Chapter 680: 678, Wedding (Part 6)

Just after helping Meng Yujuan with her bridal veil, there came a knock at the door.

"Yujuan, open the door! I’m here to marry you," Li Hui’s voice, laced with joy, came from outside the door.

Upon hearing this, Meng Yujuan sniffled hard, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill.

"Li Hui, if you want to marry our Yujuan, that’s fine, but have you prepared the red envelopes?"

"There are more than a dozen of us here, and if there aren’t enough red envelopes, we won’t open the door."

"Yeah! If you want to marry our Yujuan, first slide the red envelopes inside, and we’ll open the door if we’re satisfied," Wang Fei and the others walked to the door, shouting to Li Hui outside.

"Luo Shu, I’m a bit nervous," Meng Yujuan turned her head towards Luo Shu. Because she was wearing a veil, she couldn’t see Luo Shu but she felt her presence right beside her.

Luo Shu patted Meng Yujuan on the shoulder, "Don’t be nervous, we’ll be with you." Luo Shu had felt the same mix of emotions—nervousness, anticipation, joy, happiness, excitement...—when she had married Hanmo. It was the feeling of marrying for love.

Li Hui took out the prepared red envelopes, "Just crack the door open a bit, and I’ll hand the red envelopes to you."

The door opened a small gap, and Zhang Qi, with a smile, said to Li Hui outside, "Slide the red envelopes inside so we can check them out. If we’re satisfied, we’ll open the door for you."

Li Hui slipped the red envelopes through the door crack, and his buddies behind him took this chance to push, shoving Li Hui into the room.

"You bunch of rascals!" Zhang Qi took a stack of red envelopes, stepped back a few paces, and laughingly distributed them to everyone present. It was just a formality, a playful hassle, just to add to the atmosphere.

Li Hui’s face was brimming with smiles, his mouth stretched ear to ear.

He walked in front of Meng Yujuan, kneeled on one knee, and handed her a bunch of pink roses, "Juanjuan, please marry me!" This was something he had learned from the last time Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo got married. Although he could not lay a sea of flowers for Yujuan like Lu Hanmo did for Luo Shu, he had also spent a lot of time preparing these flowers, and had even carefully removed the thorns on their stems with a fruit knife.

Meng Yujuan, who had been holding back her tears for a long time, finally let them fall. Yet, on her tear-stained face was a hint of blissful smile, and she reached out to take the roses, "I will!"

Li Hui took out a women’s Gold ring, slipped it onto Meng Yujuan’s finger, stood up, and amidst everyone’s blessings and applause, lifted the veil from Meng Yujuan’s head.

"Brother Hui is truly blessed! Sister-in-law is so beautiful!"

"Li Hui, with such a beautiful bride, give her a kiss!"

"Kiss her! Kiss her!" Li Hui’s buddies clapped their hands, egging him on.

Meng Yujuan’s mother and the elders chuckled merrily. These times were different from theirs; young people had become more open, and it was increasingly common to see young couples holding hands on the street.

Meng Yujuan’s face turned red as a monkey’s butt, shyly looking down at the delicate roses in her hand.

Li Hui chuckled, and buoyed by the crowd’s cheers, he took Meng Yujuan’s chin in his hand, ducked his head, and swiftly pecked her lips, then addressed the crowd, "Are you all satisfied now?"

"Satisfied!" everyone laughed in unison.

Meng Yujuan glared at Li Hui coyly, her face reddening even further. At that moment, her heart overflowed with deep contentment.

After a round of laughter and sweet dumplings, Meng Yujuan’s big aunt instructed Li Hui to carry Meng Yujuan out the door. It was a custom in their village that it was bad luck for the bride’s feet to touch the ground.

Upon exiting the hostel, they saw seven sedans and one truck, specially used to carry the dowry, parked at the entrance.

Aside from the two lead cars, which belonged to the Li and Wu families, respectively, all the other cars were arranged by Luo Shu. She hoped Meng Yujuan would get married in grand style.

Many onlookers gathered on the street, envy, jealousy, and hatred evident on their faces as they beheld such a spectacle.

"This is my first time seeing a wedding like this! Even the Prefectural Magistrate’s family wouldn’t have such a grand affair for their daughter’s wedding, I bet."

"So many sedans, truly impressive!"

"I wonder whose daughter is getting married so well. She’s really lucky."

"Exactly, it’s so frustrating to compare!"

"Hey, look quick! The groom and bride are coming out."

Upon hearing this, the crowd turned their attention unanimously to Li Hui and Meng Yujuan.

"The groom and bride are so handsome! Just like a match made in heaven, a perfect pair!"

"Groom, bride, on such a joyous day you should throw some sweets! Let everyone join in the fun."

It was customary for the groom to prepare sweets when picking up the bride to distribute to the onlookers. Of course, there were some who were particularly stingy, but most would prepare something.

Li Hui, of course, had prepared beforehand and turned to Ma Dong, who was holding a black carry-pouch, "Ma Dong, pass out the sweets to everyone." The pouch contained not only sweets but also a few packs of cigarettes. Some had been distributed when they entered, and now only half a pack was left.

Right away!" Ma Dong responded, reaching into the pouch and scattering a handful of sweets.

The curious onlookers immediately scrambled for them. Grabbing the sweets was also synonymous with grabbing happiness.

Li Hui carried Meng Yujuan into the car, closed the door, then walked around to the other side and got in himself.

As everyone boarded their vehicles, the cars slowly started amid the sound of firecrackers, heading towards the Li family’s home.

The guesthouse wasn’t far from the Li family’s place; it was only a three or four-minute drive.

Li Hui got out of the car and went around to Meng Yujuan’s side again, lifting her up and walking towards the festively decorated house.

After crossing the fire basin, Li Hui finally set Meng Yujuan down.

An elder from Li Hui’s side immediately took a bamboo sieve and held it over the bride’s head, guiding the bride towards the hall.

"Watch the threshold!" reminded the elder as they entered. It was absolutely forbidden for the couple to step on the threshold, as it would bring bad luck.

The hall was already adorned with large red ’happiness’ characters, and there was a festive atmosphere all around.

In the center of the hall, there was a table set up for the ancestors’ worship, with a pair of red candles burning on top, and plates of fruits and pastries neatly arranged on it.

Li Hui and Meng Yujuan approached the altar and bowed three times.

After a series of intricate rituals, Li Hui and Meng Yujuan finally finished paying respects to their parents and elders with tea and were able to return to their bridal chamber. Next, all they needed to do was join the others at the restaurant for the wedding banquet.
