Chapter 566: Five hundred sixty-four, regret
Zhou Mudan walked to the door of one of the houses and gently knocked on the courtyard gate.
"Who’s there?" a slightly elderly voice asked from inside, accompanied by the sound of approaching footsteps.
Before long, the courtyard door was opened.
The door was opened by an old woman who, upon seeing the group of people outside, seemed a bit surprised, "Who are you looking for?" She didn’t recognize anyone; they must have the wrong house.
"Auntie, we’ve come to ask you about something. Do you know where that haunted house is?" Zhou Mudan asked the old woman with a smile.
"That would be the one down the alley with the big vermilion doors, looking quite grand. The house looks bright and cheerful since it’s been renovated; the eerie feeling is gone. Even when you come back at night, it feels like daytime," the old woman explained with a smile.
Before, she used to run past that place every time she came back from the market and would never dare to walk by at night. But now, passing by didn’t give the same sensation anymore; instead, it felt quite comfortable, like being caressed by warm wind, making her feel relaxed. It seemed that the place was so feared previously because of the terrible stories people told, causing illusions.
"That can’t be right, can it? How is such a drastic change possible?" Zhou Mudan found the truth hard to accept. What had she missed?
The other Guard’s Wives also looked worried and upset. They hadn’t expected Zhou Yan and the others to be telling the truth, and they deeply regretted it now!
"Shall we go inside the house and have a look?" Zhou Mudan still wasn’t ready to give up. Even if the outside had changed, the inside probably hadn’t changed much.
The Guard’s Wives nodded in agreement. Since they were already there, naturally, they wanted to take a look.
They arrived at the house to find the courtyard gate wide open.
Approaching the entrance, the Guard’s Wives peeked inside and were immediately stunned by the beauty within! Was this really the so-called haunted house? It was more like a garden residence of an official family from ancient times!
"Why have all you Sister-in-Laws come here?" Luo Shu’s voice came from behind them.
The Guard’s Wives turned around to find Luo Shu standing there with a beaming smile.
"We heard this place was beautiful and wanted to come take a look."
"Yes, it’s really gorgeous inside!"
"We also wanted to see the cake-making machine. They say that thing makes cake baking so much easier."
"I heard from Zhou Yan and the others that they’ve already hired enough people," the Guard’s Wives murmured amongst themselves.
Luo Shu nodded and smiled, "Please come in and sit for a while, Sister-in-Laws." They all lived in the same compound and, since they were here, of course, she should invite them in.
"Okay!" Hearing Luo Shu’s invitation, the Guard’s Wives were delighted and hurriedly stepped into the courtyard. They had always wanted to take a look inside but felt too shy to go in on their own.
"Those two rooms over there are where we make the cakes. Go ahead and have a look," Luo Shu said, pointing to two rooms on the right.
"Alright!" The Guard’s Wives smiled and nodded, heading towards the two rooms.
Walking into the room, they saw it was very spacious. Packaged cakes were placed against the wall. Several unfamiliar young girls were chatting and laughing, sitting beside a long bench, busy with packaging cakes.
Upon seeing strangers enter, the girls all glanced over.
"Who are you?" one of the girls asked.
"We’re Sister-in-Laws from the same compound as Zhou Yan and the others," Wang Yuying answered a bit bitterly. It should have been them packaging here.
"So, you’re the Guard’s Wives! Team Leader Zhou and the others are in the next room," the girl said with a smile.
The guards’ wives exchanged glances, regret deep in their eyes. But who could they blame? It was they themselves who had forsaken the opportunity.
When Wang Fei and the others arrived at the house Luo Shu had bought, they were stunned by the scenery in the courtyard. It was even more beautiful than the houses in Cloud City. They had been prepared to stay in a guesthouse, as there was no way so many of them could squeeze into one room with Luo Shu and his wife, nor would there have been enough space.
Luo Shu led everyone to the backyard and helped them settle into their rooms.
"Luo Shu, this place is just too beautiful, isn’t it? It’s like a garden."
"Especially that Purple Lotus; it’s the first time I’ve seen one."
"How could the owner bear to sell such a beautiful house?"
Luo Shu smirked, "You know, this place used to be a famously haunted house! Are you scared?"
"Even if I were, I wouldn’t care. If haunted houses looked this beautiful, I’d rather live with a ghost."
"Uh-huh!" everyone laughed and agreed.
"Luo Shu, do you plan to buy a house every time you move to a new place?"
"Of course not! Buying this place was a coincidence; I bought it because it looked similar to the houses in Cloud City," Luo Shu said with a smile.
"You must have spent quite a bit on this house, right?" Zhang Qi asked. Her family lived in a courtyard house inherited from her ancestors, so she had a particular fondness for such ancient architecture. When she graduated and started making money, she planned to buy her own courtyard house in Jinchen. Who knows, maybe the house’s value would increase in the future.
Luo Shu smiled and pursed her lips, "Take a guess!"
"Given the size of it, at least five or six thousand, right?" Although the Northwest was poor, the house was indeed very nice; even five or six thousand would be worth it.
"I think that’s about the right price too."
Luo Shu smiled and stretched out her hand, making an eight with her fingers.
"Eight thousand!" In their view, that price was still acceptable.
Luo Shu shook her head, still smiling.
"Could it be eighty thousand?!" Everyone looked at Luo Shu with disbelief. Even someone with money wouldn’t spend it like that. Could she have gone crazy with pregnancy?
Luo Shu gave everyone a dismissive glance, smiling, "Do you really think pregnancy made me dumb? It was eight hundred."
"What? Just eight hundred!"
"Spill it, how did you coerce or tempt the owner to sell such a good house to you for the price of cabbage?"
Luo Shu rolled her eyes, speechless, "I wasn’t joking with you just now; this place really was a haunted house originally, and I renovated it to become what it is now."
"But you’ve been back for just over half a month, right? Your speed is way too fast."
"Are there any more houses like this? Get me a dozen."
After joking around with everyone for a while, Luo Shu said, "Let’s go out to eat. I know a restaurant that serves delicious food, and I’ll take you to try it out." She had been back for over half a month and hadn’t visited Grandpa Ning yet, so it was a good opportunity to do so.
"You’re pregnant now, so you’d better not go out too much. If something happened to the baby, we couldn’t bear the responsibility," Meng Yujuan said, looking at Luo Shu’s belly with concern.
Wang Fei nodded in agreement, "We came to see you, not to cause you trouble. Let’s just make something simple at home."
