Chapter 664: Six hundred sixty-two, mission out
Luo Shu was cooking with Lu Hanmo in the kitchen when she heard someone knocking. Setting her teacup down, she went to answer it. When Hanmo was present, she seldom had a chance to cook, usually just keeping him company with chatter.
Approaching to open the gate, she saw Guo Moli standing outside.
"Sister-in-law, is there something you need?" Luo Shu asked in a calm voice.
Guo Moli flashed a smile and said, "I came to borrow some vegetables from you. I was supposed to go shopping this afternoon, but it started raining, so I didn’t make it, and oh! The vegetables in your yard are growing so well!"
During this exchange, she didn’t wait for Luo Shu to invite her in and headed straight for the vegetable patch in the yard.
In the Guard’s Members Courtyard, each family had their own designated plot. The land behind the Guard’s Members Building used to be wasteland but was later reclaimed and turned into vegetable gardens.
For those like them who had a yard in their homes, they were indeed fortunate, not needing to go so far for their vegetables could be found right in their own yards.
The Guo family also had their share of land, but it had gone to waste due to lack of attention for too long.
Luo Shu watched as Guo Moli picked vegetables in the garden, displeasure furrowing her brow. This Guo Moli reminded her of Liu Chunhua, whom she hadn’t seen in a long while. Liu Chunhua did it because she was poor and had no other choice, but Guo Moli’s family, she heard, was quite well-off, and yet acted the same way, which was unnecessary.
Guo Moli had gathered a large bunch of rape, as well as some eggplants, green peppers, and cucumbers, "Lu family’s sister, do you have a bamboo basket? Lend me one, and I’ll return it along with the vegetables tomorrow after I do my shopping."
Luo Shu intended to say she didn’t have one, but considering the proximity of their homes and the likelihood of frequent encounters, she went into the house and came out with a bamboo basket. It was just this once; if Guo Moli didn’t come to return it tomorrow, she would have an excuse not to lend her anything in the future.
Guo Moli happily took the bamboo basket, placing her picked vegetables inside, "Lu family’s sister, I will definitely bring you the vegetables and the basket tomorrow morning when I go shopping. I need to head back now, Old Shen is waiting for me to make dinner."
Luo Shu nodded faintly and waited for Guo Moli to leave before closing the gate.
Humming a tune, Guo Moli walked back to her own yard, closed the gate, and went inside the house.
Shen Qingfeng was sitting on the sofa watching TV. Seeing Guo Moli return with a bamboo basket in hand, he knew she had managed to borrow some vegetables, "Don’t forget to return them to her tomorrow."
"Would I ever skimp on something like that?" Guo Moli changed her slippers and carried the basket into the kitchen, "The neighbor’s vegetable patch is really nice; they have just about every vegetable you could want." If the basket could hold more, she would have picked even more vegetables.
"Don’t we have our own land, too? Tomorrow, while you’re in town, go to the seed store and buy some vegetable seeds to plant. It won’t be long before they start growing," Shen Qingfeng said. His wife was quite painstaking despite being petty about things.
"Alright!" Guo Moli placed the basket aside, took out the rape, and began washing it. She planned to stir-fry the rape and make a dish with eggplant and green peppers, then toss a cucumber salad; that should be enough. The vegetables she had picked today would suffice for the two of them for a couple of days. Still, a trip to town was necessary tomorrow to buy eggs and meat; they couldn’t eat only vegetables every day. Although frugal, she was willing to spend money on herself and Old Shen.
Lu Hanmo brought the cooked soup to the table and saw Luo Shu coming in, "We can eat now."
"Alright!" Luo Shu responded, taking a seat at the table.
Lu Hanmo went back to the kitchen, served two bowls of rice, and handed one to Luo Shu, sitting down opposite her, "The man who moved next to us is Shen Qingfeng; he’s from the Shen Family of Liangcheng City and has many wartime achievements, a very capable member of the Guard. He had a chance to be promoted to Centurion Troop Leader, but due to some unpleasant incidents, he was transferred here."
Luo Shu nodded in understanding, "It must be related to his wife, right?"
Lu Hanmo gave Luo Shu an approving look, "If you can’t get along, just ignore them, and make sure you don’t let yourself be mistreated."
"Hmm!" Luo Shu sweetly nodded her head.
After dinner, Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo went into the kitchen to wash dishes together, with Lu Hanmo taking charge of washing and Luo Shu wiping the dishes dry.
"I have a mission tomorrow," Lu Hanmo said.
"Hmm?" Luo Shu was somewhat surprised. It had been a long time since she had seen him take on a mission.
"There’s been a spate of disappearances in An Province lately, and the Guard District dispatched a Centurion Troop to investigate, but more than a dozen soldiers met with disaster," Lu Hanmo said, his expression tinged with sorrow. He had volunteered for this mission; he couldn’t just stand by and watch those soldiers sacrifice themselves for nothing.
"Could it be some kind of evil cult again?" Luo Shu frowned. It was very likely another sect like the Yin Corpse Sect.
"Possibly," Lu Hanmo nodded. He was thinking the same thing.
"Why don’t I go with you?" Luo Shu offered.
Lu Hanmo smiled and shook his head, "I’ll be back soon, be good! Wait for me at home." Shushu was pregnant now; how could he bear to let her go through the hardship with him?
"But I’ll be bored staying at home alone," Luo Shu said, looking at Lu Hanmo, her eyes bright with moisture. She wasn’t worried in the slightest about Hanmo’s strength; she just didn’t want to be apart from him.
"Silly girl!" Lu Hanmo reached out and affectionately flicked Luo Shu’s cute nose, "Then I’ll come back to stay the night." He knew her habits; she was used to sleeping in his arms.
"I’ll just wait here at home for you to come back." She didn’t want him to overexert himself.
Guo Moli wandered around the town’s vegetable market and stopped by the seed station, finally managing to buy everything she needed.
When she got back to the Guard’s Members Courtyard, she saw many of the Guard’s Wives laughing and chatting as they walked outside, which made her curious. It was already too late to go to town for groceries or to take the bus into the city.
"Where are you all going?" Guo Moli approached and stopped three of the Guard’s Wives to ask.
"We’re going to work," one of the Guard’s Wives replied.
"Where do you work?" Guo Moli grew even more curious. Did the Guard District actually arrange jobs for the Guard’s Wives?
"You must be new here, right?" the tall, skinny Guard’s Wife asked with a smile.
"Yes!" Guo Moli nodded.
"No wonder you don’t know, we’re heading to the cake factory to work. The cake factory was founded by Sister-in-law Lu and Sister-in-law Yang together."
"Which Sister-in-law Lu?"
"It’s Deputy Squadron Leader Lu’s wife, Sister-in-law Lu. She’s really impressive, not only a doctor but also a sharp entrepreneur. You have no idea how good our cake factory is; not only is the pay for the workers high, but they also get to eat meat every day. It’s almost time for work, we have to go. We’ll tell you more later."
