Chapter 43: Next Big Mission![R18+]
Shut.
Click.
The sound of Mikey’s door shutting echoed softly in the air, a dull vibration that barely registered in his exhausted mind.
Battered and bruised, he strode forward with sluggish steps before collapsing onto his bed, his body landing with a dull thud. His limbs sprawled carelessly as he let out a weary exhale, his aching muscles protesting the movement.
His bruises from the brutal encounter with Son pulsed with sharp pain, but he ignored them, atleast as much as he could. His phone remained gripped in his hand, buzzing relentlessly.
Ding.
Ding.
Ding.
A flood of notifications filled his lock screen, flooding in by the minute, but they barely caught his attention.
His eyes flicked toward the glowing device, and all he could see was one name: Aurora. Seven new messages.
For a moment, his mind felt scattered, but even in his disarray, one thing was clear—he didn’t care enough to check. Without a second glance, his gaze drifted lower, scanning his notifications. But something felt off. His phone screen blinked erratically, notifications appearing from the left side. He squinted at the screen—
’ No web novel notification.’
Realization struck like a hammer.
Then, after a short pause, his fist clenched.
BANG!
His knuckles slammed into the wall, three heavy strikes that echoed through the room. His body tensed as he let out a furious scream, his voice raw and unfiltered.
"Fuck! Fuck! Fuck! Why does this always have to happen to me?!"
He turned abruptly, sitting up on the bed, groaning as pain flared through his sore muscles. His hands gripped his head, fingers tangling in his hair as his mind spiraled.
’Why the hell did I buy this piece of garbage? "Deceptive Reasoning" my ass! All it did was ruin my life! Fuck. Fuckk!!’
His voice broke into a frenzied rant, his body shaking as frustration boiled over.
"And now I have four days. Four days until my debt is doubled! What the hell am I suppose to do now? "
Grunting loudly, he snatched up his phone and hurled it against the wall, utterly infuriated not just in himself, but in NovelFire as well.
It hit the edge with a dull thud, landing face-down on the floor. His hands clenched into fists as he paced the room, his movements jerky and agitated despite the pain rippling through his body.
"Why the hell did I do it? Why the hell did I buy this godforsaken skill?! " he shouted, voice cracking.
"It ruined my fucking life! Hell, it ended my life! I’m fucked! I’m so fucked! God damn it, I’m so fucked! "
His rant stretched on, spiraling into madness, as he searched for a means of conciliation, but there was none.
While he was drowning in his fury, something else was happening. A soft ding echoed from his fallen phone as a notification popped up on the lock screen.
[Deceptive Reasoning is now active]
Mikey didn’t notice. He was too lost in his emotions, too consumed by the relentless barrage of failures. But a few seconds after the notification appeared, suddenly, his movements stilled. His mouth clamped shut as if an invisible force had silenced him. And for the first time, his mind felt...clear.
"Hold up."
He muttered softly, the words barely audible.
"Maybe... maybe I’m just seeing this the wrong way."
His head lifted, his steps slowing as he walked toward the small, cheaply made mirror in the corner of his room. He gazed at his reflection, taking in the battered face staring back at him. Bruises bloomed across his skin, dark and ugly, but his eyes held something new—determination.
" Obviously, getting the seven thousand dollars is out of the question for now." he murmured.
"Technically, I can’t just report that I’m uncontracted and earning from NovelFire, nor can I go around asking questions publicly without risking exposure—who knows what would happen if word got out about my secret system? That means the only real way to solve this problem... is to clear the debt another way."
His mind raced as a subtle realization crawled onto him.
’Land a hit, sounds easy and impossible, but very much feasible.’
He thought within himself.
"I mean, I have a goddamn system. It increases my stats. It gives me skills. Skills that I can actually use in real life. "
He let the thought sink in.
"That’s something even the biggest gangster in Metropolitan High doesn’t have."
He exhaled sharply, his resolve hardening as a plan slowly began to settle.
" That said...If I grind like before and level up my stats along with my skills... could it be possible that landing a hit on Son would be easier?"
