Chapter 41: It’s Not Enough
Chapter 41: It’s Not Enough
Stomp.
Stomp.
Stomp.
The sounds of feet colliding with flesh echoed through the alley, reverberating off the cold, plastered walls.
The Iron Vipers stood around, some looking stunned, others unable to meet the scene with their eyes, turning their heads away. But the sound continued.
Stomp.
Stomp.
Stomp.
And there Mikey was, motionless—coiled up on the ground, his arms wrapped around his head in a feeble attempt to shield himself.
Mikey’s body was covered in grime, bruises forming along his skin, yet the beating didn’t stop. Son just kept going, relentless. His boots hammered down, one after another, his stomps landing without any particular rhythm, hitting Mikey’s chest, his head—wherever he pleased.
The brutal force drove Mikey’s face to the side, but he barely reacted, barely flinched. He only grunted with each impact, his body curling tighter in an attempt to absorb the pain.
Son’s breath came ragged, but his expression remained eerily indifferent. His eyes were dull, devoid of hesitation.
The weight of Son’s violence bore down on him, and for the first time, real fear coursed through him. He had been beaten before— as expected by anyone within his size. But this... this was different. This didn’t feel like any regular bully plunder. No, that’d just be an understatement.
As the furious stomps continued, soon, One of the Iron Vipers stepped forward, hesitating before extending his slightly trembling hand.
"B-Boss... that’s enough, don’t you think?" His voice wavered, but Son didn’t even acknowledge him. Rather, his foot came down again, harder than before, driving Mikey’s skull into the concrete. The Viper flinched.
"...He’s just a peep-squeak. If you keep going, he’s not gonna make it!" he shouted, desperation creeping into his tone.
Nevertheless, Son’s expression remained unchanged. He kept going, unfazed by the implications of His comrades fears.
Then another Viper, more desperate now, called out.
"Boss! If you kill him now, he won’t be able to pay you back your money! You’ll lose the seven grand!"
That did it. Upon hearing those words, Son’s foot hovered midair, frozen. For the first time since he started, he paused.
The silence that followed was thick, suffocating and almost unending. The Iron Vipers stared at him, waiting, unsure of what would happen next. Mikey as well, barely conscious, pryed his swollen eyes open, sighting Son’s boot which was still raised, but no movement followed.
Mikey’s breaths came in a little ragged, bitten by the inward question—
’Why did he stop?’
It was only for a moment, but in that fleeting second, his guard slipped. And immediately following that—
CRACK.
A savage kick slammed into Mikey’s face, snapping his head backward. Once more, blood sprayed from his mouth, his body jerking from the impact. His mind barely registered the pain before another cough of blood erupted from his lips. His vision blurred, and his hands instinctively clutching his face where the pain throbbed most. The burning under his eye was unbearable, but what truly terrified him was Son’s voice as he uttered so calmly.
"Oh, right." Son mused, his tone almost amused.
"I forgot about that...you guys really believe this shrink can com3 up with seven grand? I know I dont..." He scoffed, tilting his head slightly to the side.
"...So maybe I should just kill him now and be done with it."
The tension in the alley thickened. No one moved. The Iron Vipers watched, uncertain of what would occur not, and Mikey, still hunched over, barely holding himself up, felt Son’s presence loom closer.
Then, without warning, Son grabbed Mikey by the hair, yanking him up. A guttural groan escaped Mikey’s lips as his hands instinctively shot up, grasping at Son’s wrist, desperate to relieve the pressure. But the moment his fingers made contact, a sharp blow exploded against his face.
A powerful punch which sent another wave of agony through his skull. He crumpled, his hands clutching his nose, certain it was broken.
Son sneered, towering over him.
"Don’t fucking touch me." His grip tightened on Mikey’s head, dragging him even closer.
"Now, I want you to listen very carefully."
Mikey trembled, unable to respond.
In a smooth casual motion, Son leaned in, his breath hot against Mikey’s ear.
"Today’s your lucky day, Lil Dicky."
The words should have been a relief, but they weren’t. There was something sinister in the way Son said it, something that made Mikey’s stomach churn.
