Chapter 592: Five hundred ninety, accident
Shen Anning gave an awkward smile, "Okay, I’ll call another nurse for you."
She turned her head and glared fiercely at Mo Shaoze before shouting to a nurse not too far away: "Xiao Xia, come over and help this uncle with his bandaging." She knew that as long as Mo Shaoze was around, she couldn’t control her emotions.
A young nurse quickly rushed over to take over Shen Anning’s work.
Shen Anning stepped aside and saw that Mo Shaoze followed her, she said through gritted teeth, "What exactly do you want to do?"
Mo Shaoze smiled and extended a talisman to Shen Anning, "This is for you." He truly didn’t want anything bad to happen to her.
Shen Anning glanced at the talisman in Mo Shaoze’s hand and frowned, "Mo Shaoze, don’t you find that you’re being very boring?" She couldn’t believe he would trust such things.
"Don’t underestimate it. My safe return this time was all thanks to it. Take it, trust me!" Mo Shaoze looked at Shen Anning with an earnest expression. Although the talismans he used were of a high level, he believed in Luo Shu—anything he got from her was definitely of the finest quality.
He didn’t know where Luo Shu got these talismans from, but he was certain that Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo were not ordinary people now. Since he started practicing the cultivation technique given to him by Lu Hanmo, he had felt changes in himself. His movements were sharper than before, and he was faster.
Shen Anning looked at Mo Shaoze, and seeing the serious glint in his phoenix eyes, knew he wasn’t joking. She reached out and took the talisman from his hand. Although she didn’t believe in these things, she accepted it for his rare seriousness. After all, carrying this one little thing wouldn’t be a burden.
"You must keep it safe," Mo Shaoze instructed.
Shen Anning rolled her eyes, "I know." She was slightly taken aback by his seriousness—it wasn’t like him.
"I need to go rescue others somewhere else. Don’t worry about me, okay!" Mo Shaoze winked playfully at Shen Anning and walked toward the soldiers, who were ready to set out.
"As if I would worry about you! Stop being so full of yourself!" Shen Anning yelled back at Mo Shaoze, angry again. That right there was the true nature of that jerk.
"Hahaha..." Mo Shaoze’s hearty laughter was his response to Shen Anning.
Shen Anning bit her lip in frustration, looking at the talisman in her hand and feeling the urge to throw it away. But eventually, she resisted and stuffed the talisman forcefully into her pocket.
Liu Yufei looked at the talismans in his hand for a long while and decided to distribute them to everyone. Since they were from Luo Shu to Mo Shaoze, they shouldn’t be bad. Whether they worked or not, they could serve as a psychological comfort.
Clapping his hands, Liu Yufei called out to the doctors present, "Everyone, please come and get a peace charm from me."
The medical team looked at Liu Yufei with disbelief.
"Doctor Liu, you believe in this stuff?"
"I don’t want such things. These are relics of feudal society, only tolerated nowadays because policies have relaxed. Just a few years ago, possession of these could have led to detention and public criticism."
"We are medical practitioners. We should believe in science."
"Doctor Liu, you better keep them for yourself."
Liu Yufei’s expression was somewhat embarrassed as he glanced at the talismans in his hand, "The soldiers took some too. Are you sure no one wants them?"
"No, thanks," the crowd shook their heads. Regardless of what others thought, they were firm in not believing in these things.
With no choice, Liu Yufei nodded reluctantly, tucked away his own talisman, and walked out of the tent. He wanted to return the extra talismans to Mo Shaoze; if nobody wanted them, he couldn’t force them.
Stepping out of the tent, he couldn’t find Mo Shaoze anywhere. After asking around, he learned that Mo Shaoze had headed out to lead another rescue operation with the soldiers.
Shaking his head, Liu Yufei stuffed the remaining talismans into his pocket.
With his team of soldiers, Mo Shaoze reached a rather distant village, which was in a situation similar to the last one they had visited.
Some of them were tasked to move the affected villagers to safety, while Mo Shaoze led the remaining soldiers into the village.
As they conducted their search, a heavy rain suddenly began to pour, making the search even more challenging. Moreover, such a downpour increased the risk of a landslide. But they couldn’t leave; if they retreated now, those waiting for rescue would lose all hope.
The relentless rain turned the already muddy roads into a treacherous mess. The soldiers were slipping at nearly every step, and the constant pelting of rain on their faces blurred their vision.
But no one gave up. They carefully searched every place where there might be survivors.
Watching the unceasing rain, everyone in the camp was filled with anxiety. They all stared nervously at the only road leading to the site, hoping fervently for the safe return of their comrades.
After a thorough search, Mo Shaoze’s team found four injured victims in the collapsed houses. They quickly carried the wounded on their backs, making their way back to the camp.
However, because of the rain, they couldn’t even maintain their pace—walking itself was cumbersome.
Struggling toward the camp, the path became particularly difficult as they approached a stretch of mountains.
Gasping for breath, Ma Furan, with an injured little girl on his back, looked back at the soldiers behind him, "Keep it up, everyone... We will soon..."
Before he could finish, the sight before him turned his face pale, "Zhang Zhihua, get out of the way!" he screamed hysterically.
Even as he shouted, the giant tree on the mountain was already falling, heading straight for Zhang Zhihua.
The soldiers, alerted by Ma Furan’s shout, quickly turned to see the peril of Zhang Zhihua, who was following at the rear.
Zhang Zhihua, hearing Ma Furan’s cries, had no time to react. He watched helplessly as the tree toppled toward him. The muddy road had trapped his feet, making it impossible to move even if he wanted to escape.
Pain and sorrow filled the soldiers’ eyes; nothing was more agonizing than watching a comrade die right before them.
Zhang Zhihua closed his eyes in despair, yet after a long wait, the anticipated pain did not come. Confused, he opened his eyes and looked at the stunned faces around him, "What’s going on?"
