Not now. He had to focus.
With all that said and done, he casually returned back to the featured page again, ready to recommence a mission, but before he could make any decisions, a soft knock echoed through the door.
Knock
knock
knock
Mikey froze, his heart leaping into his throat.
’The fuck? Who could that be?’ He didn’t expect anyone today. He’d been hiding away, grinding and leveling up as much as he could and right now he didn’t need anyone disturbing his grind at- He glanced at his phone—3:02 PM. He had no time for visitors and he wasn’t expecting anyone.
"Who is it?"
Mikey stood up quickly and padded toward the door, his thoughts scrambling. He reached for the doorknob, his fingers brushing it just as a voice called out.
"Open the damn door, Mikey!"
It was a voice he immediately recognized. He rolled his eyes. It had to be her.
He groaned softly and opened the door. And there she was. Aurora.
Still dressed in her school uniform, her posture rigid, and her eyes sharp with that same fiery intensity.
The moment her eyes met Mikey’s, her lips pressed into a hard line, and without missing a beat, she stepped past him, barging into his room as if it were her own. She dropped herself onto the bed with a huff, crossing her arms as her gaze locked onto him.
Mikey raised an eyebrow and closed the door, locking it behind him as he turned to face her. He sighed.
"Really, Aurora?" Mikey said, his voice thick with confusion.
"You couldn’t have called first?"
"No...I couldn’t. " she snapped, her voice cool, but there was an unmistakable tension in it.
"What the hell do you think you’re doing, Mikey?"
He blinked.
"What? I’m just—"
"No." she cut him off, sitting up straighter, her glare fixed on him.
"Don’t play coy. You know what I’m talking about."
Mikey rubbed his eyes, trying to keep his cool.
"What do you mean?"
"You think you can just go around challenging Sam Parker to a fight?" she demanded, her voice rising slightly.
"Do you even realize what kind of mess you’re getting yourself into? What are you thinking? This is madness, Mikey! Do you really think you can beat someone like Son?"
Mikey stared at her, trying to find the words, but all he could manage to stutter was-
"Why do you care?"
She let out an exasperated sigh, her eyes narrowing.
"Because I’m the one who’s been trying to keep you alive, you idiot." She jumped to her feet, her eyes flashing.
"You don’t get it, do you? You got yourself involved with the Vipers, and now you’re in debt up to your neck. And you think challenging him—Sun Parker—is going to solve anything?"
Mikey didn’t respond immediately. He crossed his arms and leaned back, staring at her, not bothering to hide the frustration building up inside him.
"Maybe I didn’t want anyone to hit you. How about that? You think I was just going to sit back and let you get dragged into that mess without doing something?"
Aurora opened her mouth, then paused, as if she hadn’t expected that response. For a moment, the room was silent, save for the tension between them.
Mikey continued, voice steady, but thick with something deeper.
"Maybe I’m not a hero, but I can fight. I can protect myself. Maybe I can even land a hit on Sun Parker. How do you know I can’t? You don’t trust me? You think I’m that stupid?"
Aurora’s face softened for a fraction of a second.
"Don’t give me that bullshit, Mikey." She shook her head, her voice quiet but firm.
"You can’t win. You can’t beat someone like him. Sun’s never taken a hit. Not in public, at least. And you think you’re the first to be able to land one on him? You’re out of your mind."
Mikey stood still for a moment, silent, his thoughts churning beneath the surface. Then he spoke—his voice low, steady, and resolute.
Aurora’s worries were valid—every word she spoke rang with truth. But no matter how much Mikey tried to consider her plea, his thoughts kept circling back to one thing: his future self.
He remembered what his older self had told Jim—that he had paid Son off. That he had tried to walk away.
But Son hadn’t let him.
Maybe that was just the kind of person Son was—someone who latched onto opportunity like a leech, someone who saw people not as individuals, but as sources of profit. Mikey had tried to do the right thing once... and Son still came back for more.
Who was to say he wouldn’t do it again?
That thought, more than anything, anchored Mikey’s resolve. He had made up his mind. This wasn’t just about pride or proving something—it was survival. It was about reclaiming his future before someone like Son took it from him all over again.
"I’m going to fight him, Aurora. Not because I believe I can win with a single strike... but because I have to. I have to. If I don’t, I’ll lose everything. The future—my future—depends on this."
Aurora remained quiet, her expression unreadable. She looked at him for a long while, her eyes searching his face. Then, slowly, her features softened. She took a quiet step forward, reaching out until her fingers brushed against his hand—gentle, hesitant, but warm.
"Promise me something," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. It trembled slightly, wrapped in emotion.
"If it gets too dangerous—if it looks like you might really get hurt—promise me you’ll stop. Promise me you’ll walk away."
Mikey stared at her, heart pounding in his chest. Her words settled over him like a blanket, heavy and warm. And for the first time, he truly felt it—the weight of her concern, the sincerity in her eyes. Her touch wasn’t just comforting; it was grounding. A quiet reminder that, even in a world this cold and unforgiving, someone still cared.
Someone cared about him.
"I promise," he said quietly.
Aurora gave a shaky breath, and her lips curled into a faint, almost sad smile.
"Just... don’t do something stupid, okay?"
Mikey gave her a small nod, his own heart heavy with the weight of the decision ahead. "I won’t. I swear."
Aurora lingered a moment longer, then slowly stood up, her eyes never leaving Mikey’s. She gave him one last look, full of uncertainty and concern, before she turned and walked toward the door.
As she reached for the handle, she glanced back at him, her voice soft. "If you change your mind... I’ll be here...we could still try giving him the 7 grand."
And with that, she left, closing the door behind her, leaving Mikey alone in the quiet of his room.
Alone with his thoughts. Alone with the battle ahead. And as the night stretched on, he knew one thing for sure: Tomorrow would decide everything. There would be no turning back.
And in due time, the D-day arrived at long last- The day Mikey Dickson battled against Son Parker.
