Chapter 257: 256, The First Heartbeat

Xu Liping watched unblinkingly as Lu Hanmo jumped down from the upper bunk.

His valiant posture, his resolute and chiseled handsome features, as well as the serious and intensely ascetic Guard uniform he wore, all tightly gripped her attention, causing her heart to beat violently. He was different from any man she had met before; he was the first man to ever make her heart race.

Seeing Lu Hanmo greet Luo Shu, Xu Liping frowned with displeasure. Her sister was right; she indeed was a fox spirit who knew how to seduce men.

"Hello, I don’t know where the hot water room is, I’ll go with you," Xu Liping said. With her looks, she didn’t believe he could resist her after a few more days together.

Lu Hanmo did not respond to Xu Liping and started walking outside.

Xu Liping hurriedly followed, "Wait for me!"

Luo Shu shook her head with a smile and picked up a magazine to read. She wasn’t worried about the unexpected romantic advances; if she didn’t even have that much trust in Lu Hanmo, there was no need for them to be together.

Xu Lisha withdrew her gaze and glanced at Luo Shu on the upper bunk before sitting down on her bed. The trip back home with Wang Zhiyong had been exhausting. What depressed her most was the poverty in Wang Zhiyong’s family, which was beyond her imagination.

Two large thatched huts, seven or eight people crammed together. Eating salty vegetables and watery porridge every day, she went to bed hungry nightly. That was bearable, but the fact that his family expected her to work, despite being pregnant, was not.

If it wasn’t for the fact that she and her sister, both girls, did not dare to travel back alone, she would have left on her first day at Wang Zhiyong’s home. Had she known the conditions at Wang Zhiyong’s place, she never would have married him. But now, it was too late for regrets; she was already pregnant with his child and couldn’t possibly divorce him now.

Xu Liping followed Lu Hanmo all the way to the hot water room.

Lu Hanmo filled his water bottle, thoroughly washed his cup, and did not cast a single glance at Xu Liping. In his eyes, aside from Shushu, any other woman was as indifferent to him as a passerby on the street.

Seeing that Lu Hanmo was ignoring her, Xu Liping was not discouraged, "My name is Xu Liping, what’s your name?"

Lu Hanmo finished washing his cup and walked out with the hot water bottle.

Xu Liping stamped her foot and hurriedly followed. She was determined to make him open up to her.

Lu Hanmo returned to his room, reached up to the upper bunk to grab his bag, took out a packet of tea leaves, brewed a cup of tea, gently blew on it to cool it down, and offered it to Luo Shu who was reading a magazine, "Shushu, have some tea."

"Hmm!" Luo Shu put down the magazine, smiling as she took the tea from Lu Hanmo, drank a few sips, then handed the cup back to him.

Lu Hanmo took the cup and drank directly from it, without any trace of aversion.

Watching the two exchange such natural and mundane actions, Xu Liping bit her lip in resentment and glared fiercely at Luo Shu. She was resolved to win him over; he was the first man to quicken her heartbeat, and she would not give up easily.

Lu Hanmo turned over to climb onto his bed, taking out a Guard magazine from his bag to read.

Since there were others in the room, Luo Shu and Lu Hanmo didn’t talk much, but their eyes often met, exchanging knowing smiles as they each read their books.

Xu Liping sat down on her bed and noticed the two boiled eggs she had placed aside, her eyes instantly lit up.

Picking up the boiled egg, she stood up and extended it to her bunkmate Lu Hanmo, "This boiled egg is for you."

"No need!" Lu Hanmo’s gaze didn’t shift from the book in his hands as he responded indifferently.

"Don’t be polite with me, just take it." Xu Liping smiled, looking at Lu Hanmo without any intention of taking it back.

Lu Hanmo frowned slightly and, seeing the sly smile in Luo Shu’s eyes, a hint of helplessness flashed through his own.

"My wife would get angry if I ate it, right, wife?" Lu Hanmo asked, turning to Luo Shu opposite him.

"You... you’re already married?" Xu Liping looked incredulously from Luo Shu to Lu Hanmo, "She’s so young, how could you possibly be married? I don’t believe it!" Was this the outcome of her first fluttering heart?

"Liping, come here." Xu Lisha couldn’t stand it anymore.

Xu Liping sniffed, holding back her tears, and walked over to Xu Lisha with a sad face, "Sister, I feel so sad." She thought she had found her destined Prince Charming, only to find he belonged to someone else.

Xu Lisha gently patted Xu Liping’s back, consoling her, "There, there, you’re so beautiful. Are you afraid nobody else will like you? There, don’t be sad."

Luo Shu smiled and glared at Lu Hanmo. See, you made her sad.

Lu Hanmo’s lips curled into a smile. Apart from you, it doesn’t matter to me what others think.

Sweet nothings! Luo Shu glared at Lu Hanmo coquettishly and picked up a book from beside her to read.

Lu Hanmo smiled and returned his gaze to his own book, picking it up to read as well.

Throughout the campus, the air was filled with the essence of youth.

Luo Qianyu pushed up his new gold-rimmed glasses and, clutching his textbooks, walked towards the classroom. He had researched the girl he liked, and she was a student at this school. To get closer to her, he had specifically become a teacher at this school.

Entering the classroom, he saw a handful of students scattered around. Since class hadn’t started yet, most students were grouped in threes and fives, chatting and laughing, while a few played and frolicked in the room.

Luo Qianyu’s eyes immediately found the girl sitting by the window, with one hand propping her chin, quietly looking out at the scenery. Her features were delicate, her demeanor pristine, like a blossoming lotus rising from the water—pure, and so beautiful it made one’s heart flutter.

When a stranger walked in, everyone was taken aback. Once they saw Luo Qianyu’s face clearly, the girls couldn’t help but blush, their hearts racing like startled deer.

"Who is he? How can he be so good-looking?"

"I’ve never seen a man more handsome than him. What is he doing in our class?"

"I really want to talk to him." The girls shyly stole glances at Luo Qianyu, whispering among themselves.
