Chapter 663: Six hundred sixty-one, got rained on
Qi Hui and the others followed out of the yard. Although Guo Moli had a point, they still felt she had gone too far. They all came from the countryside and knew it wasn’t easy for the workers to earn their hard-earned money.
Sitting down at Luo Shu’s home, Qi Hui still felt somewhat uncomfortable, "I heard Old Shen’s family has some connections and is quite wealthy, so why is his wife so nitpicky over these few bucks?"
"Perhaps the richer people are, the stingier they become," said Fang Jingmei as she sipped her tea. She didn’t have a very good impression of Guo Moli either.
"The best thing would be for the rain to come now and drench her five-drawer cabinet," Wu Yuan said. She had just heard Luo Shu say it might rain today and really hoped it would start soon. She wanted Guo Moli to learn what’s called a Pyrrhic victory.
As if responding to Wu Yuan’s words, the sound of thunder suddenly came from outside.
Guo Moli was humming a tune, tidying up the house. She was in a good mood for having saved five yuan today.
When she heard the thunder outside, she paused, "Could it really be about to rain? This is bad!" What if the five-drawer cabinet got wet in the rain? She couldn’t use it then, could she? No, she had to hurry and find someone to help move the cabinet inside.
With that thought, she quickly dropped the rag in her hand and hurried outside. As soon as she stepped out, large raindrops began to fall, and then the rain grew heavier.
She rushed to the five-drawer cabinet, trying to move it inside, but how could she have the strength to move it by herself? Despite pushing with all her might several times, the cabinet barely budged, let alone being moved inside.
"Darn this weather, why start raining now? My five-drawer cabinet!" Guo Moli’s heart ached as she watched her cabinet getting wet in the rain. Even if the rain stopped, the cabinet would need to be aired out for several days at least. And what if it rained again in the meantime? Now she truly regretted it; if she hadn’t saved those five yuan earlier, this wouldn’t be happening.
"Oi yoi yoi! This rain’s really coming down hard! The five-drawer cabinet next door is gonna suffer."
"Even after the rain stops, that cabinet will need to be dried for a few days. It’ll be hilarious if it rains again. This is so satisfying!" Qi Hui and Wu Yuan said gleefully. They really wanted to see the expression on Guo Moli’s face.
"Luo Shu, how did you know it was going to rain?" Fang Jingmei asked curiously, looking at Luo Shu.
"In recent days, there have been mackerel skies. When these clouds accumulate to a certain extent, they turn into rain-bearing cloud clusters. There’s an old saying: ’Mackerel sky, not rainy, then windy.’ Usually after mackerel clouds form, there will be showers," Luo Shu replied with a smile.
"You’re so knowledgeable; it looks like we really have a lot to learn from you," said Qi Hui in admiration.
"Tell us, what other celestial phenomena can predict tomorrow’s weather?" Wu Yuan asked, looking forward to Luo Shu’s explanation.
Seeing the trio’s eager faces, Luo Shu could only nod in agreement, "Actually there are many types of rain clouds, like hook clouds, which often follow a frontal system, low pressure or trough, indicating approaching rainy weather; or cumulonimbus clouds, which appear like huge forts or towers and are usually seen before a trough, indicating unstable air and typically followed by thunderstorms in about 8–10 hours. Apart from these, there are pileus clouds, fractus clouds, cumulus clouds, stratus clouds, and so on, all indicating impending rain."
The three of them listened with great interest, interjecting with questions from time to time.
Luo Shu explained patiently, and before they knew it, the rain outside had stopped.
Guo Moli looked at the five-drawer cabinet with pain in her heart. Although she ultimately covered it with a raincoat, the cabinet was still thoroughly drenched.
The courtyard door was pushed open, and Shen Qingfeng walked in from outside. He looked at the five-drawer cabinet placed outside with some surprise, "Why wasn’t this moved inside?"
"I..." Guo Moli really didn’t know what to say.
Shen Qingfeng stepped forward, opened the cabinet to check the inside, and shook his head, "It looks like it’s going to take several days to dry out, water got inside. What exactly happened?"
"The workers bumped the cabinet, and then there was some conflict, so it wasn’t moved inside," Guo Moli could only say vaguely.
Shen Qingfeng frowned, "It couldn’t be because you were trying to save that five bucks, right?" He understood his wife’s character somewhat, she was so frugal with others that she’d even split a penny in two if she could, except when it came to him and herself.
Guo Moli kept her head down and said nothing. She really regretted it this time!
"I really don’t know what to say to you. Our home situation isn’t bad, so why do you need to save that money?" Shen Qingfeng knew she was doing it for the good of the household. But sometimes, he really couldn’t accept it.
When he was working in the previous Guard District, it was because of his wife’s bad habit that they offended many people. If it weren’t for the family’s background, he might have been transferred to an even poorer place.
"I just wanted to save more money! You have two older brothers above you, we won’t inherit much from the family assets, and if we have children in the future, won’t we have to take care of their living expenses?" Guo Moli spoke more and more confidently, her conviction growing stronger.
Shen Qingfeng helplessly shook his head, "It’s alright to save money, but don’t take advantage of others, especially the family next door, okay?" He gestured toward Luo Shu’s home with a warning tone.
"I got it," Guo Moli nodded somewhat impatiently.
"Get along well with the Guard’s Wife here. If you act like you did before, you can just go back to Liangcheng City," Shen Qingfeng said sternly. He liked her, but he valued his career more. He couldn’t allow her to ruin his good prospects.
"I know!" Guo Moli looked at the five-drawer cabinet with distress, then turned and walked into the house. Shen Qingfeng was unaware of the cost of daily necessities; if she weren’t careful with money, where would all their savings come from?
Entering the kitchen, Guo Moli remembered that she had forgotten to go to town to buy groceries that day; other than some rice and flour left by the previous residents, there was only oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar. Yet, this fact pleased her quite a bit, as it was another expense she could save on.
"Qingfeng, I forgot to buy groceries. How about I borrow some from next door for now, and we’ll return it to them tomorrow?" Guo Moli said as she stepped out of the kitchen. They couldn’t just eat plain rice without any dishes.
"I’ll borrow it," said Shen Qingfeng. If her bad habit caused offense again, that would be the end of it.
"Let me go. I’ve met the younger sister of the Lu family before, and we had a few words and talked quite happily," Guo Moli said, already stepping out of the house.
