Chapter 38: The Perfect Plan...Or Not
Chapter 38: The Perfect Plan...Or Not
Mikey took deep, heavy breaths, his chest rising and falling in a desperate attempt to calm himself. His throat felt dry, and his hands clammy.
"Okay... okay Mikey... stay calm." he muttered, clenching his fists. But no matter how much he tried to reassure himself, the truth remained—he had lost the money. Seven thousand dollars, gone. Just like that, not that he ever had it anyway.
"Damn it." he hissed under his breath, dragging his fingers through his hair. He thought he could have made it work by forming a way to save himself and Aurora.
But the world had proved him wrong—again.
There was no borrowing that kind of money. Not as an average student like him.
’Seven thousand dollars. Who in their right mind would lend me that amount? Not that I can pay it back by the way.’
The answer was clear—Hmo one. He was alone in this. Left with nothing but the gnawing weight of uncertainty, the kind that slithered beneath his skin and refused to let go.
The more he thought about it, the more unbearable it became. How had it come to this? How had Aurora ended up in such a mess, owing that much? The question festered, whispering accusations in the silence.
"So what the hell do I do now?" he thought, his pulse pounding. He had two choices— run away and let the Iron Vipers decide whether to save Aurora or figure out another way to scrape together seven grand.
He swallowed hard. He needed a plan, ’cause there was no way in hell he was going to sit back and take a beatdown. But what other option did he have? He had hours at most until Son would demand for the money, so what the hell could he do?
"Damn it, think!" he scolded himself. His only options were either skipping school or, even crazier, skipping life itself. He snorted at the absurdity. What was he going to do, lock himself in his room forever? Hide away until the world forgot he existed? Though, it didn’t really sound that bad to him.
"Yeah, right. That’s not happening."
He had to face it. He needed a plan—a real one. The only thing that made sense was avoiding those bastards at all costs. But what about Aurora? What about his social life, or whatever you might call it?
He groaned, rubbing his temples. He had tried to be the hero. But heroes didn’t always win. And right now, he felt like the universe was laughing in his face.
Sighing, he sat up straighter, determination setting in.
"Okay, maybe things aren’t that bad. Maybe I can still go to school, finish my assignments... and just lay low. I’ll hide, keep out of sight, and the moment that last bell rings—I’m out of there."
It was a decent plan. If he could pull it off today, maybe he could stretch it out till the weekend. That would buy him more time to figure out what went wrong with the deluxe mode. Maybe there was a glitch, maybe he’d been scammed—whatever the reason, he needed answers.
With a heavy sigh, he grabbed his phone, taking one last look before steeling himself for the day ahead.

School was the same as always—chaotic, loud, suffocating. Classes dragged on, some filled with attentive students, others a mess of chatter and half-hearted lectures.
Mikey had picked the perfect seat. Nestled at the far edge of the classroom, hidden behind taller students, he was practically invisible. The teacher barely glanced his way. No one did.
’Good.’ he thought.
’Let’s keep it that way.’
He followed the same strategy throughout the day, sticking to the shadows, blending in, and the best part was it was actually working. The hours passed, the school day bleeding together in a blur.
Then— finally, the bell rang.
Ring
Ring
Lunchtime.
The classroom erupted into chatter, chairs scraping against the floor as students hurried out. The teacher’s voice was drowned out, his assignment barely acknowledged as the students flooded into the hallways.
Lunchtime was sacred for high schoolers. Normally, Mikey would have welcomed the break, maybe met up with his friends. Maybe even gotten a chance to talk to Aurora.
But not today.
Today, lunch break was a death trap.
As the room emptied, he remained at his desk, frozen, as the thought dwelled on him- he had no shield now. No crowd to blend into. No protection.
"Shit... I’m...on my own."
He swallowed the lump in his throat, the bitter taste of solitude settling deep in his chest. Around him, his classmates moved in lively clusters, their laughter echoing down the hallway as they made their way to the cafeteria. They were excited—ready to eat, joke around, and lose themselves in the warmth of shared company.
