Chapter 513: Five hundred eleven, Background
Hearing Luo Shu’s dismissal, everyone felt a bit displeased.
"Fine! I’ll come over to visit again tomorrow," someone said.
"I’ll head back first, I’ll come over to see after the furniture is delivered."
Everyone was curious about those items Luo Shu had spent over three thousand on.
They were famously poor here, and the fact that Luo Shu could throw around money in such an impoverished place made them curious, envious, but more so, jealous. Luo Shu lived in the same family courtyard; why should she be able to spend extravagantly, buying whatever she wanted, while they had to pinch pennies and scrape by?
Once everyone had left, Zhang Xiaoling looked at Luo Shu with grievance, "How can they say such things? It’s just too much!" She admitted that she had benefited from Luo Shu’s actions, but she had paid money too. Now being talked about like that really made her feel bad.
"Don’t be upset," Luo Shu sighed and patted Zhang Xiaoling’s shoulder. The world of women can sometimes be really scary!
Zhang Xiaoling nodded, sniffed, and said, "I’m not upset. The more they talk like that, the closer I’ll be to you, just to make them jealous."
Luo Shu smiled and shook her head, "That’s the spirit!" The current Zhang Xiaoling really did seem like a child acting out of spite.
Zhang Xiaoling smiled and nodded, then checked the time on her wrist, "Instructor Lu should be coming back soon, so I’m heading back first." She still felt somewhat uneasy about Lu Hanmo.
When Li Hongmei returned home and saw her own dilapidated house, then thought of Luo Shu’s elegantly renovated place, she suddenly lost all interest, not even having the energy to cook. Her man was a Deputy Squadron Leader, after all, while Luo Shu’s man was merely an instructor, yet their lifestyles were worlds apart. The more she thought about it, the less satisfied she felt.
Jiang Lijun walked in the door to find his wife with a worried look, sitting on the sofa without dinner made, which immediately aroused his curiosity, "Are you not feeling well?"
"I feel unwell in my heart," Li Hongmei said, gesturing to her chest as she looked at Jiang Lijun.
Jiang Lijun sat down next to Li Hongmei and asked with concern, "Do you want to go to the infirmary to get it checked out?"
"Lijun, do you know? That new Instructor Lu’s wife spent over three thousand the day before yesterday, and today, she refurbished her house like it’s a bridal chamber," Li Hongmei said, feeling even more upset.
"I’ve heard about it," Jiang Lijun said. But it didn’t have much to do with him; living their own lives well was what mattered.
"That new Instructor Lu is just an instructor, where did he get so much money?" Li Hongmei asked. This was something she really couldn’t figure out. They’d only been there for three days and had already spent so much on furniture and renovations. Thankfully, they hadn’t bought home appliances, or she would be even more jealous.
"Instructor Lu is no ordinary person; he was transferred from Jinchen. Not only is he highly capable, but it’s said that his family has a powerful background," Jiang Lijun declared with admiration. Lu Hanmo might not be a Guard Member, but he was the idol all the Guard Members admired. He was well-known for his exploits: defeating MD country, resolving Y country’s bat crisis, and succeeding in every mission he’d taken part in, big or small.
"Then why is he just an instructor?" Li Hongmei asked curiously.
"That’s because he didn’t want more; otherwise, with his merits, he would at least be a Squadron Leader by now," Jiang Lijun explained.
"Oh," Li Hongmei nodded, and her jealousy towards Luo Shu grew. How come she couldn’t find a man as outstanding as Lu Hanmo?
Zhao Dahai came home to find Li Xiangyun with a stern face, silently watching TV, "Who’s upset you now?"
"Who else but the woman next door," Li Xiangyun said angrily. She had wanted to take a nap today, but the constant hammering and drilling next door meant she couldn’t get a wink of sleep.
"Haven’t I reminded you not to provoke her?" Zhao Dahai said gravely. It wasn’t easy for him to climb to his current position, and he didn’t want household matters to force him into early retirement.
"I haven’t provoked her; it’s she who’s provoked me. It’s been non-stop from morning to night, banging and drilling, making it impossible for me to take a nap," Li Xiangyun declared through gritted teeth. Living next to them, she really had the worst luck!
"People have to tidy up when they’ve just moved in, can’t you just stop being so petty," Zhao Dahai glared at Li Xiangyun and walked towards the bathroom.
"Zhao Dahai, don’t you walk away from me! Where am I being petty? Can’t I vent and complain a bit?" Li Xiangyun stepped forward, glaring at Zhao Dahai in challenge. He must be enchanted by that woman next door; in the past, he would have consoled her first whenever such things happened.
"Why are you becoming more and more unreasonable?" Zhao Dahai frowned. Indeed, a woman shouldn’t be indulged; it leads to forgetting who’s head of the household.
"Zhao Dahai, for goodness’ sake be honest, when have I ever been unreasonable? You’re the one who asked, and I simply answered. I’ve already promised you I wouldn’t provoke her, can’t I even complain a bit? Tell me, are you bewitched by that ’Fox Spirit’ next door?" In the past, he had never treated her this way, but everything changed after the neighbors moved in.
"Shut up! Do you want to get me killed?" Zhao Dahai roared with anger. Her words might have been a spur-of-the-moment outburst, but if overheard by the wrong ears, would he still have a place in the training camp? Who was Lu Hanmo? He was the idol in the hearts of countless Guard Members, the pillar of their morale. If he coveted Lu Hanmo’s wife, wouldn’t that be courting death?
Li Xiangyun was stunned by Zhao Dahai’s shout, but as she regained her senses, her anger surged, "If you don’t like her, why react so fiercely?"
"Slap!" A slap echoed through the room.
Li Xiangyun, disbelieving, covered her face and looked at Zhao Dahai, "You hit me?!" They had been married for nearly ten years, and he had always been dutifully compliant with her. Not to mention hitting her, he had never even said a harsh word to her. But today, he had actually hit her, and she couldn’t swallow that insult.