"I don’t usually do this." Son continued.
"But out of the courtesy that my subordinate attacked you without cause, I’ll give you till Friday to come up with the seven grand."
Mikey’s breath hitched.
’Huh? He’s gonna let me live?’
"That’s two more days." Son cut through Mikey’s thoughts.
"By then, I want my fucking money. All of it. I don’t care how you get it—beg, steal, sell your fucking body. I don’t give a shit." His grip on Mikey’s hair tightened painfully.
"But if you don’t have it by then..." Son’s voice dropped lower, turning ice-cold and evil.
"You won’t be the only one suffering."
Mikey’s body went rigid.
Son smirked, sensing the fear settling in.
"That little bitch of yours... will be saying hello to me."
Mikey’s stomach twisted into a knot. His lips parted, but no words came out. Son’s fingers dug into his scalp, yanking him closer as he deepened his glare.
"Do I make myself clear?"
A choked grunt of pain was the only response Mikey could manage, his body still aching him with each subtle movement he was forced to take.
With an almost effortlessly shove, Son threw Mikey back, sending his body crashing down at the concrete hard, his vision flashing white with pain.
"Now get the fuck out of my sight."
Mikey lay there for a moment, his entire body screaming in protest. Then, slowly, and painfully, he forced himself up, his limbs shaking.
The Iron Vipers watched as he staggered forward, every step a struggle which resulted in a gentle grunt. He reached down, fingers barely wrapping around his Phone which laid on the ground, the only thing left untouched in the chaos.
Clutching it tightly, he dragged himself forward, step by agonizing step, away from the alley, away from Son, away from the nightmare that had nearly ended his life.
His mouth tasted of blood. His body throbbed in places he hadn’t even realized were hit. He could barely move. The thought of going back to school was impossible now. Hiding from the school authorities would be hard enough, but that was the least of his problems. Because regardless of what he’d just been put through, he still owed seven thousand dollars to the bully that was Son Parker.
The weight of it all pressed down on him, but at least, for now, he was alive.
’Just keep moving.’
Mikey told himself.
’Just leave. Regroup and then we can figure out how to solve the problem.’
It sounded so straightforward, like nothing could honestly ever go wrong, but there was always something.
BZZZT.
A vibration in his hand.
His gaze drifted down to his phone phone, and there he was met with a pop-up notification.
His bloodied fingers twitched as he hesitantly glanced at the screen, slightly bewildered.
[NovelFire Notification]
[Deceptive Reasoning is now Active]
For a moment, the pain faded. The exhaustion disappeared, and his breath hitched, his fingers tightening around the device.
He stared, still confused for the moment but then-
"Hmm...You really are a spineless coward filled with nothing but lady nuts down there, aren’t ya, Parker?"
Mikey uttered so casually, those words which sent down a chill of astonishment not just down the spines of all the Iron Vipers present, but down his own.
’....Ehh?’ That was all he could fluster together inwardly.
His next actions were completely against his control. He paused his steps, tilting his head slightly to attain a good look of Son.
Then, after a brief pause, Son slowly turned to face him, his expression filled with awe.
"What the hell did you just say to me?"
Mikey swallowed hard, instilled by fear to the bone, but instead of backing down, his body took a step forward. His voice rang out, sharp and deliberate.
"Hmmm." He tilted his head, as a weary smirk drew on his face.
"Oh—are they deaf too? I said, you really are a spineless coward filled with lady nuts."
The moment the words left his mouth, the weight of them settled in the air. A cold silence followed. Then, as if that was not enough, a soft chuckle escaped Mikey’s lips as he added,
"And to think, a so-called former boxer like you needs a whole gang of losers just to take on a peep-squeak like me."
The way he said it—so casual, almost amused—only made it worse. It was a taunt wrapped in cool confidence, and for a split second, it was funny. But then, Mikey saw the look on Son’s face, which had all the emotions all except amusement.
He was provoked, without a doubt.
And at that moment, as realization dawned, a chilling thought raced through Mikey’s mind, or rather it was the only thought he could think off—
’What the fuck am I doing?’
