Chapter 558: Five hundred and fifty six, hearsay
Luo Shu smiled and walked towards the alley exit.
Seeing Luo Shu return, Zhang Xiaoling greeted her, "Luo Shu, have you taken care of everything on your end?" She had been too busy yesterday to step out of the house at all.
"Everything has been taken care of," Luo Shu said with a smile.
"I’m sorry! It was Sister-in-law Jiang who asked me where the house was being put up, and I told her. I didn’t know that the Guard’s Wives would make such a fuss," Zhang Xiaoling said guiltily, looking at Luo Shu.
"It’s okay!" Luo Shu said with a laugh and a shake of her head. She naturally wouldn’t take such matters to heart.
Zhang Xiaoling bit her lip and hesitated for a moment before saying, "Also, those Guard’s Wives, once they knew about the situation with the house, most of them were unwilling to go, only a few brave ones were willing."
"If there aren’t enough people, we’ll just hire more," Luo Shu said with a smile. The town had so many residents, finding a few workers was easy. Becoming a worker these days was something countless commoners hoped for. If there was a chance to work in a factory, who knows how many would fight for the opportunity.
When Zhang Xiaoling heard that Luo Shu didn’t mind, she also felt relieved. As long as Luo Shu wasn’t angry with her, all was well. "I’ll do as you say," she said. Although she also felt a bit scared of that place, Luo Shu had made up her mind, and so she would firmly stand by Luo Shu’s side. Without Luo Shu, where would she be today?
"Are there many orders for tomorrow?" Luo Shu asked with a smile.
"Yes, loads! Everyone is busy, and I should get back to it too," Zhang Xiaoling said, smiling at the thought of business. They had plenty of orders every day, and her only worry was that the space was too small. She hoped that Luo Shu’s place would be ready soon.
"How much is left?" Luo Shu inquired.
"The orders for tomorrow are a hundred and fifty catties, and we’ve only done thirty catties so far," Zhang Xiaoling replied. She was ready to work through the night.
"I’ll go back and make fifty catties for you, and when it’s three in the afternoon, have someone come over to transport the cakes," Luo Shu offered.
"Can you manage all by yourself?" Zhang Xiaoling asked, astonished. They were many people making a hundred catties, and here she was making half of that alone. Could she really keep up?
"Don’t worry!" Luo Shu smiled and stepped towards her own home.
Luo Shu’s cake-making speed was naturally much faster than anyone else’s. Not only could she bake in the kitchen, but she could also do it concurrently in the space. In less than two hours, she had finished all the cakes.
She looked up at the time; it was just shy of one o’clock.
"Knock, knock, knock!" There was a knocking at the door.
Luo Shu was somewhat surprised, she raised her eyebrows and went to open the courtyard door.
She had thought it might be the Guard’s Wives coming early to pick up the cakes, but to her surprise, it was Qi Hui and Wu Yuan outside the door.
"We were just passing by with nothing to do and decided to come have a chat with you. You don’t mind us dropping by, do you?" Qi Hui asked with a smile. She knew Luo Shu wasn’t the sort who would mind.
"Why, certainly! Sisters-in-law, please come in!" Luo Shu said with a smile, stepping aside to let the two of them in.
Once inside the house, Luo Shu went to the kitchen to brew a pot of tea, pouring a cup for each of them, and then brought out some cake and pastries, setting them on the coffee table in front of them.
"I’ve always heard how beautifully your home is decorated, and seeing it today, it really is." Li Yuan looked around in amazement. It was the first time she had seen such a style of decoration.
"The decor is really exquisite. You must have put a lot of thought into it, right?" Qi Hui asked enviously. What woman doesn’t want her home to be as beautiful as a palace and to live like a queen within it?
"I’d seen a similar style before and had someone decorate it in that style," Luo Shu said as she sat down across from the two women, picking up the teapot to pour herself a cup of tea.
Qi Hui took a bite of a green bean cake, "Did you make these pastries yourself?" Seeing Luo Shu nod, she praised, "They’re delicious!"
"I made a lot, so later on, sisters-in-law, you can take some back for the kids," Luo Shu said with a smile.
"You really are capable, you can do anything," Wu Yuan said with a smile. The more she spent time with Luo Shu, the more she could see her excellence. No wonder she could snag a man like Lu Hanmo.
"Just messing around when I’m idle," Luo Shu replied, sipping her tea.
Hearing this, Qi Hui swallowed her bite of green bean cake and said with a sip of tea, "It’s good to be young. Not like us, not even having time to mess around. I heard you recently rented a house?" She and Wu Yuan actually came over today because of this. They were worried Luo Shu was too young and got fooled.
"Actually, I bought it," Luo Shu said. This was something they would find out sooner or later, so there was no point in hiding it.
"You bought that house?!" Qi Hui and Wu Yuan looked at Luo Shu in shock. How did she end up buying that house? They had been living in this military dependents’ village for seven or eight years and had heard about some things in the neighboring villages and towns, including the widely known story about the house Luo Shu had bought.
"The renovations have already started," Luo Shu said with a laugh, touching her nose. That house really had quite the reputation.
"But that house is unclean, how could you buy it?" Wu Yuan said regretfully. If she had known earlier, she definitely would have advised Luo Shu not to buy that house. Now that it was already bought, it was too late to dissuade her.
"Didn’t you move a bit too fast?" Qi Hui said somewhat speechlessly. They wanted to come over to persuade Luo Shu not to rent that house, but she had gone ahead and bought it, and even started renovations. What could she say now?
"Actually, that house isn’t as bad as people say. Once it’s fixed up, I’ll take you two to see it," Luo Shu said, smiling at them. She knew they meant well. If she were an ordinary person, she too would not dare to buy that house.
"You really didn’t see anything?" Qi Hui asked incredulously. When she first heard about it, she went there on purpose, and as soon as she arrived, she felt a chilling presence, even during the daytime. Imagine how terrifying it would be at night!
"When you visit, you’ll see, don’t worry! It will definitely be a surprise for you," Luo Shu assured as she noticed their tea cups were empty, so she picked up the teapot on the table to fill them up.
"Actually, I’ve been there once," Wu Yuan revealed. She always had been brave, so after hearing about it, she went there herself.
"You’ve been there too? I went once myself and I didn’t believe the stories until I saw for myself that the place really was quite eerie," Qi Hui said, surprised to learn Wu Yuan had been there.
"Exactly, I felt a chill down my spine the moment I got there," Wu Yuan recalled, shivering at the memory.
