Chapter 598: Five hundred and ninety-six, campsite
Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo, hand in hand, walked down the mountain.
By the time they reached mid-mountain, the civilians had already been evacuated, but a tall figure dressed in military green and a tiny one were sitting there, not having left.
"Little sister, listen to uncle, shall we go to the camp and wait for sister?" He Bing was patiently coaxing the little girl. They had just sent someone to check the mountain, and there was nobody there.
"I won’t. Sister promised when she comes down from the mountain she’ll come to see me," the little girl stubbornly said.
"Uncle has already sent someone to check the mountain, and there’s simply nobody there," He Bing said with some helplessness. He didn’t want to shatter her hopes, but apart from the bottomless cliffs, there truly was nobody on the mountain. Waiting meaninglessly like this was pointless.
"Sister promised me, I believe in sister," the little girl said, looking at He Bing with a serious expression.
With a helpless shake of his head and a sigh, He Bing said, "Uncle will wait with you for another half hour, okay? If sister still hasn’t come down by then, we should leave. Otherwise, once it gets dark, the road will be hard to navigate." He didn’t know what else to say to the little girl.
Having been there for over two hours, all the civilians who needed to be evacuated were gone, and those who had died had also been properly buried. Only this little girl remained, and though everyone had tried to persuade her, and he himself had spoken with her for a full half hour, she remained stubbornly there.
The little girl said nothing, her gaze fixed unblinkingly on the mountaintop.
With a helpless shake of his head, He Bing sighed.
"Sister!" When she saw Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo descending from the mountain, the little girl’s eyes suddenly brightened, and a beaming smile broke across her face as she ran towards them. She had known sister wouldn’t deceive her.
"Instructor Lu!" Seeing who it was, He Bing was shocked! He hadn’t expected that the people the little girl was waiting for were Lu Hanmo and Luo Shu.
He belonged to Drum Mountain Training Camp in Cloud City, and he had once been trained by Instructor Lu. Ever since Instructor Lu had been transferred, he hadn’t seen him in a very long time and didn’t expect to encounter him here.
With a happy smile on his face, He Bing quickly walked over to them. Standing before Lu Hanmo, he straightened his body and saluted, "Instructor Lu!"
Lu Hanmo nodded with a smile, "Go to the camp and see everyone." He Bing was one of his former subordinates and a brother who had shared hardships with him. Drum Mountain Training Camp was the one he had spent the most time in, and it had been so long since he had seen everyone, he truly missed them.
"Sister!" The little girl said happily, taking Luo Shu’s hand.
"Why didn’t you go down the mountain with everyone?" Luo Shu thought she had already left with the others.
"I was waiting for sister. Didn’t sister say she would come to see me when she came down the mountain?" the little girl asked, blinking her large eyes at Luo Shu.
Luo Shu smiled and ruffled the little girl’s hair, "What would you do if sister didn’t come down?"
"I would wait here for sister," the little girl said with a smile. She believed in sister, knowing she would never lie to her.
Looking at the little girl’s earnest eyes, Luo Shu shook her head helplessly, "Let’s go back to the camp with uncle for now."
"Okay!" the little girl said cheerfully. She would go wherever sister went.
Lu Hanmo handed the little girl over to He Bing, picked up Luo Shu, and the three of them, along with the child, quickly ran towards the camp. It was no short distance to the camp, and if they didn’t hurry, they wouldn’t reach the camp before darkness fell. This was also why He Bing and the others arrived so late.
He Bing, looking at Lu Hanmo who was carrying Luo Shu and running ahead, felt envious. Both were running, but his pants were already splattered with mud, while Lu Hanmo’s pants remained spotlessly clean, almost as if he was stepping not on muddy ground but on flat land. Plus, Lu Hanmo was carrying an adult, while he was only carrying a child—the difference was not small.
As darkness was about to set, the four of them finally reached the camp.
The soldiers, upon seeing Lu Hanmo and Luo Shu, rushed towards them with excited faces.
"Instructor Lu, how did you end up here?"
"Instructor Lu, why don’t you ever visit the training camp again? We’ve missed you so much."
"We heard you and Sister-in-Law got married, we haven’t even had your wedding candy."
"Exactly, you have to make up for that."
"And we’re waiting to have a full-month celebration for Sister-in-Law’s baby," the soldiers chimed in, each one’s face filled with excitement and joy.
"Great! When Sister-in-Law gives birth, I’ll come to Cloud City with her and treat you all to a full-month drink," Lu Hanmo said with a cheerful smile.
After reuniting with everyone, Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo settled down in the camp. The rescue operation was nearing its end, and early the next morning, there would be planes to transport some of the wounded and supplies back to Cloud City.
There were too many injured civilians; with the current medical facilities, it was impossible to meet the needs of so many wounded.
Luo Shu looked at the little girl sleeping next to her, already asleep, and pondered how to arrange her future appropriately. If she weren’t pregnant and so busy, she could have taken care of one more with no problem.
But she and Hanmo had agreed that she would accompany him on missions. If it were like the last time and they left for a year and a half, who would take care of this little girl? It seemed she needed to find her a suitable family.
A vision of Zhao Aishu suddenly flashed through her mind, and Luo Shu’s eyes brightened, a smile curving her lips. Godfather and Godmother had never had children; she wondered if they had any plans to adopt? Since they would pass Cloud City on their way back, why not ask Godmother what she thought?
As the sky barely brightened, the chatter of people rang outside, and the camp, which had been quiet for the night, once again buzzed with activity.
Accompanied by Lu Hanmo, Luo Shu went to the medical team’s area of the camp. They arrived the previous night when it was already dark, so they hadn’t come to see it but had brought over some medicine for someone to deliver instead.
Luo Shu had labeled those medicines. Though they couldn’t heal the wounded instantly, they could regulate their internal injuries, allowing the critically injured to slowly regain their vitality.
Entering the medical tent, they saw it was filled with injured people. Doctors and nurses were constantly busy. Several of the severely wounded civilians were in deep comas, and from their faint breathing, it was evident that they could lose their lives at any moment.
Seeing such a situation, Luo Shu’s eyebrows immediately furrowed. Clearly, these wounded had not taken the medicine she had sent over.
