Chapter 556: Five hundred and fifty-four, transfer

Back at the family compound, Zhang Xiaoling still felt it wasn’t worth it. But since Luo Shu had already made up her mind, there was no point in saying more.

"You’re back!"

"Sister-in-law Yang, did you find a house?"

"Why do you look a bit unhappy?"

Seeing Zhang Xiaoling return, the guard’s wives greeted her. Now Zhang Xiaoling was their breadwinner, so naturally, they had to please her.

"We found a house, but it will be a while before we can move in," Zhang Xiaoling said. She certainly wasn’t going to tell them about Luo Shu buying a house; otherwise, they would say Luo Shu was a spendthrift again.

"Where is it? Is it far from here? If it’s too far, it won’t be convenient." Earning money is important, but so are the men and children at home.

"It’s right in Lian Town," Zhang Xiaoling said. Although she hadn’t gone inside, the layout of the courtyard suggested it wouldn’t be small.

"That’s not too far. Which house is it? I often go there; maybe I know it," Du Cuihua said. She had been delivering goods to Lian Town these past days and had become familiar with the shop owners through repeated visits.

Zhang Xiaoling thought for a moment and said, "It’s the first house inside Guantong Lane, at the corner of the street." After all, they would all find out eventually.

"What?!" Du Cuihua screamed, dropping the cake she was packaging.

Everyone looked at Du Cuihua in surprise, "Sister-in-law Jiang, what’s wrong with you?"

After calming herself, Du Cuihua lowered her voice and said, "That house is unclean, someone died there." She was scared to death when she had heard about it. Luckily, there weren’t any shops at the street corner.

"What?!" Everyone also showed a horrified expression.

"Sister-in-law Yang, how could you think of renting that place? It’s such a terrifying place; I dare not go there."

"Yeah, it feels so gloomy just sitting there."

"Just thinking about it scares me!"

Zhang Xiaoling sighed helplessly in her heart. "I’ve been inside, and other than being a bit rundown, there’s nothing." If these guard’s wives were too scared to go, she would have to hire other people. Anyway, having the machines would make things faster.

"I’ve heard that at night there are sounds of ghosts crying from there; it’s so scary!" Du Cuihua shivered. She wouldn’t dare go, anyway.

"What exactly happened in that house?" Huang Li asked Du Cuihua. She loved to hear stories about ghosts and spirits.

Picking up the cake again to package it, Du Cuihua saw everyone looking at her curiously and smiled as she said, "They say that the house was originally inhabited by the wealthy Earth family. One night, a group of people in black rushed into the house and killed more than twenty members of the family. Only a little girl miraculously survived. Since then, that house has been haunted all year round, and even passing by during the day feels gloomy."

"That’s so terrifying!"

"My goodness! That scared me to death! I’m definitely not going!"

"Neither am I."

Zhang Xiaoling let out a long sigh. She too had been scared into a cold sweat while listening. But she was also a bit perplexed; she hadn’t felt that creepy atmosphere when she went inside. Was it because it was daytime?

Luo Shu returned home and started cooking, waiting for Lu Hanmo to get back.

Just as she finished cooking, she heard the sound of the door opening.

Turning her head around, she smiled at Lu Hanmo, "You’re back!"

Lu Hanmo walked up to her and kissed Luo Shu’s forehead, smiling, "I heard you went out today and rented a haunted house?" Neighborhood gossip always travels fast.

"Not rented, bought. I’ve already negotiated the price with the other party, and I’ll go to the Public Security Office to transfer the property first thing tomorrow morning. The news does travel fast!" Luo Shu said with a laugh.

"The whole residential compound knows about it," Lu Hanmo said indulgently, lightly flicking Luo Shu’s pert nose.

"I think it’s a nice place. Once the transfer is done tomorrow, I’ll take you to see it in the evening. I guarantee you’ll like it." She planned to tidy the place up tomorrow night so that workers could start the next day.

"Whatever you like, I’ll like," Lu Hanmo said with a smile.

Luo Shu glared playfully at Lu Hanmo, "Such sweet talk. Have you been drinking honey?"

When Luo Shu arrived at the Public Security Office, she saw that Aunt He was already waiting for her.

"You’re here!" Aunt He greeted Luo Shu with a smile as soon as she saw her coming. She had been there since 8:30 this morning, worrying that Luo Shu might change her mind. Now that Luo Shu had arrived, she could finally relax.

"Aunt He, let’s go inside!" Luo Shu said with a smile.

"Of course!" Aunt He nodded happily.

They walked into the Public Security Office and were greeted by a middle-aged officer.

The middle-aged officer glanced at them and asked, "Are you here to file a report?" The town wasn’t densely populated, and even if people came to report something, it was mostly minor issues such as quarrels, fights, or theft. He had been an officer for twenty years, and except for that one incident, the town had always been peaceful. Plus, with the training camp nearby, nothing too serious could happen.

"Officer Liu, we’re here to transfer a property," Aunt He said with a smile. There were only a few officers in the town, and she knew all of them.

"You’re selling your house?" Officer Liu asked, looking at Aunt He with surprise.

Aunt He’s family was well-off in the town and afforded to run a business. It was said that Aunt He’s family was related to the family where the incident occurred, and she had benefited a lot from that connection. The only girl who narrowly survived even left the house deed to her. Although nobody would buy that house, it was still a property, after all.

Aunt He smiled and nodded, "This sister-in-law wants to buy the house in Guantong Lane."

"What?!" Officer Liu was so surprised that his eyes widened, and he looked at Luo Shu before saying to Aunt He, "Aunt He, could you step outside with me for a moment? I have something to ask you."

"Okay!" Aunt He agreed and followed Officer Liu out of the office.

Once they were far enough from the office, Officer Liu stopped and turned to Aunt He, "Aunt He, this isn’t right of you. How can you cheat someone like this? You know the condition of that house. How can you sell it to her?"

Aunt He slapped her thigh with a look of grievance, "Oh! Officer Liu, you’re wronging me. How could I be that kind of person? I told her everything upfront, but she insisted on buying. What could I do?"

"Really?" Officer Liu looked at Aunt He skeptically. Everyone knew the situation with the house—whom would buy it?

"Don’t believe me? Ask her yourself," Aunt He pointed towards the office, anticipating that someone would think this way.
