Chapter 554: Five hundred fifty-two, house viewing

Luo Shu brought Zhang Xiaoling to the parking lot and walked up to a black Santana, "Let’s get in the car." Cars now are not like the ones in the future; they not only have fewer styles but even the colors are very limited. If not black or white, then they are army green or blue.

"Sure!" Zhang Xiaoling stepped forward, touched the sedan’s body, and looked envious. She had given up on the idea of a car, thinking even a bicycle would be great.

She pulled the car door, it didn’t open, pulled again, still not opening, Zhang Xiaoling looked embarrassingly at Luo Shu, who was already seated in the car, "I can’t open the car door."

Luo Shu leaned over, reached out, and helped Zhang Xiaoling open the car door.

Zhang Xiaoling got in the car, smiled awkwardly at Luo Shu, pulled the door shut forcefully, and said, "This is my first time in a car."

"After a few more rides, you’ll get used to it," Luo Shu said with a smile, then started the car.

Zhang Xiaoling nodded with a smile, "It feels completely different from riding a train. Luo Shu, how did you learn to drive? Did you drive here this time too? The road from Jinchen to here is not close at all. Aren’t you tired?" She felt a bit guilty inside. Luo Shu had just come back, and she barely let her catch her breath before dragging her out again.

"Hanmo taught me, I drove here alone, stopping along the way; it was actually okay," Luo Shu said with a laugh. That was the only way she could explain it.

"Instructor Lu is really good to you!" Zhang Xiaoling said enviously. She had never seen a man more caring to his wife than Instructor Lu.

"Isn’t Yang Le also very nice to you?" Luo Shu replied with a laugh.

Zhang Xiaoling nodded with a smile, "I turned our home into a mess this time, and he didn’t say a word about it. In fact, I’m already very content."

Lately, for the business, she hadn’t had time to make a single meal for Yang Le, and even her own meals were brought back from the canteen by Yang Le. Thinking about it, she truly felt guilty.

As the two chatted, they arrived at a small mountain village. It wasn’t too far from the training camp, just over ten miles away. If they could find a house here, it would be convenient for the Guard’s Wives to come and go.

Parking the car at the entrance of the village, Luo Shu led Zhang Xiaoling toward the village office.

Zhang Xiaoling didn’t understand these things. She just followed whatever Luo Shu wanted to do.

Entering the village office, they saw a somewhat dilapidated courtyard and a few old tile-roofed houses.

"Who are you looking for?" the gatekeeper, Big Uncle, poked his head out and asked.

"Hello! We’re looking for the village chief," Luo Shu replied with a smile.

"The village chief went to a meeting in the town and won’t be back at work until tomorrow," Big Uncle said.

"Thank you! Then we’ll come again tomorrow," Luo Shu said, and left the village office with Zhang Xiaoling.

"Luo Shu, are we going to look somewhere else now?" Zhang Xiaoling asked.

"Hmm," Luo Shu nodded. She was planning to check out a nearby town, but they definitely couldn’t pick a road that was too far away.

The two arrived at a small town. Although the weather in the Northwest wasn’t hot, there were hardly any people scattered about the streets.

"A few of the shops here have stocked our cakes," Zhang Xiaoling said somewhat proudly. The Guard’s Wives carried the load and delivered cakes here every day; for the closer journeys she’d charge one piece, and for the farther ones she’d charge one and a half.

"Let’s ask around in a shop," Luo Shu suggested, glancing around and walking towards a small shop.

The shopkeeper was a middle-aged woman, lying on a bamboo bed, eyes closed, feigning sleep. Hearing footsteps, she opened her eyes and looked at Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling, "It’s Xiao Ling! What brings you here today?" Zhang Xiaoling had come to sell cakes before, so they knew each other.

"Aunt He! I wanted to ask if there are any larger houses for rent nearby?" Zhang Xiaoling asked. She had already inquired about renting a house with other shopkeepers, who all said they didn’t know. Moreover, as she was quite busy, she hadn’t come back to ask again.

"You’re looking for a house to rent?" Aunt He stood up and looked at Zhang Xiaoling with a smile.

"Our cake-making place is too small now, we want to find a bigger place," Zhang Xiaoling said.

Aunt He nodded with a smile, "I know of a place that’s available to rent, but the rent is a bit high, would you like to go see it?"

"Yes, please! Thank you, Aunt He," Zhang Xiaoling said excitedly. As long as it was suitable, she would rent it. As for the rent, it shouldn’t be too expensive in the Northwest.

Aunt He went out and called a young girl over to watch the shop, then took Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling to the house for rent.

"The house is at the end of the street; it hasn’t been lived in for many years and has become a bit dilapidated," Aunt He said with a laugh as they walked.

"Did the family that lived there move away?" Zhang Xiaoling asked curiously.

"You’ll know once you get there," Aunt He said, a flicker of panic in her eyes. She was related to that family, so when they moved out, they left the keys with her.

But in these days, nearly everyone was just about sewing their pockets to their pockets; who would rent a house?

Leading Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling to the end of the street, Aunt He turned into an alley and stopped in front of a house.

"This is it!" Aunt He pointed at the house in front of them.

Luo Shu and Zhang Xiaoling looked up. Although they hadn’t seen the inside of the house yet, they could already see some of the yard from the outside. There was a tall parasol tree, and under the tree, the roof tiles curved with the eaves on all four corners sticking up, indicating it was an old-fashioned building.

Aunt He, frightened, glanced at the house and swallowed before asking, "Would you like to go in and take a look?" Even for the sake of the rent, she wouldn’t go inside.

Zhang Xiaoling looked at Luo Shu, somewhat surprised. There was definitely something odd about this house, but now wasn’t the time to ask; since they were here, they naturally wanted to look inside.

"Okay!" Zhang Xiaoling replied.

Aunt He took out a bunch of keys, removed two from her key ring, and handed them to Zhang Xiaoling, "You go open the door yourself; I need to get back to the shop. If you decide you want to rent it, come tell me at the shop. If you don’t want it, just bring the keys back to my shop later." After saying that, she hurried off. She thought that after so much time had passed, she’d no longer be afraid, but once she got there, her heart started pounding uncontrollably.

"What on earth is in this house? Is there a need to be so scared?" Zhang Xiaoling muttered as she looked away from the house. For some reason, a feeling of unease started to rise within her.
