Chapter 618: Six hundred sixteen, negotiate
The sky gradually darkened, and the villagers who had been busy in the fields shouldered their tools and returned home, getting ready for tonight’s dinner.
Along with the sound of "sizzling!" the village chief’s voice emanated from the loudspeakers, resonating through the entire Caozhuang Village, "Fellow villagers of Caozhuang Village, I have an announcement to make. Our village’s cattle shed has been leased out today, so please make sure to clear out your belongings from the cattle shed tonight."
"Someone actually rented that old cattle shed?"
"I just got home, and now I have to start being busy again."
"Where are we supposed to put all our stuff once we move it out?" the villagers complained while preparing dinner. They planned to check out the cattle shed after their meal, to see if others were moving their belongings as well.
More and more villagers gathered outside the cattle shed, with the village chief directing everyone to move the firewood and wheat straw to the temporary storage at the west side granary.
"Xiao Liuzi, your family has the most stuff, so you better hurry up and move it. Let’s all help out so we can clear out the cattle shed tonight," the village chief instructed the crowd. He believed the Guard’s Wife wouldn’t lie to them. Once the other party arrived tomorrow morning and saw that the cattle shed was tidied up, they might be so pleased that they decide to sign on for a few more years. Fifty a month wasn’t a small amount.
"Village chief, who is renting our cattle shed?" one villager asked out of curiosity.
"I know, it’s a cake factory," replied a villager who knew the situation.
"Is it the same kind of cakes sold in the small shops in town? Oh my god, those are so delicious!"
"I wonder if the factory will hire workers once it opens here?"
"It would be great if they did; then we would have the chance to be workers, too."
"Exactly, I’ve heard that workers at the cake factory earn a lot, around thirty or forty a month! My aunt’s cousin’s daughter works at a cake factory. I heard they even get bonuses during the holidays."
"That’s wonderful!" Everyone’s faces showed envy and longing. Thinking that they might have the opportunity to become workers too, the previously lackluster villagers suddenly found themselves full of energy, no longer caring if the items belonged to them or not, and began moving things out.
Luo Shu arrived at the cattle shed with Zhang Xiaoling, and seeing the previously packed cattle shed now empty, she couldn’t help but smile with satisfaction. The village chief of Caozhuang Village was indeed an active person.
Zhang Xiaoling’s eyes sparkled as she looked around the cattle shed, her face filled with a happy smile. "With the factory moving here, even if we get several times more orders, it won’t be a problem."
"Later, we’ll discuss with the village chief about buying the vacant lot behind the cattle shed to build a few workshops," said Luo Shu. She already had plans in mind; although the cattle shed was spacious, it would not suffice when ’Love to Eat Cake’ truly expanded and had networks throughout Yan Country. Therefore, building workshop buildings was part of the plan.
"Mhm!" Zhang Xiaoling nodded, excited. In that moment, she could almost see the bright future of ’Love to Eat Cake.’
"Let’s go to the village office; the village chief is probably waiting for us," Luo Shu said with a smile. The haste with which he had cleared the area showed he was someone of an impatient nature.
The village chief paced back and forth in the office, his heart a mix of happy, excited, worried, and anxious feelings.
He stepped to the entrance of the office and peered outside, wondering, "Why haven’t they arrived? They didn’t decide not to come, did they?" If they didn’t come, then all his efforts would’ve been for nothing, right?
"Chief, don’t worry, they’ll definitely come," the head of the Guard comforted him, feeling dizzy watching the chief’s incessant pacing, which also filled him with tension and unease.
"Okay!" the village chief replied, getting ready to walk back inside when he spotted two graceful figures approaching from outside. Slapping his thigh joyously, he exclaimed, "Finally, they’ve come!"
He hurriedly greeted them with a smile, "Here you are! Come in, take a seat." Now that they had arrived, things were on track.
Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling smiled and nodded to the village chief, "Village chief, sorry to keep you waiting!"
"I’ve also just arrived; please, have a seat. Little Qi, hurry up and make tea for our two guests," the village chief cheerfully ushered Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling into the office, calling out to the Guard at the same time.
"Please, take a seat!" the village chief warmly invited Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling.
After sitting down, Luo Shu took out an introduction letter from her bag and handed it to the village chief, "Village chief, please take a look at this introduction letter."
The village chief took the letter and saw that it was issued by the Guard, complete with the official stamp of the Guard. "No problem! How long would you like to lease it for?" he asked, his face full of expectancy. He was hoping for a three-year lease, otherwise five years would be ideal. The longer the lease, the happier he would be.
"We’d like to lease it for ten years, would that be okay?" asked Zhang Xiaoling.
"Ten years?!" The village chief’s voice nearly broke with excitement. He couldn’t have misheard, could he?
"Yes, and besides that, we would like to buy the vacant land behind the cattle shed; we plan to build a few factory buildings there, is that okay?" asked Zhang Xiaoling. Since Luo Shu was pregnant, she naturally didn’t want to burden her, so she would take full responsibility for things on this end in the future.
"What?!" The village chief was nearly knocked senseless by this sudden stroke of fortune.
"We also want to buy the vacant land behind the cattle shed, as we’re planning to build a few factory buildings there; do you think that’s possible?" Zhang Xiaoling repeated.
"Yes! Yes! Of course!" the village chief nodded vigorously. He was thrilled; that land, being near the river and overgrown with weeds, was practically useless. If they wanted to buy it, he was naturally overjoyed. It meant another source of income for the village.
"Village chief, we want to buy that land; are there any procedures needed to build there?" Zhang Xiaoling asked.
The village chief took a puff on his pipe, calming his excitement before saying, "You’ll need to submit an application; building a house is the same, requiring approval." Land and houses differ even though both belong to the collective; while collective houses can’t be sold, land can be as long as it’s approved. That’s why collective houses can’t be torn down to build private ones, but as long as land is approved, villagers can build on it.
