Chapter 621: Six hundred nineteen, weed out

"Mm-hmm!" Luo Shu nodded with a smile.

"Sometimes I really feel like I’m in a dream, watching ’Love to Eat Cake’ grow step by step, and grow so fast, too. I’m honestly a bit scared, scared that this is all just a dream within a dream," Zhang Xiaoling sighed. The closer she got to her dream, the more surreal it felt to her.

"When you feel like that, you could pinch yourself, or even bite yourself," teased Luo Shu with a laugh. She had felt the same way, especially when she was first reborn and during the days when she first met Hanmo. She had always felt a sense of fear at losing what she had gained.

It wasn’t long before the village chief came out of the Town Official Residence. Seeing Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling, he walked over happily and announced, "I’ve already spoken to the head of the town, and he said it should take about three days for the approval to go through."

"Chief, thank you!" Zhang Xiaoling said joyfully.

"Thank me for what? Are you two heading to the village today?" The chief reached for his tobacco pouch, then remembering that smoking was prohibited in the Government Office, he reluctantly put his hand down.

"Luo Shu’s heading over there, while I need to stop by the factory. Luo Shu, are you sure you’ll be okay by yourself?" Zhang Xiaoling still seemed a bit uneasy.

"No problem, you go ahead," Luo Shu replied with a smile.

"Alright, then I’ll be off." Zhang Xiaoling waved at the two of them and left. She was now going back to share the good news with everyone. They’d all be delighted to hear it.

Luo Shu brought her gaze back and said to the village chief, "Let’s also get going."

"Alright!" The village chief gave a nod and walked out with Luo Shu. He was eager to leave that place, too—staying in a non-smoking area was suffocating for him.

Just as the car entered the village’s narrow path, Luo Shu could see from afar Wang Jinhui and others standing outside the cattle shed, smoking and chatting.

There were also a few villagers from Caozhuang Village standing to the side, watching the commotion.

"Are those the carpenters you hired? How are they so quick? They’ve even got all the tiles and bricks ready," the village chief remarked with disbelief, noticing the tall pile of bricks and tiles by Wang Jinhui and the others.

"They’re in the construction business, and these materials are all readily available," Luo Shu said as she parked the car on the side of the road and got out.

The village chief also got out of the car, having learned how to open the door from previous experience.

"Director!" Wang Jinhui immediately greeted Luo Shu as he saw her.

Luo Shu nodded with a smile, "I’m troubling you again this time."

"It’s my honour to serve the director," Wang Jinhui said with a smile. An opportunity like this wasn’t something others could even ask for.

"Have you looked at the cattle shed? Do you have any thoughts?" asked Luo Shu.

"The shed is damaged too severely, many parts are already rotten, especially the roof beams—several are broken. Just fixing it certainly won’t do. I think it needs to be torn down and rebuilt," Wang Jinhui shared his thoughts.

Luo Shu readily agreed, his suggestion fitting her own plans. She turned to look at the village chief, "Chief, we’ll tear down the cattle shed and rebuild it as it was. That should be permissible, right?" Collective properties were only regulated in terms of not being privately built; there was no rule against tearing them down for renovation.

After some thought, the village chief nodded, "As long as the original structure isn’t destroyed, it should be fine." Luo Shu had paid ten years’ worth of rent upfront and was planning to purchase the land behind the cattle shed, filling the village’s accounts with a substantial sum. With this money, the village could start doing some real good for the villagers.

Understanding, Luo Shu nodded, "We’ll make sure to rebuild it just the way it was." Workshops and residences were different; residences needed to be beautifully comfortable, but workshops just needed to be large.

"Okay, then you all get busy. I’ll head back to the village office. If there’s anything, just come and find me." The village chief patted his tobacco pouch into his palm and began smoking as he made his way to the village office.

Luo Shu looked away and turned to Wang Jinhui, "Besides this cattle shed, I’d also like to build a few factory buildings on that empty land behind it, similar to those of Tenglong Group."

"Yes!" responded Wang Jinhui. He had already looked over the plot of land behind, and it was spacious enough to accommodate four or five factory buildings without any problems.

"Sister-in-Law, we were sent over by the team leader to help you clear the weeds," said a woman from the group nearby.

Luo Shu turned to look. These four villagers had been here all along, and she had thought they were just onlookers. The efficiency of Caozhuang Village was quite impressive; they had already arranged for people so quickly. Earlier, while the village chief and she went to the town, the matter had been handed over to the team leader for coordination.

"Thank you all for your help," Luo Shu said, smiling and nodding to the group.

"Could I ask how much you would be paying us?" the same woman who had spoken earlier inquired. They had agreed mainly for the money.

"Five yuan per person," Luo Shu answered.

Hearing this, all four of them brightened up. In the factories, a worker’s monthly wage was only about thirty to forty yuan; earning five yuan in a single day was quite the windfall. If only they could have such luck every day.

"Then we’ll start clearing the weeds now. We’ll make sure to do a thorough job, to your satisfaction."

"Will we get paid after we finish clearing the weeds?"

Luo Shu took out twenty yuan and distributed it amongst the four of them.

The four villagers happily accepted the money and immediately headed into the cattle shed. They passed through to the other side and began clearing the weeds with sickles in hand.

They worked efficiently. In less than an hour, the area behind the cattle shed was cleared of all weeds.

"Sister-in-Law, if you ever need help, just find me. I live in the second house from the east side of the village, and everyone calls me Aunt Liu. You can call me that too," Aunt Liu said cheerfully. Luo Shu had paid so promptly, and she wished Luo Shu would need her help daily.

"I live next to Aunt Liu’s house. Just call me Big Uncle Yang from now on," Big Uncle Yang said with a smile.

"I’m Aunt Li."

"And I’m Aunt Zhang," the other two also introduced themselves.

Luo Shu politely nodded to the four of them with a slight smile, then looked at the place that had been cleared. It was roughly four to five hundred square meters, about the size of a basketball court.

By the clearing was a small river, and the water in it was very clean. Caozhuang Village didn’t have tap water or wells, so the river served as their primary water source for washing vegetables, laundry, drinking... basically everything.