But him? He stood there, isolated, the realization sinking in like a cold weight in his stomach—he hadn’t eaten since morning. And now, as the scent of food drifted through the air, his hunger clawed at him, relentless and unforgiving.
His stomach growled angrily. He had been running on adrenaline and fear all day, and now it was catching up to him.
"Great. Just great." he muttered, rubbing his stomach. He was starving, but going to the cafeteria? That was basically suicide.
"I can’t go out there. If I do, I’ll be seen. And if I’m seen—"
He didn’t even want to think about it. You see, the Iron Vipers ate in the cafeteria, and he was well versed that for a fact. There was no avoiding them if he went in. And if they saw him? Well, the beating would come early.
"Nope. Not happening."
Staying hidden was his best option. He’d just have to survive the hunger. Lunch break was only an hour. Then, two more hours of classes. He could make it.
"Two hours. Just two more hours, then I’m free."
He sighed, crossing his arms over his desk, lowering his head. Maybe he could sleep through it, let the hunger fade.
Closing his eyes, he exhaled slowly, willing his body to relax. He wasn’t tired, not really, but he had no other choice.
"Just hold on, Mikey. Just hold on..."
Mikey felt the weight of exhaustion creeping over him like a lazy cat curling up on his shoulders. His eyelids grew heavier with each passing second, his body sinking into his seat as if gravity itself had doubled. He let out a soft sigh, folding his arms on the desk and resting his head atop them.
At first, he only meant to relax for a moment. Just a quick reset, nothing too deep. But as the silence around him thickened, he could feel it—the slow, steady descent into sleep. The kind that wraps around you like a warm blanket, pulling you under bit by bit.
His breathing slowed. His muscles slackened. Sleep was right there, knocking gently at the door of his consciousness.
Then, just when he felt it.
Tap.
Tap.
Mikey barely registered the faint pressure against his back. It was like a fly brushing against his skin—annoying, but not worth acknowledging. He groaned under his breath, lips parting slightly as he mumbled.
"Mmm... leave me alone."
Then, there was another tap. Slightly firmer this time.
Mikey made a valiant attempt to ignore it, shifting his weight, adjusting his arms, but keeping his eyes shut tight. Whoever was bothering him clearly had nothing important to say, or so he thought.
POW!
A brutal smack landed square on his face. His head snapped back, his entire body jerking as if he had just been electrocuted. The shock of the hit sent every ounce of sleep packing, his sluggish brain scrambling to process what had just happened.
"Ghh—Ah!" Mikey yelped, clutching his cheek.
"What the hell?!"
Before he could even recover, another heavy smack struck him, this time even harder, right across his face.
His vision blurred from the sheer force of the impact. His head rocked to the side, and for a brief moment, he genuinely wondered if he’d just been hit by a truck.
But no. It was worse. It was a person.
Mikey shot up from his seat so fast he nearly flipped his chair over. His hands flew to his throbbing cheek, his eyes blinking rapidly as he tried to focus on whatever demon had just assaulted him.
And then he saw them.
A group of guys stood around him, their identical uniforms making them look eerily synchronized. Their gazes locked onto him, sharp, unyielding, and filled with utter disgust.
And then, there was the one in front—the guy responsible for rearranging his face.
He stood only a few inches over Mikey, shoulders squared, posture rigid with a huge, or rather, fat physique.
He loomed over Mikey, staring down at him like a predator that had just cornered its prey. There was something about his presence, something about the way his jaw was clenched and his eyes burned with barely restrained hostility, that sent a sharp jolt of awareness through Mikey.
And suddenly, Mikey immediately recognized him. He knew this guy.
No, scratch that. He really knew this guy.
He was the same guy who had been standing beside Son Parker, when he had threatened Aurora.
Which meant, he was an Iron Vipers. He’d been discovered!
