Chapter 459: Four hundred and fifty-eight, Harvest

Xiayou Valley was vast, and it took Luo Shu and Xia Mu over an hour of walking inside the valley before they finally saw a mountain ridge.

"The herbs the village chief needed were gathered in that mountain ridge," Xia Mu said.

"Hmm!" Luo Shu nodded with a smile and pulled Xia Mu toward the mountain ridge.

As soon as they entered the ridge, they encountered a few villagers from Xiaxia Village.

Seeing Xia Mu bring Luo Shu in, the villagers greeted them warmly.

"Xia Mu has come too? Is she the girl you picked up by the creek? She sure is pretty!"

"You’ve come here to gather herbs too, right? Be sure to be careful, it’s quite dangerous here."

"Xia Mu, both you and the girl shouldn’t venture too deep into the ridge; there are many wild animals inside."

"Thank you, uncles and aunts, we’ll definitely pay attention," Xia Mu thanked everyone.

After parting from the villagers, Luo Shu and Xia Mu continued walking ahead.

Along the way, they did pick a lot of herbs, though they were all common ones. Other than being able to cure illnesses, they weren’t very valuable.

Luo Shu thought for a moment and then said to Xia Mu, "Xia Mu, sit here and wait for me for a bit. I’ll go ahead to check it out and will be right back."

"Sister, it’s dangerous further on; you shouldn’t go there," Xia Mu advised. Although she rarely came to Xiayou Valley, she knew this was as far as they could safely go; any further would be dangerous. This was the experience accumulated by generations of Xiaxia villagers.

"Don’t worry, I can protect myself." Luo Shu moved some rocks over and arranged a formation around Xia Mu. Even though she lacked spiritual power at the moment, she could still set up formations. In the world, everything could be a formation flag; as long as she had objects around her, it would work.

"Sister, what are you doing?" Xia Mu asked, full of amazement, as she watched Luo Shu move the stones.

"I’m setting up a formation. With this, even if a wild animal passes by, it won’t attack you," Luo Shu said, dusting off her hands.

"That’s amazing!" Xia Mu said incredulously.

"Stay inside, I will be back very soon," Luo Shu said and then walked ahead.

Xia Mu was about to call out to Luo Shu to stop her when suddenly the scene before her changed, and everything around her disappeared instantly, except for herself.

"Oh my! This is incredible! Sister couldn’t be an immortal, could she?" Xia Mu looked around in disbelief, trying to confirm whether this was just an illusion.

Luo Shu walked deeper into the ridge and discovered that the herbs here indeed had higher value. Although she hadn’t seen any Spirit Grass, selling these herbs for some money wouldn’t be a problem.

After placing the herbs into the basket on her back, Luo Shu continued to advance, gathering more herbs along the way. Unbeknownst to her, she had already reached deep into the mountains.

Due to the rarity of visitors in the deep mountains, the vegetation here was dense, with a thick layer of fallen leaves covering the ground. Stepping on them, a continuous "squeak, squeak" sound emitted beneath her feet.

Seeing a Level One Continuation Grass up ahead, Luo Shu’s eyes lit up as she hurried over, "There’s even Spirit Grass here!" In the past, she wouldn’t have spared a Level One Spiritual Grass a second glance, but things were different now. She needed the Spirit Grass to exchange for money, to buy the herbs she needed. Only by restoring her cultivation could she go and find Hanmo.

After putting the Continuation Grass into the basket, Luo Shu looked up at the sun in the sky and, seeing that there was still plenty of time, decided to look for a little while longer.

The Spirit Grass she found grew increasingly numerous, though their levels weren’t very high, all being Level One or Two. But for Luo Shu at the moment, this was already very good.

A rustling sound came from behind her. Luo Shu dodged alertly, and a huge black bear brushed past her swiftly.

The black bear, enraged at missing its attack, let out a loud roar and charged at Luo Shu again.

Luo Shu’s eyes narrowed slightly as she reached into the basket on her back and pulled out a sickle. As the black bear lunged, she swung her sickle with a fierce arc, quickly meeting its charge and aiming for the bear’s neck. Though she lacked cultivation now, she was still much stronger than the average person.

Blood sprayed from the black bear’s neck, and it bellowed in pain, its eyes revealing a violent light as it crazily charged at Luo Shu.

Luo Shu deftly dodged to the side, while her sickle dealt the black bear another blow.

"Ao!" The black bear screamed in agony, charging a few more steps before collapsing unwillingly to the ground.

Luo Shu took a few weary breaths and looked at the bear on the ground, feeling relieved that it was just a common wild beast. If it had been a Spirit Beast, she wouldn’t have had such an easy time today. This bear was good stuff, though; she could take it back to eat, and sell the rest at the market.

She took a roll of hemp rope out of the basket and tied it around the dead black bear. Then, dragging the bear, Luo Shu headed back the way she had come. The harvest this time was quite good; she should be able to hold out for a while.

Xia Mu grew increasingly anxious as Luo Shu didn’t return. However, she was completely unable to leave the Formation herself, so all she could do was worry. And even if she could leave, Xiayou Valley was so vast she wouldn’t know where to begin searching for Luo Shu.

As the sky gradually darkened, Xia Mu paced in place frantically. "Where could sister have gone? What if something happened to her? What should I do?"

Just then, the scenery in front of her flickered and returned to the mountainous landscape from before.

Xia Mu looked around, but still couldn’t see Luo Shu. "Strange! Why did the Formation open by itself? Should I go look for my sister, or wait here?" She started to feel torn.

After much consideration, she decided to wait there for Luo Shu to come back.

Dragging the black bear, Luo Shu saw a petite figure in the distance, sitting where they had parted, with a faint smile on her face. That silly girl was still waiting for her so late; what if she never returned? Luo Shu had set a timer when establishing the Formation earlier because she was afraid something might happen to her. If she didn’t return, Xia Mu would be trapped in the Formation forever, which would be harming rather than protecting her.

"Sister! You’re back!" Seeing Luo Shu return, Xia Mu quickly got up from the ground and ran joyfully towards her. She was so relieved her sister was fine. In fact, as she waited here, her fear only grew—the fear that she might wait until the next morning, or even longer, or perhaps that she might never see her sister again.