He paused his speech for a moment as his gaze flickered to his palm, his face still laced with uncertainty.
"So...is that why Deceptive Reasoning made me create such a foul deal? "
Back then, he had been panicked. His mind hadn’t been clear, and in truth, giving a 1 star rating to NovelFire was far from his true evil intentions for the app. But now? Now, he had a fighting chance, and he knew it.
He straightened his posture, shoulders squared, as a quiet conviction settled within him. His gaze locked onto his reflection.
"I can do it. "
His voice was firm now, no longer trembling with doubt.
"I have four days to grind. If I work just as hard as before... with all the skills I can get... I’ll have enough money to buy more skills and level up my stats. "
His gaze then flickered back to the mirror as he took another glance of himself.
A slow smirk curled his lips.
"Yes."
He clenched his fists, his voice unwavering.
"I can do it. I can beat Son Parker."
***
It had been a few hours since Mikey returned from school.
After a quick shower and dinner, he had locked himself in his room, avoiding all contact from reality as much as he could. With his phone set to Do Not Disturb, and his door and windows locked shut, he had no further distraction left.
Sitting on his bed, he pulled out his phone, his fingers tapping open the NovelFire App. He wasted no time scrolling, searching for his next big mission. His first mission to recommence his grind.
He scrolled through the featured page, his eyes scanning title after title. He needed something—anything.
But not just anything.
What he really wanted was an easy difficulty mission. It was the safest bet. It would guarantee him +1 stat gain in all player points, along with two soul cores—resources he could exchange for something useful.
But still... easy difficulty missions wasn’t what he needed was-
’What if I tried a normal difficulty mission?’
It sounded like a big ask, but that was exactly what he needed. His finger hovered over the screen as he considered it.
Normal difficulty missions would take more time and it was way riskier. But if he kept doing easy missions, he’d never grow stronger. He had to conquer normal difficulty. Ofcourse, he was able to complete a few normal difficulty missions before, but he needed to master it, that was the only way he was ever going to truly grow.
He clenched his jaw.
’I’m going to do it. I’m going to take a normal difficulty mission.’
With all that said, the real question was- where the hell was he supposed to find one?
His eyes flicked over the screen, scrolling through the Featured works list. He scrolled through for quite some time, patiently searching through all available works in search of his perfect harem story.
Then—
His gaze locked onto a title.
[My Harem System.]
Wasting only a moment, he tapped on the novel, following the redirect to the novel’s page.
Upon entering the page, his eyes caught sight of what seemed to be the first red flag.
The Read Now button was locked, and below it, a message flashed in bold letters:
[Player must complete several Normal Difficulty Mission to unlock Hard Difficulty Missions.]
He paused for a moment, slightly disappointed by the feature.
The book didn’t have any cover photo, but it was a Hard Difficulty Mission. And as disappointing as it felt, he wished he could have atleast had a demo look at what a hard difficulty mission would feel like.
As he stared at the screen, a thought crept in.
’Is there really any point in reading the synopsis when I can’t even access the mission?’
A worthy question with quite a simple answer. So, just as he was about to tap the back button on his phone, something else caught his eye.
It hit him then—an image was displayed in the "similar works" section, which immediately caught his eye. It was a woman, or rather, the character of the book cover.
She was stunning. Perfect golden hair—short, yet radiant. But that wasn’t what sent a thrill down his spine. No, what truly grabbed his attention was when he realized—the character was utterly naked.
Her breasts—large, full, and delectably bare—hung with a tempting weight, their perky nipples flushed a deep, needy red, standing stiff with arousal. A sheer pink panty clung to her curves, doing nothing to conceal the mouthwatering shape of her hips, the plush roundness of her thighs, or the sheer perfection of her ass—succulent, ripe, and begging to be grabbed.
From this angle, every inch of her body was a masterpiece of raw temptation, and the faint blush dusting her cheeks only made her all the more irresistible—a vision of pure, unfiltered desire.
Mikey, being the true pervert he was, couldn’t look away.
