Chapter 84: Going Back To Calsoz.
Ethan held Liora’s hand a moment longer than strictly necessary. The crimson glow faded from
between their fingers, leaving only the faint echo of power hanging in the charged silence.
He finally let go, rolling his sore shoulder and squinting at her. "So... teammates now, huh?"
Liora crossed her arms under the cloak he’d given her, chin tilting upward. "Don’t get sentimental
about it, mortal. You killed me. I’m not exactly sending you a fruit basket."
Ethan snorted. "Please don’t. I’d rather not find a severed head tucked under a pineapple."
A faint smirk tugged at the corner of her lips. "I’m a vampire. I’d be more creative than that."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "Anyway... this is the deal. You’re part of my team now. You help
me with whatever comes next. And trust me—there’s going to be a lot of ’next.’ Monsters,
dungeons, corrupt nobles... you name it."
Liora’s crimson eyes glimmered faintly in the dim dungeon light. "And in return?"
"In return, I’ll help you unlock your full power. And... keep you from getting dusted again,
obviously."
She sighed, brushing a few stray strands of hair behind one pointed ear. "Fine. But if I’m stuck
protecting you mortals, at least make it interesting."
"Oh, don’t worry," Ethan said, turning away. "My life’s practically a disaster magnet."
He started toward the collapsed shelves where Daniel and Reyna lay. Liora followed, shadows
swirling gently around her bare feet despite the cloak now wrapped tightly around her.
They reached Daniel first. To Ethan’s relief, his friend’s eyes were open, though he looked groggy
as hell.
Daniel blinked rapidly, squinting up at Ethan. "Ethan... the hell happened? Is the vampire dead or"
He trailed off the instant he noticed Liora standing beside Ethan. His jaw dropped. "ETHAN,
WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Liora gave him a regal little wave. "Hello, snack."
Ethan threw his hands up. "Okay, okay—everyone calm down."
"CALM DOWN?!" Daniel sputtered, grabbing Ethan by the front of his shirt. "THAT THING TRIED
TO EAT US!"
Liora tilted her head. "Technically, I still might."
"Liora," Ethan snapped. "Not helping."
She rolled her eyes. "Ugh. Fine."
Ethan pried Daniel’s fingers off his shirt. "Listen. She lost. Fair and square. And I made a blood
pact with her. She’s on our side now."
Daniel stared at him like he’d sprouted horns. "A blood pact?! Have you lost your goddamn
mind?!"
"Probably," Ethan admitted. "But that’s beside the point."
Daniel blinked a few times, working his jaw as if trying to chew through the absurdity. Then he
dropped his head forward, sighing into his hands. "Fuck my life..."
Liora looked down at him. "I’m still stronger than you, by the way."
"Great," Daniel groaned. "Love that for me."
Ethan clapped him on the shoulder. "Look—can you stand?"
Daniel nodded weakly. "Yeah... gimme a second."
Together, they moved toward Reyna, who still lay motionless on the ground. Ethan knelt beside
her, touching her shoulder gently. "Reyna. Hey. Wake up."
She let out a low groan, eyelids fluttering. Slowly, she cracked one eye open. "Mmm... why’s it
feel like I got hit by a fuckin’ mountain...?"
Daniel snorted. "Because you kinda did."
Reyna blinked blearily at Liora. "And why’s the vampire bitch wearing Ethan’s cloak?"
Ethan sighed. "Long story. I’ll explain on the way."
Reyna struggled to sit up. Daniel bent down and gently lifted her to her feet. She wobbled, leaning
heavily on him.
Ethan brushed off the dirt from his knees and sheathed Warlord’s Fang. "All right. We’re getting
out of this crypt. We’re heading to Duskwatch City."
Daniel frowned. "Duskwatch? Why there?"
"Because," Ethan said, his voice hardening, "I need to report this whole vampire dungeon mess to
Swordmaster Selene. And the sooner I do it, the better."
Reyna let out a hiss of pain as she tried to straighten up. "I hate that woman’s smug face..."
Liora arched an eyebrow. "She sounds delightful."
Ethan rolled his eyes. "Trust me, she’s not. But she’s my commanding officer. And right now, we
have a lot to explain."
Daniel exhaled heavily, shifting Reyna’s weight to his shoulder. "Fine. Let’s just get the hell out of
here."
They moved as a battered but alive unit through the crumbling corridors. The vampire dungeon
seemed darker and emptier than before—like the shadows themselves were exhaling now that
Liora was no longer bound to its walls.
By the time they reached the surface, the sky was a pale wash of dawn. Mist coiled around the
ruins of the ancient fortress that housed the dungeon’s entrance.
Birds wheeled in lazy arcs overhead, cawing as if unimpressed by the ragged survivors below.
Ethan turned to the others. "All right. You three—go to the inn. Get food. Rest up. I’ll handle
Selene."
Daniel looked horrified. "Alone? Are you insane?"
"Probably," Ethan said again. "But she’d murder all of you with her tongue alone. Trust me. Let me
deal with it."
Reyna groaned, pressing her palm to her forehead. "You’re the crazy one, Ethan. We all know it."
Ethan flashed a grin. "Yeah. But I’m your crazy one."
Liora stared at him, lips twitching. "If she kills you, can I have your sword?"
"NO!" Ethan shouted, already stalking away down the road.
The others watched him go. Daniel let out a breath. "He’s going to get his ass handed to him."
Reyna smirked. "Again."
Meanwhile, Ethan made his way through the streets of Calsoz City. Tall spires of obsidian and
slate rose around him, draped in the red banners of the Swordmaster’s Order.
Merchants were opening their stalls, hawking bread, cloth, and shimmering dusts for mage rituals.
He ignored them all, heading straight for a fortresslike building of dark stone where guards stood
stiff as statues. The Swordmaster’s Hall.
He strode through the main doors, leaving a trail of dried blood across the polished floor.
At the end of a long corridor, an oaken door stood open. Warm lamplight spilled out—and there
she was.
Swordmaster Selene.
She sat behind a massive desk, pen scratching across parchment. Her silver hair fell over one
shoulder, framing eyes sharp as drawn steel.
She looked up as he entered, raising one perfectly sculpted brow. A ghost of a smile touched her
lips.
"Oh... look who finally came back."
Ethan leaned against the doorframe, smirking. "Miss me?"
